View Full Version : What is the best Media Player?

I've been using VLC (videoLAN) player for sometime, but I recently tried Mplayer and the sound was different, as in better.

I have experience with:
MusicMatch, WinAMP, Real, Itunes, VLAN, Mplayer, M$ MP, and probably others that haven't sprung to mind.

I don't quite understand why there is a difference in sound, but this could mean that all the players out there vary in sound quality - so which is the best? I don't care for the interface, I'm talking about the sound.

Are there any audiophiles or experienced music lovers in here that could maybe provide some guidance?

I'm a music person and always stuck with Media Player and iTunes. If the quality of the sound file is good then there is no problems.

I agree with Euphoria. WMP and itunes for me all the way.

I use either WMP or Winamp. As far as I'm concerned they're pretty much the same and as long as you've got a decent file (and a decent sound card and decent speakers and decent cables), you'll get decent sound. Unless you go crazy with the EQ settings...

WMP for music, VLC media player for videos.

If you use something like ffdshow and let it handle all of the codecs (including MP3 and WMA), you can fiddle to your heart's content on any media player (I use WMP).

I like VLC. Its a simple design and plays nearly everything you chuck at it.
VLC and iTunes for me.

iTunes seem to only support 44.1KHz sound even if you input files at 96KHz (~DVD quality soundtrack) - can you confirm this?

I use EAC and LAME encoder for MP3 ripping.

I'm going to test the new WMP...

Never use anything except Winamp or VLC player.

Absolutely. ITunes allows you to determine the quality and the file type that you want to import. Aiff / AAC / MP3 (although the other formats will offer higher quality when importing)

Also, if you use the Itunes music store, they will be upgrading the quality of their AAC files.

I've never had a problem with the quality of ITunes and love the interface.

Music - Winamp
Videos - WMP
Movies - VLC

I use WMP mainly for music (and WinAMP every now and again) and VLC for videos. VLC is great as, as said, you cand throw practically anything at it without much of a fuss.

As for sound quality, I find that on my laptop, WMP seems to give the best sound (with all the EQ, WOW and bass settings fine tuned) with my Creative Audigy 2NX USB sound card (one of the best on the market  )

Amarok (http://amarok.kde.org/) all the way :D

(I did hear there would be a Windows port at some point..)

Hey,

I know this is a bit off topic for this thread, but I was curious if there are any podcasts that you listen to that might deal with tech stuff like what is contained on this forum. What are your faves? Just looking for cool / geeky stuff so I can stay ahead of the tech eight ball.

Thanks ya'll

That would be a good candidate for a new thread, copy, paste, new thread (technology/gadgets sub-forum) and then remove the above.

You'll definitely get more answers that way, too :)

Edit it and leave a note saying you've started a new thread :)
