hi i was really keen on getting vista, it was going to be the back bone of my new system. but i was reading tomshardware on windows vista and it didnt rank to good with them, apparently its sluggish, and games dont work very well on it.
i don't want to go out and buy my new system with vista and not be able to experience my new system to its fullest.
what do you think?
Go with xp home for the moment and let all the bugs, and drivers mature for a while as vista is still very new.
As with anything new there will always be teething problems and some things may appear worse than they used to. With time though things will settle down and as with previous versions of windows Vista will become the 'norm'.
The retail versions are a bit pricey so it all depends on your current situation.
Are you binning your current OS?
If not then you could make do with that for now (assuming its XP) and save yourself a bit of cash.
If you are though, you would probably be better going for Vista. Why buy XP when you more than likely going to replace it in a few years anyway. An above average system will enable you to make use of some of the performance feature in Vista.
Who Should Buy Windows Vista Right Away?
Only you can decide if upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista right away makes sense for you. We do recommend, however, going for Windows Vista right away if you plan on buying a new system anyway. Five years after Windows XP, Windows Vista undoubtedly is the better operating system, period. For new systems, it isn't more expensive than Windows XP, but it gives you more comfort, better connectivity, more security and a future-proof software platform. We found it to be more accessible as well, so go for Vista if you are a beginner, rather than fighting with the difficulties of Windows XP when it comes to doing things.

Wait at least until February when most devices will have drivers for vista. I would personally wait until at least one service pack is out. Try Windows MCE 2005, thats pretty cool and fresh looking.

Vista SP1 will be out in the second half of the year (M$ are looking for large Corp users to pre-alpha test the Service pack!!) as well as the usuall in house (non-)testing of packs......
If you can, wait till June / july before getting Vista, or but a copy of XP that gives an upgrade Voucher then you can upgrade when ever you like.

Well i just jumped the gun and bought Vista x64. reason? I liked the Beta, and RC1, most of my hardware has x64 drivers, Why should i wait? if there is a bug, it usualy gets fixed asap, i have more problems with XP than i have had with vista.

I've had vista for about a week, and i'm happy with it!
I've not had any issues with mine except wmp sometimes being stupid but thats it.
I'd say go with vista to be honest....unless you really hate it.
