Hi,

When I first got this Shuttle about 5 months ago, I knew that I had to make it silent, the noise of it out of the box is just silly. So, I set about modding it and it's now SILENT - by silent I mean that I can easily sleep with it on, the only thing that makes a small noise is the hard drive.

The key to getting rid of the noise was the PSU. I bought a Cupid 2677 case which has an external PSU with internal fanless DC converter... I stripped the PSU out the case and put it in my Shuttle.

It's attached with a couple of velcro pads, the barrel plug is fixed to the back at the moment, not very neatly but it'll do for the time being. It only 55w which isn't brilliant but it runs the components in the system just fine. It only has 1 4-pin molex connector so i've added 3 y-splitters to get the required amount (hdd, cdrw, case lighting, fan).

I'm running a VIA C3 933 which is fine for what I use my PC for, school work, web surfing, web design, few games etc. I've got a massive heatsink on it and so i've relocated the HDD (Seagate U Series 60gb 5400rpm) to the floppy bay and use a floppy over my LAN in my ADSL router/firewall PC.

Just to keep my HDD cool I wanted a quiet fan on the back of the case. I modded the back to fit a 80mm 12db Papst, which I run at 7v for complete silence.

I've also got my 60mm blowhole on the side - this isn't really used anymore so it's just for decoration, but it sure looks good after a bit of Starburst Silver has been applied!

Overall, i'm really pleased with the results. I've kept everything inside the case so it's still just as portable as before, and I can watch DVD's or output to TV without annoying buzzing background noise. I'm well chuffed. :p

Unfortunately not, but I don't really have a use for it anyway. :)

Nice very nice.
I can still sleep with a delta 60mm in the same room at full pelt. hehe. :D
Just takes a couple of weeks to get used to it, but you sleep heavily so you dont get awoken by alarms, phones, dorr knocking etc, which became a problem untill i changes my cpu cooler. :D

Some excellent work there, can you tell me what heatsink you've used on the CPU? I assume it's passive cooling now?

I used the heatsink available from Kustom, bit of a bargain as well! :) Yeah, it's running passive.

BTW, i've now sold this system because I wanted something a bit more powerful for uni, so i've got a SS40G with XP 1800+ and a nice TFT monitor :D I've replaced the northbridge fan with a zalman heatsink and put a 21db Panaflo fan in the exhaust and its reasonably quiet, I think removing the rather enclosed grill on the heatpipe should sort things out! :)
