View Full Version : Favourite films.
Ok, we've just got a new movies forum section, lets find out a bit more about our users and their tastes, see what everyone likes. Lets have your top 5-10 films, no more than 10, maybe a small explanation for some of the movies if needed. I would let you know my top 10, but i can't be bothered typing them out right now, so i'll do it tomorrow.....if you're really lucky.

My favourite film has to be 'Dune' - it's old now, but a classic - loved the books, the film and the games... I just seem to enjoy the whole theme of it !
I liked Dune, not seen the new version though, the series of movies or something like that. The original was great though, good story, and the sand worms, the spice, the whole shebang, mixed into a good movie.

Good choices, but the mummy movies? I liked them, but i think there are soooo many better movies, quite surprised you picked them moley.
I bought training day on dvd, cheap at 13.99. Bloody great purchase, would recommend the movie to anyone, apart from girls aged 1-15, OAP's, people who suffer from epilepsy, psychopaths, schizophrenics, dogs, cats, goldfish and chimps. No offence meant to the goldfish, but it is quite violent.

Fair enough, it's gonna take me a day or two to figure out my top ten, don't think mine will be in any specific order either. Too many good movies, not enough time.

I would have to agree with Moldiver on most.
I seem to love a lot of love it / hate it type films (ie. The Crow, The Fifth Element).
1. Blade Runner (The classic)
2. Magnolia (Takes effort but well worth it in the end).
3. American Beauty (Kevin Spacey doing what just about every middle aged man wished he could).
4. Leon (Jean Reno, what more can be said).
5. Memento (confusing the first time round but just superb).
6. The Crow (Pretty close to the original graphic novel written when the author lost a loved one and needed a way to express his grief).
7. Seven (Just plain dark)
8. Ghost in the Shell (will there ever be a part II (*crosses fingers*),
9. Akira (just keep on watching it and seeing new takes on the movie).
10. Saving Private Ryan (War is not so glamourous as often portrayed - nuff said)
Just had to add a couple of TV movies in here as well.
a. By Dawns Early Light (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0099197).
b. The Stand (Steven King)
c. Band of Brothers.
No doubt I will think of more when I get home.
Cheers

Horses for courses I guess :D

I agree - Bourne Identity is very good - unusual for a Damon film - lol.
We were soldiers is equally good - and much better than the semi awful signs. When will the director realise trying a sixth sense style ending each film is no good as they get worst and worst and worst!
Little Gem
20-09-2002, 16:01
Just seen Signs which is b****y excellent, not only does it have Mel Gibson in it, the storyline is thought provoking and the film makes you jump in the right places.
Im a fan of horror films but im more likely to laugh at them than be scared! Blood 'n' guts is great its the mind messing stuff, the stuff that could be real that gets me, although i never have nightmares.
Other favourites include, Tomb Raider (the plus being that Angelina is mighty fine), Mothman Prophecies, anything with Robin Williams or Jim Carey, Ghost is everyones favourite, and im quite getting into Jackie Chan films - rush hour 1 and 2 particularly.
Know i dont post often but this is a subject i love, when im not studying im watching DVD's or going to the flicks.
PJ Matthews
21-09-2002, 01:45
Warning if you plan to watch signs my ramblings may spoil it slightly for you.
I'm sorry but on a whole Signs is not that good. The story line is reasonable if not very much dumbed down. There is alot of comedy in it, and you don't jump so much as go - oh at the scary points. This film would have been so much better if they had stuck to using shadows and reflections to depict the aliens playing upon the viewers imagination. After all, no one can create a more scary figure than ones own imagination - the alien shown is just plain dumb, un imaginative and destroys any sense of fear as you can't help but laugth at this apawling attempt at an alien.
The 'chain of events that you should have seen' just didn't work that well. In sixth sense if you didn't notice he was a ghost you think - DOH - how didn't I see that? With this you think, do I really give a sh*t his wife is meant to die, hes meant to give up religion and his son has breathing problems all because of the inevitable invasion of the earth? No - there is no mystery to this film, the ending is plain stupid. The director and writer should of carried on with the unseen alien line.
The director really needs to break away from this kind of story telling and make something else unique as three attempts is kicking the ass out of it and only once did he even remotely get it right.
Its not a terrible film by any stretch of the imagination, its not a thinking mans film either. Its just a generally decent film that could of been so much more but was ruined. You'll find many reviewers agreeing with my point of view.
So once your over that disapointment - why not go see Insomnia or hop over the pond and see One hour photo. If not - wait for road to perdition (its bound to bring home the oscars).
This week I have mostly watched:
Cinema:
Insomnia
Bourne Identity
Signs
DVD:
Pulp fiction
Jay and Silent Bob
Momento
Cast Away
No order.:
1. The Matrix (okay no order but thats first :D)
2. Ninja Scroll
3. Armitage (Both)
4. American Pie 1/2
5. Resident Evil

Play rules. Just thought I have to say that :)
My favourite movie of all time is The Matrix. Has everything I like, and nothing which I hate. It looks like the sequels will be brill as well :)
The rest of my top ten would consist of the following (in no particular order)
Memento - I saw it about a month ago and it's just brilliant
Terminator 2 - Better than The Terminator, and how many sequels do that?
Fifth Element - Good action, and nice love twist there...awww ;)
Stargate - It started SG-1, and that can't be a bad thing
Forrest Gump - Funny, lovely, emotional and smart; the film not forrest!
Short Circuit - Can't remember much of either of them, I remember wanting a Johnny 5 though :)
Speed - Action packed, decent story, a crap sequel and Dennis Hopper as the best villian ever
Star Wars - All of them are good, even the latest two. Favourite of them is between The Empire Stikes Back and Attack of the Clones
Back To The Future - My favourite trilogy of all time (so far, the matrix trilogy looks promising ;)). Favourite of them has to be Part II.
I know alot of you guys gunna complain about my choices of favourite star wars movie. I don't care, my list. :)
