I've inadavertedly let my Vista Activation period expire. SO turn on this morning, greeted with the options of running in limited mode, or turning it off. So I did the former. Firefox automatically opens up.
Managaed to get task manager running by typing c:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe.
Then did New task, explorer.exe. Which worked, functionality restored, or so I thought. I'm trying to get cmd.exe open so I can rearm.
However, when trying to run cmd I am greeted with the message
"Not Enough Quota is available to process this command!"
So google that. Answer is apparently to free up some memory. So closed firefox, and hurray, cmd opens. then type slmgr - rearm. And hey presto
"Not Enough Quota is available to process this command!"
I've run out of things to shut down. So back to google, said to increase the page file size, so, Start, Control Panel....
"Not Enough Quota is available to process this command!"
What can I do? I CANNOT lose this installation.
UPDATE: Managed to get control panel open after closing firefox down however none of this options are visible.
UPDATE2: Closed down explorer after I opened cmd, which allowed me to run slmgr - rearm. Thought I had sorted it but then recieved the message
"Error OX800706BA occured in connecting to server. Error description: The RPC server is unavailable."
Thoughts?
UPDATE3: Once I got to the point where only cmd was open, tried "net start rpcss" and was given the same "Not enough quota" message.
So...activate it? If you can't then I suggest buying Windows before installing it next time. If you have data you need, stick the drive in another machine and copy it off that way. Alternatively, use something like a Linux LiveCD to copy it on to a pen drive or whatever.
Surely you just enter your legit key during an activation process and hey presto.
It is legit isn't it..... ;)

Just get explorer open and copy your stuff to a external drive/network drive/CD's. Then re-install. If you actually bought a copy of Windows which I'm assuming you havent to be in this situation then you wouldn't be in this situation.

Of course the obvious answer is to activate it. And yes I know I can just get the data off by connecting it to another PC. I am not doing anything illegal by rearming it, I genuinely am just trying it out at the moment, and am still undecided, in the mean time however I would like the use of my computer. So is there any way I can eliminate this "Not enough Quota" problem.
How many times have you rearmed thus far?
it is different for vista 64 , I disarmed using this
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe
NOT C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe
Exacly how long do you need to "try out" Vista? Two, three months?!?
Assuming you can get this information what is there to stop anyone viewing these forums from using unregistered versions of Vista for as long as they want?
30 days is long enough for anyone to make up their mind about a new piece of software.
If you are still unsure about it after this time then I would suggest sticking with your previous OS and have another look after the release of a service pack or two.
Oh and welcome to the forums jlumley.

Not saying this is the case as it sounds to me like the op is trying to circumvent the activation but when I installed v64 for some reason the date didn't get set right, so when I had adjusted it to the right date, the trial period was over
Wasn't an issue because as soon as I'd opened the packaging for the disc I couldn't send it back anyways

Not enough quota is also returned when the Windows Message Queue becomes full. It would seem, if you are getting this returned consistently, that Microsoft may have built this in, to change the size of the message queue in limited mode, to deter people from doing exactly what your doing. Its unlikely, but it wouldnt surprise me.

Vista is designed to reduce the number of things it can run once it's outside the activation time period. It gives you just enough resources to activate the OS but not enough to use it normaly.
so you have 3 choices!
1) Live with it , untill it locks down so tight all you can do is run activation before logging in.
2) Activate it
3) go back to your old OS.
