The potentially worrying trend of adverts being placed into gaming environments takes another leap forward with news that Quake Wars will include them as a way of subsidizing the server costs and new add-on packs. Thankfully, the developers have said that the adverts will be appropriate ( in both content and placement ), non-intrusive and non-interactive, with the developers maintaining approval rights.

I really don't have a problem with this. There was a big ruckus over EA putting ads in Battlefield 2142. The result? To begin with, it advertised things like Northern Strike. More recently they've started advertising nasty things like...Intel processors. Now if that's not the work of Satan, then I don't know what is...

That there is the important one IMO, given the recent hullabuloo in the news/media over some recent games!
Sony's PS3 title 'Resistance: Fall of Man' upsetting the church, 'Manhunt 2' being refused classification in the UK due to it's content/gameplay, and... more appropriately in the context of this thread... 'Law and Order: Double or Nothing' displaying footage of the murdered toddler James Bulger
If they look good, fine. But some of the ads in CS1.6 just look ridiculous.
That they will be 'apropriate' in both placing and context though, I do like. And the talk of subsidizing add-ons, I also most definately do like.
Having played the beta I can tell you it's not that bad at all.
On the map Sewer there are 2 small billboards on one largish Barracks which blend into the scenery and are hardly noticable.
I did throw a paddy when I heard about the ad's, but after reading that article and playing for myself, it really isn't an issue.
If you want me to show you a screenshot of the billboards, I can.
