Hi,
When I first got this Shuttle about 5 months ago, I knew that I had to make it silent, the noise of it out of the box is just silly. So, I set about modding it and it's now SILENT - by silent I mean that I can easily sleep with it on, the only thing that makes a small noise is the hard drive.
The key to getting rid of the noise was the PSU. I bought a Cupid 2677 case which has an external PSU with internal fanless DC converter... I stripped the PSU out the case and put it in my Shuttle.

It's attached with a couple of velcro pads, the barrel plug is fixed to the back at the moment, not very neatly but it'll do for the time being. It only 55w which isn't brilliant but it runs the components in the system just fine. It only has 1 4-pin molex connector so i've added 3 y-splitters to get the required amount (hdd, cdrw, case lighting, fan).

I'm running a VIA C3 933 which is fine for what I use my PC for, school work, web surfing, web design, few games etc. I've got a massive heatsink on it and so i've relocated the HDD (Seagate U Series 60gb 5400rpm) to the floppy bay and use a floppy over my LAN in my ADSL router/firewall PC.
Just to keep my HDD cool I wanted a quiet fan on the back of the case. I modded the back to fit a 80mm 12db Papst, which I run at 7v for complete silence.

I've also got my 60mm blowhole on the side - this isn't really used anymore so it's just for decoration, but it sure looks good after a bit of Starburst Silver has been applied!

Overall, i'm really pleased with the results. I've kept everything inside the case so it's still just as portable as before, and I can watch DVD's or output to TV without annoying buzzing background noise. I'm well chuffed. :p
