Does anyone know where I can buy a student licence copy of winXP? All i can find is a few shops selling winME/win2k licence packs.

Have you tried PC World? The last time I was in there I spotted a lot of software with Student Licences. Can't remember if I saw Windows XP though.

Unfortunately micro$oft are only doing Office XP standard as a student licence now -- they have withdrawn everything else...
Office XP std student should cost you about £120.00
If you look on Ebay they regularly turn up.........like now

......I've just noticed............it's a dutch auction and he's got 25 of them up................you can't fail to get one at £82 or whatever it is.
sorry if someone has already suggested this, but too ****ed to read the whole thread.
I was recently browsing the computer services section of my uni website, and they sold cheap licences of windows to students thru the uni.
For example I can get a copy of XP for £37, this is however OEM, so you'll need to format your H/D and install fresh as if its a new PC, can't upgrade!!
You can also buy it OEM normally cheaper than the retail package, £97 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Operating_Systems_20.html)

Nickerz, you can use the OEM version of XP to upgrade from a previous version of Windows. Done it myself a few times.
Oh right, I was under the impression that the licence was only for distribution with new computers.
Remember that I tried to install the win2k that came with my previous system on my dads and it wouldn't have it, I had to format and install fresh!
But just to clarify from my post earlier contact your uni comptuer department, I would be very surprised if you can't get it thru them. Mine is the ****test uni around, so if they do it at mine they do it everywhere :-)

why arent you spending your grant on drink n fags like every other student ?
Funnily enough you do actually have to do some work sometimes, and computers do assist that somewhat ;-)

On the OEM products I have here it simply states 'To be supplied with new PC hardware', which in Microsoft's terms mean that the oem product can be supplied with any hardware that is capable of storage, i.e. hdd, fdd, cdr/rw,etc.
we see people flogging first/second hand OEM software all the time... if u look over at eBay most US sellers will send US software internationally, but to cover their tracks against MS policy blah blah, they usually give u a duff motherboard or a 100MB hard drive or some fossilised 386 CPU.
but there are dozens of stores down here in London selling OEM software.
having bought the entire range of MS software - 95,98, 98SE, ME, 2000 - i didn't bother with XP Pro - its just too expensive (tho 2000 was as well!)
just use a copy now... works fine, but i can't install the service pack...

I have just recieved a new DSP pack today of XP Home and they have changed the wording on the packages with SP1 included, to state 'For Distribution With A New PC Only', where as on the older ones, it states 'With New PC Hardware Only'.
Until I hear differently from MS's OEM department, a storage device counts as sufficient hardware to supply with OEM versions.

So what will Kustom ship an OEM copy of WinXP with?

I got the student upgrade version of XP pro from K**plett over the summer. I can't see it on their site anymore but it couldn't hurt to ask.
And on the issue of what hardware it has to be supplied with, I also ordered A DVD drive, and they sent it no questions asked:D :D

If there's anywhere that's gnna sell student licenses, it'll be your uni and nowhere else.
When I was at college I managed to pick up about £800 of antivirus software for £2. Bless my generous university for shelling out eight gazillion dollars to F-Secure to allow them to copy their discs and flog them to the students :D

Although I can't seem to find it right now MS did have a list of what you could buy an OEM license with. It's on there system builder site somewhere , just can't find where.

<bill>
What? 640K of RAM? No no no no nooo! I meant 640 gig of RAM. That should be enough for anybody! Well, until XP SE comes out...

Quite why anyone would want to buy Lindows I have no idea. As far as Linux goes, it sucks, and as far as Windows compatability goes, it also sucks.
If you want the stability and funkiness of Linux, whilst being able to run a great many Windows apps, then just get any distro and fork out $80 for a copy of the Codeweavers Crossover plugins.
I paid £56 for a student license upgrade version of XP Pro from Action.com.....
You need a previous OS though as its upgrade, though you still can do fresh installs onto a fresh new HDD (it just asks for your Win98SE cd during the installation as well as the XP one).
:)
I double checked my uni (south bank in LOndon) sells student winXP for £37, so if you know anyone studying there, get em to go to the computer centre for you....

and as long as you yourself are a student you can use it.
if not you are better off using a downloaded copy, at least that way you save the £37 to help replace your pc when the piracy police take it....

Piracy police???? What piracy police? :D
Practically all of the third world have downloaded versions of windows. If Mircosoft tried to enforce their licences, they would have a hell of a task.
Alot of people I know use downloaded versions of OS, and all manor of other software.

point is if you are going to use an illegal copy of software, why buy it from the uni

They never try to enforce their licenses until everyone is hooked.
