Gutted to hear that... he was a legendary presenter.

'Croc Hunter' was killed by a stingray this morning.

Yeah... heard it on the news earlier! Sad, sad news indeed :(

You wouldn't have thought he was in his mid-forties! He was so full of energy, and bubbling over with enthusiasm for his work... which involved a lot more than working with crocodiles of course.
Even though he was best known over here as the 'Crocodile Hunter'... he was a very keen conservationist.

The stingray barb apparently went right into his heart... and he died at the scene... so at least he won't have suffered [too long] - if indeed he was concious for long at all after being stung?

Gutted :(

Absolutely gutted :( just can't believe it, loved him to bits :(

I loved the way he campaigned tirelessly for the welfare of endangered Crocs and gained huge support for them from his Croc Diaries and Crocodile Hunter series, love him or loathe him no one can dispute the amount of good he did in the World

It's so ironic though that after wrestling so many poisonous Snakes and Crocs that it's something that rarely kills that killed him :( I suppose he died happy, helping the Animals that he loved so much.

Lets hope that his work continues through Bindi and Bob and they will be as passionate and as enthusiastic about these Animals as their Dad was :)

Massive shame!

He was brilliant, and really made young people aware of environmental issues - as well as ****ing about with snakes and that - Which was always fun!

I'm sure he'll be messing about with his animals in heaven!

Conservation through Education is the aim of his Zoo, to educate the masses about endangered Crocs, Alligators and other Reptiles :) and omg he did that so well :)

I've got all the respect in the world for Steve Irwin. The man was a legend, and will be forever regarded as the craziest bloke in history.

Have to salute him for what he's done for certain species in this world :)

It just doesn't seem possible, I know it's not right to compair it to the impact of Diana's death, but when Diana died, I kept kind of waiting for a report to roll in saying she was OK, or (I know this sounds silly) but for her to jump out from somewhere and say surprise.

When someone near you dies, it's hard to accept, but with people like Steve Irwin, I don't know, he just seemed invinsible. I find my self still hoping that one of the "nice" people in the world isn't gone.

I know what you mean about him seeming invincible. This is so sad. He was such an awesome character. He donated a lot of his money to zoos and conservation funds. He has definitely left a hole in this world. :(

I could not believe this had happened, I found out when I got home from school this afternoon. He was a bloody great man, I've met him once or twice, he was probably seen as one of australias icons.

My manager at work tongiht was crying because she knew her younger kids would be upset, they travelled down a few weeks ago and had met him and they all loved him.

I think its a good thing, that he went doing something he loved, and most of the world would agree with that.

R.I.P Steve Irwin

Ok, at the risk of getting flamed, and please note that I do think it's very VERY sad that this guy's dead, leaving two young daughters, but

Whilst Steve Irwin clearly did a lot of good work with regards the (mainly reptilian) education of the masses, isn't it also true to say that the vast majority of his appeal was the fact that he regularly pi$$ed off the animals he was showcasing in a manner that wasn't really necessary???

One recent show I saw had him actively turning over rocks and tree-trunks in pursuit of highly venomous snakes and then grabbing them by the tail and avoiding their bite with lots of dramatic "Oooaarghs". All very entertaining but totally without reason.

If the camera's hadn't been rolling I'm sure he would have used a very long forked rod and protective gear.

I guess a lot of this was encouraged by his producers and directors but I wouldn't be surprised if immediately before being killed by what is normally such a placid and graceful creature, he wasn't poking it with a big stick or some other stupid stunt.

David Attenburgh isn't dead and I don't think the BBC ever asked him nipple-tweak a gorilla.

Am I also the only sick-puppy round here that wants to see the video they were filming at the time of the tragic event?

Read the thread first (http://forums.kustompcs.co.uk/showpost.php?p=367282&postcount=12)...

That would require effort, which I just dont have today.

RIP, real shame that as his animal conservation work definetly captured the publics imagination.

Probably not, Stingrays causing human deaths are rare according to most of the reports, this seems like a tragic accident due to the barb puncturing his heart.

Great presenter , completely different to the likes of others.

When you consider the crazy things the guy did , sharks , snakes , hippos , crocs then a realiteively passive creature accidentally kills him is staggering.

Man thats gonna hurt his wife , she would have expected it with the other animals but not that....tragic.

I read a thing about how he died, and it said that the stinger punctured thru his chest and into his heart. It said that he was still alive right after the incident and actually pulled the stinger out of his chest, and then collapsed. He was pronounced dead shortly after. Wow. :(

I'm amazed at how I keep thinking how sad this is. Shallow as it may sound, normally when someone famous dies I feel bad for a bit, but then let it go. Since I heard the news this morning, I have been thinking that it is quite a loss. Commiserations go to his family.

People generally perceive celebrities as immortals and so it is truely a shock when one is killed in the prime of their life. Accidents happen but the world will keep turning and life will go on.

Australia have lost an icon and the world has lost a hero, mostly though the Irwins have lost a husband, father, and son.
It often seemed like Steve Irwin had such a cavalier but caring approach to dealing with animals and there was always an element of danger. Sadly, Steve simply tempted fate once too often.
As many have said already, he died doing what he loved most. He was a world renouned celebrity and will be surely missed by all who knew him.

Rest in peace Steve.

Shortly after 11:00am local time on 4 September 2006, Irwin was riding his tricycle when he was fatally pierced in the ear by a penis while diving in Queensland's Batt Reef, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef.

Some people have no respect for the dead
But surely there's more than enough people putting him on a pedestal to balance out the black humour.

Edit: Oh, sorry, I didn't read your post properly. I thought you were talking about the images Kynoch posted. I'm anti-Wikipedia-vandalism!
