Yes I do... remove the modem and drop it out the window. If you are high enough it should be pretty fast by the time it hits the ground. Then go and sign up for a broadband service.

use said 56k type line with a standard telephone, phone an ADSL provider, give them your credit card details and smile.

Assuming of course that ADSL is available in your area :D :D

God look at all theses smug braodband pirates....im not bitter...no im not bitter at all...  i just wish i could afford Broadband...

Still the best thing is to get a decent modem, have a nice clean line, and hope that your service provider is half decent.

3 main things to get the best D/L speeds from a 56k

1: Get a Hardware modem not a cheepo "WinModem"

2: Get a good ISP

3: Get a new dedicated Phone line for your modem

that's what i did! and i'm getting 53k to 49,k bps when i connect! ;) near Perfect speeds! ;)

Hardware modem first. You can find age old PCI hardware modems for next to nothing, and indeed a great many brand new ones cost less than software modems. But then you don't get the, uh, useful software features like... erm... yes.

I bought an external US Robotics via serial (when I found out I had a winmodem, adn realised it'd never work with my upcoming Linux installation), and my connection jupmed from an average 48 to 52. If you do use a serial modem, remember to disable flow control in windows cos this can cause a bottleneck.

If you can and your ISP supports it, get a v92 modem rather than a v90. This'll give you higher upload speeds, as well as less collision and lower latency when you're up and downloading alot of stuff at once.

All this is of course moot if you have a crap phone line. We had a great phone line, except for when it rained heavily, when the vandalised and never repaired box at the top of ths street got wet and the line went to ****, and we were lucky if we could connect at all.

Have as few adapters/connections between the phone line entry point and the modem as possible.

Also, a decent ISP helps. "Anytime" accounts are usually pants in this respect, and when BT Openwound kicked us off for being online 24/7 for 7 months (thanks to kppp's auto-fast-redial function :)), we could never raise anything faster than 43 with Freeserve. But at least they weren't AOL, eh?

One other thing; make sure you're not infested with spyware, and disable pop-ups (I often ever went to the lengths of turning off images altogether - or selecting "show cached images only" along with my 2 GB browser cache - when browsing the web, and just loading new images selectively if the text said they were interesting - saves you a shedload of bandwidth - and Opera is the browser you want for this). All these things are ultimately uneccesary, and getting rid of downloading unwanted stuff saved us about 20-30 MB a day.

It's just not worth the effort.... :(
If broadband is available in your area, get yourself a nice 1mbit line :D

ouija: what do we do if we CAN'T get ADSL in our area!!

Chris: go for a "Zoom" ( think they bought out lucent) modem they are about one of the best makes for price around! get their V92 External that's what i'm using!

I'm getting:
56,666 on virgin.net pay as you go
and
49,333 on Freeserve Anytime!

that's ok speeds for me! ;)

I'm runing mine with no extra settings or tweeks at the moment so it really depends on what ISP you choose and the line quality!

shop around and use all of those "1 month" free offers ISP are doing now till you get a good line speed!!

If you're stuck with 56K for whatever reason, I can guarantee you it IS worth the effort!

Also comes in very handy if and when your DSL goes down (especially if your ISP provides you with an emergency dialup number).

There is a way of improving your 56k but involves tweaking the registry. Oh I'm getting like 5/6k download rate which is pretty good :).

Taken from another forum:

For Windows95, 98, 98SE and Millenium Systems
(Win2K / XP below)

I Use www.Dumeter.com to measure upload/download speeds.
Install it first then compare the before and after speeds on the same, local servers.

PLEASE NOTE DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO MODEM SETTINGS WHILST MODEM IS IN USE, and Always back up the registry before making any alterations to it

1)Try connecting several times to your ISP, and make a note of any connection speeds you get.

Your Connection Speed is shown in the taskbar by the Lights if you leave your mouse over them for a few seconds

If you're lucky, you'll always get the same speed , but many people will get several.

If you have several, then you must change all of the connection values you get (see below)

2)Click on the Start button and select Run

3)Type REGEDIT, then click ok

4)HKEYLOCALMACHINE

5)SYSTEM

6)CURRENTCONTROLSET

7)SERVICES

8)CLASS

9)MODEM

10)0000 (Unless there are more listings here in which case select the higest numbered one)

11)RESPONSES

12)Now in the right hand pane, find the connection speed that you usually obtain.

13)Right Click this value and select MODIFY

14)Alter the 3rd and 4th values to 80 25 respectively (eg If see 02 00 EA c5 00 00 00 00 then change to 02 00 80 25 00 00 00 00)
When you make this alteration, the character at the far right will change to ----%----, if it doesn't then recheck the entry.

15)Repeat as required for all the connection speed you obtain (or for every single value if you are bored !

16)Close REGEDIT

17)Restart the computer.

18)Log back onto the internet

Win2K and Whistler / XP

1)START then select Run

2)REGEDIT

3)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

4)SOFTWARE

5)MICROSOFT

6)WINDOWS

7)CURRENTVERSION

8)UNIMODEM

9)DEVICESPECIFIC

10)* STANDARD560000 BPS V90 MODEM

11)RESPONSES

Now follow the steps from 12

* The actual entry will be specific to your modem (hayes=hayes rather than standard, etc ), but will be underneath the devicespecific key

If the above has been done correctly, windows will report that you have connected at 9600.(Don't worry you haven't, this is just a quirk of windows that I'll explain if you really want me to , but really isn't relevant).

18)Enjoy you increased download capacity.

PLEASE NOTE If your downloading from a server on the otherside of the world, along with 6000 other people, you won't get a fast download speed, but if the server is not full and is not too many hops away you will notice the differance.

I have read this thread with interest and have 2 points to make.

1. If you are at the end of 3 miles of twisted copper wire, an extra couple of extension cables and connectors won't make any difference unless they are faulty.

2. All dialup involves 2 modems, and the distant one will not be affected by any tweaks you make. You may be effectively fooling the distant end in to believing you are receiving packets you aren't, raising the possibilities of errors when you download.

The advice about the quality of line and ISP is the most relevant. BT only claim to guarantee data at 14.4kb which covers them for fax transmissions. It is sometimes difficult to get them to respond to problems where speech and noise levels seem fine. Persevere, and when they try the 'we don't guarantee data' bit, ask them where they make this clear on the marketing blurb for their own internet offerings. They soon back down.

Note that I am not suggesting anything said previously will not work, but at the end of the day a good ISP improves the chance that downloads will be fast and error free, thus making your effort worthwhile...
