Rumour has it, something like 33% of Xbox 360s have failed, causing the RROD ( Red Ring of Death ) to display ( the console's equivalent to a permanent BSOD ).
The usual solution to this is to send it back to Microsoft, who will, in theory, send you a working replacement. Some people have had to go through the process several times ( 11 replacements was the most that I had heard of ) with one of my friends on to his 3rd.
The good news, however, is that Microsoft are doing the "Good Thing™" of admitting there is a problem with their returns system and rectifying it, retroactively refunding and covering all systems and costs! Expect Microsoft to gain a few new fans out of this ( just in time for them to be painted favourably in the press during E3. A cunning move to ensure the PS3 is all but forgotten about.)
