Fantastic transormation of the bed-spread too, in the first pics :D
That's superb - where did you get the original box from, and was the Shuttle PSU obtained separately?

It is a really nice custom case there and a reason why a few folk are getting excited about the nForce2 integrated motherboards.

Thats a very nice system, if you wanted to, you could add a small lcd display to get a VCR/DVD player look. Very nice idea.

I have never cut blow holes before - and I have one of these cases now for an epia project (features a full sized pioneeer dvd-rom in there). Whats the best way to get a perfect hole?
A hole saw. Or as i use a Nibbler, then just file the edges to remove any burr's and make em smooth.

I love this case - I can't wait to peel the film off and look at the glourious - hopefully unscrated aluminium beneath when I'm sorted. Mine is a little different to what the guys have done here. Mine features an eden motherboard mounted with the ports facing the rear rather than the side. I was hoping to use a full sized slot loading dvd drive but after positioning everything I've found the harddisk won't fit no matter what PSU I use.
The result will be using a slimline I guess which I didn't want to do but looks like I'll have to unless somewhere sells cupid style external PSUs.

On another note does anyone have any dead AMIGAs they'd like to give me the rubber feet from - possibly the small LED boards that were the system lights.

Okay, well thats me convinced, im gonna build one of these cuties cept with a window in the top, just need to ask, where to find the main hallu box? -- Stuart & Roadrunner, excellent work guys!

Maplin - box is pc26. Mine has a window in the lid. Its a piece ive been saving for a long time. It has lots of small white dots on it giving like a haze but allowing you to see in - it just looks cool - show you what I mean soon.

what sys board u using/gonna use?
PJ Matthews
22-09-2002, 23:39
I have choosen the Epia system board purely to create more space in there for a DVD drive. I am the Epia man and love this board so it was only natural I use it. If you want something with a little more oomth I found a small system board with two PCI slots and an intergrated AMD Duron 900 (PM me for details).
I plan to build another version of this when the Epia 2 which hopefully will bump down next month.
Taa
PEEJ
Are you talking about a full size dvd? Also, i was thinking, couldn't you tecniqually just make a normaly psu external? perhaps hide it inside a small hallu box and use a ton of y splitters and chrome loom? that would give alot more space in the box.
PJ Matthews
23-09-2002, 00:03
I wanted to use a full sized pioneer slot loader purely to look good but im having problems fitting a harddisk in there as well although i think it can be done.
Moving the PSU external will simply lead to mess. This unit is designed to be sleek and all in one. This is the reason a cupid style external brick (its tiny and can be disconnected) or internal sv - 24 (very very very tiny the sv24 psu) needs to be used.
Using the duron board I refered to will allow you to consider adding an all in wonder pci card for tv capture as well, although you can probably forget about an internal full sized dvd drive.
Its trial and error. For instance I can get everything to fit if the DVD is mounted facing to the side but I really want it at the front. My next unit will most likely feature it at the side with it operating length ways if ya get what I mean.
PJ
yeah, i guess so, i really didnt want to spend on a lappy dvd though, perhaps the box could be modded so the full sized dvd sits on top? it would still be all-in-one cept with a lump on the top :D And where do you get the shuttle psu from? That is, if its still available?
wow, is the shuttle psu really that (http://www.ex168.com.tw/shuttle/new/Shuttle3.htm) small??
PJ Matthews

The only people who sell shuttle PSUs are gemma.co.uk

The hallu box you can get from Maplin!(.co.uk) but the one size that will be any good is only 2" high. So you need to find a small PSU or do some PSU modding.. which is what I'm resorting to. On maplin, go to the site, then Enclosures and Fittings, Instrument Cases and then Aluminium boxes.
try looking at this http://www.michael-dieckmann.de/projekt_luefterlose_pc.htm
only prob is I cant speak german, but he seems to have made his own psu!

noo, my tiny 'um?' was implying 'Where the hell do i find these shuttle psus on gemma.co.uk' :)

Under aluminium cases - I know it doesn't make sense.
As for that DIY PSU - thats simply amazing - wonder if the guy speaks any English as to give us some instructions? Me feels a net search commin on!
PEEJ
Is this the size of PSU ur looking for??
http://www.mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=9#p30
PJ Matthews
23-09-2002, 23:33
No - WAY too big - the shuttle one is semi perfect and is tiny but hard to get hold of and expensive.
couldn't you just take a psu apart? then it'd be smaller :), other than that my other idea is kidnap the german guy and teach him english.
PJ Matthews
24-09-2002, 17:20
Taken a few apart and its not good reading. Firstly the board inside is way too big for the side of case and to squeeze what we want in there. Secondly its too high - they all feature pretty big radiators/heatsinks in there. Shuttle psus may be the only way to go unless:
I NEED MORE POWER (http://www.mp3car.com/usersites/heslop8/psu.htm)
lol cool, but i decided i don't mind my box being slightly bigger (6inchs high) so i got a soloution which allows it to still be "small an' cute" but also fit able with a full size atx mobo, full size psu, and full size expan. cards as well as dvd and floppy easily :)

Whats that then?? Come on! let us in on the secret! :P I'm going to "try" and fit everything in the 2" maplin box.. I STILL can't find the shuttle PSU on gemma.co.uk - can't see an "aluminium cases" option on the main menu :| any pointers? How much is the PSU anyway?
Cheers,
Welly
ok.. found the PSUs.. 34 quid. not too offensive a price.

