I just read this (http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1234566,00.html) on Sky News. Apparently he was driving a "jet-powered Vampire car" at speeds up to 280mph which overturned.

I hope He's alright cos He's a funny little sod :(

Just seen this on the news.

Tell you what - they don't say 'critical' for nothing!

I hope he makes a full and swift recovery, but i fear the worst.

It's not only that he'll be missed, but they'll probably cancel Top Gear as well, seeing as everybody and thier granny seems to complain about it!

Get well soon, man! :(

Terrible news; I hope he makes a full recovery and is back on our screens soon - if for nothing else than I won't hear the end of it from the missus, who went to school with him (and ensures she points the fact out every time his pearly whites grace the TV!)....

but...... I have to say this....

When I saw him taking to a Porsche Cayenne on a dusty gravel road on tarmac tyres in an effort to race a skydiver, I really did suggest at the time (before the article had even started) just what levels of madness the programme was heading towards, and what on earth Richard was up to. I like to think he made his own decision to do all of these things and is certainly not forced to do it by his producers, because he's clearly an intelligent man with a lust for all things petrol, just like so many of us. But having foolishy attempted a similar thing myself and coming out of it alive, lucky but with a rather damaged 'ego', I really started to question some of the antics this lot got up to in the name of a good show. When the article clearly showed what a battle it is to keep 3 tonnes of Porsche on gravel with only road tyres, I felt my point had been proved. When he hit a camera car head on after the filming - well, said it all really.

Hitting a block of ice head on while racing a motor-powered canoe, while only at low speed, started making me think "is this all set up for the show?" or are the presenters starting to reach a limit that I personally feel isn't necessary to make a good TV show?

Now I'm the first person you'll find waving the "Do what makes you happy" flag and Lord knows I wouldn't turn down an option to do many a dangerous thing in a motor car, but please - Hammie - do it for yourself and please don't feel the need you have to do this in the name of interesting TV.

God speed and get well soon!

I met the guy a few years back at one of the Weston Wheels shows, couldn't say a bad thing about him, really nice guy.

Such a shame that this has happened to him, and I hope that he makes a speedy recovery. :)

Brumster - james may said in a interview that richard is fear less and does his own stunts as he wants to so nothing forcing him its the same as any car enthusiast show them a porsche and say you reckon you can get there before the sky diver they will be straight at it the tyres being tarmac ones makes it more of a buz for them

Aye lets hope the little man gets well soon..only to face Clarkson and Mays ribbing when he returns

brumster
21-09-2006, 12:14
I hope I conveyed in my post my belief that he did it all of his own free will; I wouldn't suggest anything else. If that wasn't clear, I re-iterate it.

But driving a gravel track on production road tyres just because it gives more of a "buzz"? Well, you call it that, some might call it sheer stupidity -"tomatoes, tomatos"....

I'm a huge Top Gear fan and never miss an episode. It gives me endless hours of entertainment.

However that's the least of my thoughts at the moment- since I found out last night I've been thinking about Richard and his family. Nothing would be greater than seeing him return to Top Gear to a rousing ovation from the crowd and endless ribbing from May and Clarkson.

But in the meantime I just wish his family the best, himself the speediest of recoveries and good thoughts to his friends.

NOTE: also read on the BBC update that Clarkson and May received lots of thumbs-up and crossed-fingers from motorists whilst on their way to visit Richard today. Shows how hundreds of motorists out there love the plucky li'l feller :)

I know that TG is the most downloaded program in the world, apparently, so there's plenty of well-wishers out there.

People from the PistonHeads website have set up a donation page in Richard Hammond's name for the Air Ambulance that was used.

Link: HERE (http://www.justgiving.com/PHRichardHammond?page=1#donationtable)

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance relies solely on the generosity of individuals and sponsors to help save lives across the region. It needs to raise £3600 per day to keep its helicopter and highly trained paramedics in the air. Each year it attends over 1000 incidents requiring emergency air assistance

If anyone feels like donating please do. Air Ambulances do a remarkable job nationwide.

Fat Jez

Not trying to be funny, but there are loads of air ambulances around the country all needing funding. It would make more sense to me to support your local one, rather than support the one in Leeds, which most of use will never (God forbid) need to use.

Cheers,

Ok good news!.
"Doctors treating Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond said his condition has improved and he has been moved out of intensive care."
His condition has now been downgraded to Stable.

And typical clarkson :)

Clarkson also revealed that he had made Hammond smile during the visit by calling him "a crap driver''.

He told The Sun: "He was lying peacefully with a black eye but didn't react so I tried something else.

"I said, 'The reason you're here is because you're a crap driver'. He then smiled at me. It was an amazing moment, very moving.''

May was originally due to drive the Vampire for the programme, but switched places with his colleague ahead of the event.

May said: "Despite everything he's been through he still seems like the Richard I know and love.''

[GPO]Solitaire

according to most reports the only visable sign Hammond has is a black eye, No Broken bones or other injuries (except the nasty bash to the head thing!)

Two of my favourite quotes from the incident so far:

James May admitted to being "a touch unmanly" at one point. Bless him! Captain Slow shed a tear for his good buddy :)

When Richard was awake he smiled over at May and said "Hello, *face."

* it rhymes with "Mock" and May's renowned for saying it a lot.

Glad to see he's doing so well, so quickly. You can't keep a good Hamster down.

News in from AOL, alot of you will find out in a couple of minuites on FNWJR. But for the ones that missed it.

"Top Gear star Richard Hammond still has no memory of the two weeks immediately after his high-speed crash, he has revealed in his first TV interview since the accident.
Hammond, 37, was left fighting for his life when he crashed while filming a 288mph stunt for the BBC2 show.
But he made a miraculous recovery and instead of remaining in hospital for 15 months, as doctors predicted, he was out in weeks.
Hammond, nicknamed The Hamster, also told Friday Night With Jonathan Ross that he is planning a polar race for his next stunt on Top Gear, which returns in January.
He still has no recollection of the fortnight after the crash in his jet-powered dragster."

"He said of the moment the stunt went wrong: "I swore and then it went dark... I was driving and then it was two weeks later and I was in Leeds (in hospital). There was a sense of 'Oh bugger'.

"Apparently, I was awake on the way to the helicopter and I got a bit fighty - I wanted to do a piece to camera, but my eyes were pointing in different directions.

"I have no recollection of that, or the first few weeks. I sort of heard stuff going on but I wasn't in it (a coma) for very long."

"I had post-traumatic amnesia, five-second memory, it happens as a result of brain injury. In hospital I was completely useless. I'd look at the menu and order my favourite, cottage pie. Five minutes later it arrived and I said: 'That's great, it's my favourite, how did you know?'"

Hammond said he had only one visible physical injury: "I had a slight scab on my shin, and that was it. All the damage was to my brain.""

Yeah I thought that too but the strain and stress of an accident like that is bound to add a few years.

They did joke about him not getting back into the faster cars and doing the crazier things he used to, but how long will it be before he is trying something again? He said it himself, all he wanted to do was go faster. That feeling/want/need doesn't just go away, the adrenalin junkie in him will be eager to get back out there and get the blood pumping again.

That's not entirely true - I think you'll find the mass opinion is that he is a well-liked character and people are glad to see him back on TV and in one piece.

I felt a bit edgy watching the crash actually, but at least knew he was well again. If he had been killed or crippled, then I expect many people wouldn't actually feel comfortable watching the video (although it probably wouldn't have been played in that instance anyway)
