will you be able to use your old programs on it or will you have to wait for new versions of programs to come out?
Well vista home edition 32bit cheaper than Windows XP Home Edition! So sounds like Microsoft have finnaly listened to everyone saying Copyright will drop when there ****ing prices do!

Thank god my action pack comes next week!!!
Oh and BTW, most of your old programs should work, but some specific programs for peripherals might not.
Worth checking the manufacturer websites.
Not bad. Ultimate Retail is a bit high, but who here actually buys retail anyway? It's cheaper to get the OEM and buy an extra hard drive...always has been.

is it better getting the 32 or the 64 bit version? because i remember when xp 64 came out, i got it and the majority of my peripherals would not work such as printer and scanner because they didn't bother to make a driver for it

I think 32-bit. 64-bit hasn't really taken off. Plus there's a higher chance all you peripherals will be supported on 32-bit rather than 64-bit.

also have they changed the license agreement? because i remeber ppl saying you could only install it once before you used up your license agreement
[edit: misinterpreted previous post...]

I heard this as well and it seemed to be true.. but they have now changed it where you can re-install as many times as you want AS LONG as you fully uninstall the old one

How will they be able to determine if this has been done?

This is not really FINAL pricing is it. Just what one shop is selling them at. Everywhere will be about that or could be a lot cheaper.

would you say its worth getting vista now or wait a little while for it to be out on the shelfs for a couple of weeks?
because normally when you buy things on the first release day they dont normally have all the bugs fixed, do you think this is the same?
How will they be able to determine if this has been done?
IMO MS might have a little system monitoring all the serial codes - where they could check if say more than one system is using the same code.
or..
Genuine Validation Tool
Whenever you go online, it will most likely say... This xxxx is not Genuine. Click here to solve now.
The third option has happened to me before.. not saying anymore *cough* :p :o
Moving on, this list are pretty much the final prices, though as mentioned, some stores sell them cheaper/more expensive than others.
I personally would leave Vista until about a month as not every driver will be available even on the release date nor say a week after... similar situation to the previous operating systems. Then again, i'm gonna buy it as soon as its released as i know over 3/4 of my hardware has supported drivers.. and i might as well buy it now rather than later.
In the end, i also think Vista won't have as many bugs as usual considering they have been releasing RTM (Released To Manufacturer) versions.. presumably to be tested.

Oh...
That's disappointing.
Vista business isn't that far off Ultimate I suppose.

That didn't answer my question, I understand how they monitor what is installed on what hardware etc, but how will they be able to determine if it has been FULLY uninstalled? If you just format your hdd there is no way for it to notify MS that it has been uninstalled before you can go ahead and re install it.
It wouldn't suprise me if the software 'phones home' each time it's started, so if you use the old PC as well as the new one...

well most of the stuff i want to get for my new build is vista ready so do you think i will need to wait for drivers and stuff?
my new build
http://forums.kustompcs.co.uk/showthread.php?t=41414
because i want to get it all fairly soon but i dont want to clog it up by putting xp on there then later putting on vista
@ Mojo: haha tbh, i really don't know about the full install... can't remember where i heard it from... either several other forums.. or other computer websites..
@ daNtescpemstr:
core 2 quadro extreme edition qx6700
asus striker extreme
ocz 2gb (2x1gb) pc2-8500 1066mhz
bfg geforce 8800 gtx
bfg 1000w psu
lian li pc-s80 case
zalman cnps9500 aero flower
Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
With this as you set-up, you will have no issue at all.
If you could wait a while, i might be able to source out the latest chipset downloads for vista for that motherboard, if the disc doesn't contain them.
And oh... IIRC, nVidia drivers are still in its beta stages... though i think the final release would come out when Vista is out.
For more information, head over to http://www.vistaforums.com/Forum/Default.aspx
Especially check the Driver discussion. I find that fairly useful.

And upgrade only version at that, you've got to start the install from inside a copy of an existing OS - You can't just boot from the DVD and install. I was not impressed at that in the slightest, neither is anyone else I've spoken to. Hopefully MS will see sense and issues another set of serials to allow a proper clean install without faffing around. Most people I know got theirs delivered by UPS yesterday.

that rumour has been going round since Windows 9x apparently, and has never been true

Yes most programs will work, just drivers and some games that dont atm. (when vista starts being preinstalled on computers this should be completed.)
Office 97 still runs fine on XP anyways. Your system will run vista fine (4gig ram ) but wait until the drivers for your printer/scanner are out is my advice.

Yeh, I was incredibly annoyed when I couldn't boot from DVD...
Mine came through yesterday by UPS aswell.
That's Microsofts way of giving all you action pack subscribers two fingers for not being real businesses.
Saves them asking for Company number

Looks like I'll be getting Ultimate OEM then. Or I could spend £100 extra to get that very fancy-looking box.

Yes, because ours is an imaginary one, that only exists in the minds of a few people
I havent really followed the Vista-lution so whats the difference between the basic and premium is it just like home and pro?
For my pc (see my sig) would it be better for vista 32 or 64bit? I dont really know the difference.

Google 'Vista Versions' The Microsoft page explaining the difference, is indeed the top link!
64bit Vista is going to be the same story as 64bit XP for a wee while; lack of decent driver support etc.
Slightly OT, but I've just been given a free copy of Vista Business Edition to use (which is the same as Ultimate, minus the Media Centre crap or BitLocker), which is perfectly fine by me. My University rocks :)
I'm gonna try it out, but I don't think I'll be keeping it. 1GB of RAM, single-core CPU and an unsupported chipset? No ta. Ubuntu will be the way :)

I can tell you, you definately don't need dual core to run Vista... and it can run nicely on 512MB of RAM aswell.
