1. What is the best compression tool for trying to minimize 300gb of video?

2. To create my own icon for my "ipod" external hdd do I just use this script in a autorun.inf file:

[autorun]
icon = .\salty1.ico

Then add the pic of salty1.ico in the same location?

3. Would it be possible to set a usb external hdd as a boot option within the bios?

2 and 3 are all YES! (3 depending on Mobo Age but most modern mobos should allow this)

Tell us a little more, is it purely storage or is it for transfer to something like an ipod.

It is for transferring on to my external whilst I reinstall my windows. So storage an no need for immediate playback. I would use rar but crous if there is a much better alternative as I have around 700gb of videos but only 300gb that is imperative as the rest is either dvds I own or dvds my close friends own....

I'm going to suggest maybe doing an image with something like acronis, it has different compression ratio's etc.

Alternatively iirc 7zip has the best compression or you could just convert the files into a better codec :D

I don't really feel like going through 150 videos and converting the codec. I shall use iirc :D

Umm, IIRC is an abbreviation for If I Recall Correctly. I really hope you were taking the micky.

If your video files are DivX or MPEG, they almost certainly won't compress any further with 7zip.

Cheers,
Stephen

AVI is just a container, what's the codec?

I am not sure I am not on that computer atm. They are dvd rips that have been compressed using autoguardian knot

My PSP was V1000 which was the first batch to come from Japan, its now running 3.72 M33_2 with custome XMB, Coldboot, GameBoot etc...

The PSP mainly is used for Podcasts but i do have about 8 games on the memory stick so i dont need to carry UMD's about with me all the time.

Another question can any jpeg be converted to an ico file or is a special program needed to convert the file correctly? sorry for the simplicity of my question but it is the first time I have tried.

an ICO needs to have specific parameters if i remember correctly.
has to be a specific size and specific colour bitrate.

You could use CoolUtils simple online converter (http://www.coolutils.com/Online-Image-Converter.php#) for converting smaller (<100kb) individual .jpeg - .ico files.

Their Total Image Converter (http://www.coolutils.com/TotalImageConverter) can convert larger size images, and also does batch conversions, but the full program will again cost you ($19.90 is only about a tenner though)...

All image formats:

Total Image Converter supports almost all image formats (see the list ->).
It's all-in-one solution for those who do not want to waste time and effort searching for 10 different converters to deal with different formats.

Batch conversion:

If you have hundreds of images to be converted, you can use its batch file convert option. Just check the files that you want to process or just press Select All button to save your time.
Get any amount of image files converted or resized in one click!
