View Full Version : Wireless network keeps cutting out?
Hi,
Im running Vista Home Premium 32bit, and i use a TP-Link PCI wireless card to connect to my router for the net, but my computer keeps cutting off from the network and its getting annoying now!
All my drivers are up to date so that shouldn't be the problem..
The only thing i can think of is my PSU, as its dodgey and i need a new one (im getting a new one ASAP, i.e when i get enough money!)
Anybody else having wireless troubles with Vista? or is it just me?
Any help? or should i just wait till i get a new PSU and see what happens?
Thanks,

How long have you had the wireless card? Have you used it under XP and if you have how did it perform then? How long have you had the problem and how far away is the computer form the wireless access point?
I'v had the card for a couple of months now, had it under XP before which was fine, but i did have a different PSU then and that was all gravy.
I think the problem has been since i installed Vista and the new ( i say new but it was a refurb and its causing my pc alot of problems ) PSU..
And my computer is 1 room away from my router, i connect to the router with an Apple iBook downstairs which is fine with no problems, so im sure its to do with my pc/ psu

Tell us why would you think your PSU be the problem
Well...
When i press the power button to turn my pc on, it starts up then shuts off 2-5 seconds later, then the power button doesnt work anymore, so you have to press reset, then hold the power button for around 5 seconds, then press reset again, and then finally the power button again....
And hopefully if im really lucky, the pc will turn on, usually it takes about half an hour of repeating the above to turn it on....
Then theres the random 100% freezes that happen quite often, forcing a case reset...
And im pretty sure its the PSU causing all the above, so im just guessing that the network problem must be something to do with it..
Also sometimes when it cuts me off from the network, when i go to disconnect then reconnect, it fails or even says there arent any networks available.
And just after my post above, my pc froze forcing a reset, and while typing this the network cut off and i got this message when i went to reconnect:

..And i only have 1 network, let alone wireless network

Wireless networks are inherently s***. The signal is quite bad, try temporarily moving your system and router closer together and see it it improves
As for the second network, it is probably just someone else using a netgear router nearby.

Yes and trees dont make noise when falling down if you cant see them, it rained blood at the weekend, the Titanic never sank and we all live on mars!
Just thought id add some more complete nonsense to the end of Jacobs post above.

Trees don't make a noise if no one is around. If you can prove they do I'll give you a peanut butter kit kat chunky.
Interestingly enough a recent discovery in quantum physics states that the world doesn't exist while no one observes it, so the tree isn't there at all.
But if this is true, the Schrodinger's Cat is indeed alive and dead at the same time.
Back on topic, when the wireless IS connected, what's the signal strength and/or quality like, and what connection speed does it achieve?
Well it said fair connection/ low connection mostly, quality was crap as it kept cutting out, and see sig for speed
I got fed up with it though, so i disabled it in Windows and went back to the old cable and now its perfect lol
Interesting theory about the world not existing though :D

Mine Does The Same! Disabling DHCP On The Router Resolved It For Me!

The speed shown in your sig is your internet connection speed, what we are after is your conection speed to your network. It will be anything from 1Mbps to 54Mbps ...

He does kinda have a point. Wireless networks are crap when not set up properly and using bad equipment.

Yup. Or when you are right across the house from the router with 83 million things to crap up the signal inbetween.

That doesn't justify this:
Wireless networks are inherently s***
It justifies your circumstances. There are many wireless networks that are huge enablers for a lot of people. At a home consumer level people just need to have realistic expectations, a modicome of common sense and a small understanding of what is happening around them.
Site sensibly, try and avoid some of the things that cause and worsen interference and be realistic - My top 3 tips for wireless networks!

I'm pretty sure this is a bug in Vista, i've seen it on several laptops and another wireless PC all running vista. Poor signal and continous dropping seem to be the symptoms. I've tried the usual update drivers, bios, etc to no avail. I'm hanging tight for a vista/driver update.

ive a netgear wg311t pci card ..ran xp no problem , even without using latest driver ..my signal was excellent as i bought an ariel from ebay ( picks up all my neighbours ,even across the road )
changed to vista and had nothing but problems .....
would install software no problem ... restart pc and vista would show txt that no software was installed even tho it would show on desktop or in add/remove programs ....after a few days of trying _gave up and went wired
just lookig at a asus p5k-e now
