Hi all,
Am about to make the move to Vista but thought it worthwhile to check if anyone has had any issues with some of the key bits of software that I regularly use on XP, in case it changes my mind and I stay "XP" for now...
1. MS Office 2003 Pro *OK!*
2. Steam *OK!*
3. UltraEdit *OK!*
4. VNC Viewer *OK!*
5. Putty *OK!*
6. Firefox *OK!*
7. MS Money 2000 *OK!*
8. Memory Map Navigator *NO*
9. DVD Shrink *OK!*
10. Pinnacle Studio *NO - need v11 or later*
11. Yam Yam translation software (ha ha Forthy ;] ) *POSSIBLY OK!*
12. Nero 6 *OK!*
I could VM some of them if need be onto a server, but having them native on the main box will be better.
Am I being over-cynical? Anyone using the above on Vista or, more importantly, have tried and found a problem?
1,2,5 & 6 will all work. I'd be surprised if 7 won't!
Cheers,
Stephen
RealVNC does as well, at least the version I have.

Super, thanks for the input guys... anyone check the rest of them?!
I could have a look into 3 and 9 when i get home (about 7ish) if no one else has by then.
EDIT: I can also do 12 now.

Added Nero 6 - am I going to need a newer version :( ?
I'm using the latest version of Nero, if that helps?
Cheers,
Stephen
Well UltraEdit and DVDShrink both installed and started fine, I shrunk a DVD without problem. However when installing Nero (6.6.1.4) it stated that there were known compatibility issues with it and advised an update from the Nero site. I installed it anyway and it successfully burned the DVD I shrank without the update.
Nero 7 works with vista. Nero 6 is Pre vista.
(ha ha Forthy ;] )
:D
*chuckles*
DVD shrink and nero (might be problems but works fine for me) both work over on my other pc which is on vista.
Have used DVD Shrink several times without problems, should be fine.

Right, all files backed up, I'm going across to the dark side of the moon. When/if I come out the other side, I should be riding the Vista wave :D

Well, blow me down, that was the quickest, slickest, simplest Microsoft OS install I've ever done in my life
Dont let Jacob hear you say that!
Can you install RAID drivers without a floppy now?

Can you install RAID drivers without a floppy now?
Damn right you can - CD/DVD support at last! Not that I needed to; recognised my Intel ICH array straight off...

You missed something :p
Can you install RAID drivers without a floppy now?
Aside from the fact that neither of the two installs I've done have needed extra drivers (it used built in ones for all 3 RAID controllers I've used), you can put them on a USB pen drive.
Cheers,
Stephen
Pleasing.
Now I just need some cash for a RAID array and a copy of Vista....
LMAO. :D

Don't you get a bonus for each 100 speeding motorists you nick? :D ;) :p
Actually, Vista is nowhere near as bad as I was expecting it to be. Once you get the hang of the control panel and finding all the stuff that's moved, it's pretty stable.

I loved installing Vista. It even installed off my SATA optical drive, which I was worrying it might not do :p
Good stuff.

Gawd darn it, DreamScene is sooooo cool. At last, Gadgets bring Samurize to the desktop properly. Lots of linux-like features- I can't believe I'm saying this, but MS have actually got me impressed for once! Startup performance of both the OS and applications is sometimes appears a smidgen slower than XP but overall the experience is definately a step in the right direction... and Bioshock performs no worse so, where it counts (in the games) it's no different to XP as far as I can tell.
Jacob is soooo going to hate you for saying that! Dare I say it, that he might be wrong about an OS that he's never used? :p
Cheers,
Stephen

Well, let's be honest about this, there's not a fat lot there that MS can claim was purely their own idea. Most of it is robbed from apps and ideas from elsewhere. Some of it is, I'm sure, rather Mac-like although I can't comment directly as I've never used one. There's certainly hints of funky X windows managers in there, and other 3rd party apps that people wrote for previous Windows incarnations (the excellent Serious Samurize, as mentioned above). The motion desktop background is something I've been dreaming about in XP for years now - finally it's here :)

He's one of us now :D

*cheer!*
Yeah, no doubt a lot of ideas originated from 3rd partys. if people find it useful then they should add it without having to download 3rd party apps imho. Nothing wrong with competition now lads!
Btw, the voice reorganisation in Vista is the Dogs Balls!

Just thought I'd return to this thread and offer an update...
I am going back to XP :)
Time moved on after the initial install.
DreamScene crashed, repeatedly. It got removed.
UAC continuously got in the way of a power-user who knew what he was doing. It got turned off.
IE was abominably slow. Firefox went back on.
Some games went on. They grinded (comparatively speaking). The box was upgraded. Not much improved. They got uninstalled; Dan moved to his 360 instead.
File copying become, for some reason, a long and laborious process. Indexing got turned off. Made no difference. Dan lumped it.
Some videos were played. They didn't work. Codecs were installed. They still didn't play. They worked fine before. I groaned.
I tried to find various settings and tweaks in control panel. They've all been hidden so much, and fluffy-fied, I'm lost.
I installed a Microsoft Webcam on a Microsoft operating system. I configured the Microsoft messenging application, but it does not work and I can never get audio. It worked fine before.
There is no longer any advantage or 'plus' this gives me over XP, and it just makes my work now harder. DX10 or not, it's coming off at a sensible opportunity and XP is going back on.
:(
I (stupidly) decided to upgrade from Vista 32-bit to 64-bit last week.
Since then the list of stuff that no longer works continues to grow, and I can see no real benefit in it at all.
The latest 64-bit casualty seems to be Battlefield 2142 which suffers from lock ups and sound issues.
I can see me going back to 32-bit before the end of the week.