PJ Matthews
24-09-2002, 18:31
Our of curiosity Welly - have you choosen a motherboard and Splaty do tell of the box your using! :).
PJ
hehe, well, its not a box as such, it costs about 30 quid, its 2 of the PC26 boxes, then an AB13 box, and finnally a AB15, it takes a bit of work but you have the sys board taking up the bottom box but leaving just enough space at the right end for the psu (sitting upwards) tho, im not sure if it will fit if the psu has dual fans. Then comes the second box, the top of the first and bottom of the second would need to be cut according to each other so the heatsink'd fit and psu (its upwards remember) basically just a large hole cut in the middle top of box1 and bottom of box2, if ya get me. Finally the top layer, depending on your situation you could subsitute this for simply another PC26 box, but this version should fit the psu and full size expansion (including geforce4 etc) This way ends up looking like a 4 inch box (2 PC26's..) and 1 2 inch box in the top right (for the top bit of the psu) and 1 3 inch box in the top left (to stop the ex. cards being exposed. Obviously, this will require somewhat more work and modification, but this is what im going to try. So to recap:-
Mobo sits on the bottom box with power switch etc
Dvd, floppy and hdd sit in the second box (this is going to require supports)
The top of the psu and ex. cards are at the top, in two 'towers', So, if you need to use full size ex. cards the whole thing will be 7" but only bcuz of the left tower.
I measured this out using a Enermax Dual Fan 350w PSU, and it was a VERY tight fit between the end of the mobo and the psu, So i'm gonna use a single fan psu.
And lasty, a nice (crap) drawing :)
__
| | <- Ex. Cards
|__|______|__| <- PSU
|__|______|__| <- dvd, flop, hdd
|_________|__| <- mobo
Whew, long post :)
Edit - Conclusion: Okay, so its bigger than just the pc26, but im pretty sure that it'l get some interest if ya take it to a lan :) (which is what mines for) I'll be starting building either 2moz or thursday, so ill post some pics mayb

I have! As purchased from a user on this very forum, I've got a K6-2 500 Mhz on a Baby AT board. It's quite tiny really and should fit the old Maplin case itself. I'll get that Shuttle PSU and either try and fit this full sized DVD-ROM drive of mine or failing that, hunt down a laptop DVD-ROM drive and stuff that in. I've even got a 20 gig hard drive to stick in the bugger! Got more or less everything ready to go apart from the PSU and Case. It will have to have a window me thinks.. not a square one though.. a funky shaped on I reckon. And some lights!
Cheers!
Welly
this is the only lappy dvd i know of: http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/product.php?view=5408 its a bit steep tho :\

If you want a second hand one incase you mess up look on ebay - theres one on there right now for £14.99 buy it now.
Using the size of motherboard your planning to use you will have no option but to use a slim dvd drive mounted on top of a harddisk. The way round I want everything means I have to do the same.
This should be one good looking case when done :).
PJ
I found another place other than gemma.co.uk who sell the psu (not sure if I'm allowed to mention the name on the board, though they're out of stock anyway!)
I still can't find the sv24 psu on gemma, someone please help!
But for good news, my Maplin aluminium box arrived today!
It is ok to post a link to something that Kustom dont stock as long as you dont abuse it.

From Maplin of course! :) www.maplin.co.uk (http://www.maplin.co.uk) then go to enclosures and fittings, then instrument cases and then aluminium boxes.
Man, maybe you should read this post better? someone answered that ages ago an i already got the boxes lol

Excellent! it's got the dimensions too! 45mm! which will fit just about nicely in the Maplin case!
Someone really needs to set up a Maplin PC26 modding web site! ;)

Your all welcome to space on www.walibe.com (http://www.walibe.com) - its gonna be a small form factor web site. When I get time remains to be seen.
cool, me and welly were disccusing this, a site around that type of thing would be pretty neat, there does seem to be alot of interest in this cutte lil maplin wonder box :)
hey, we'll have to sort something out.. I'm going to get my maplin box this weekend. I might have to rethink this. I do want an all in that single maplin box, but I've a feeling my mobo that I was planning to use is going to be no good. Even with the AGP riser, the card will stick up higher than 2" I think :(
I'll have to hunt down a mobo with onboard video. More expensive! :P Might have to go down the Mini-ITX route.
Ah well, gives me ANOTHER board for ANOTHER project. I've got 2 mobos kicking about now! :) And enough bits to build another 2 PCs, minus cases. Bah! It's an expensive hobby!
Cheers,
Welly

The mini ITX boards are ideally suited to this project. Otherwise, grab yourself a micro atx nforce or nforce 2 board (nforce 2 from late October).

i've got the 4 boxes to do my idea at the top of this page, and im starting work tommorow, this one can fit basically a whole atx sized comp lol remember :)

And to quote Norm (Discovery Home and Leisure) - "Safety glasses". Your gonna be doin alot of cutting me things :).
It maybe of been easier for you to type aluminium instrument case into google.co.uk and picked up a case that way rather than this method. However if pulled off well it could look good.
GOOD LUCK
