hi everyone,
ve got a budget of about £1000 to make a music production pc capable of runing Pro Tools M powered and some others...cubase etc. It needs to meet some criteria and i have based my current proposed setup around this.
It has to be quiet, AMD based, very powerful, simple (no RAID) and errrm good. Im going to build it with my mate who builds PC's but I need to get my setup sorted out so i can buy it all first. Below is what im thinking of.....

AMD X2 64 5000+
Crucial 2GB 92x1gb) DDR2-64000 800MHz Ballistix Dual Channel Kit
Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe MOBO
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 16MB 10,000RPM (for project files)
Samsung 80GB HDD (bog standard one for programm files)
Gigabyte X300SE 128MB Graphics card
Zalman XPNS9500-AM2 Aero Flower CPU Cooler
Antec P180 Advanced Super Midi Tower
Logitech s-510 keyboard and mouse
Windows XP Home

Thats it basically. I wouldnt mindhvaing a little help with the graphics card too. I know nothing about graphics cards but i need one to run two samsung TFT monitors well. Im not gonna be playing games so it doesnt need to be fantastic but it does need to be stable and cheap.

Think thats it, i wont be doing anything crazy like overclocking cause it scares the **** out of me. Please let me know what you think whether you just know stuff about custom pc's or youre into music production.

My email is funkmasterkp@hotmail.com

Thanks

please dont post the same thread twice, :)
have a look at the kustoms shop (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/)
you'll get a lot of good stuff there.
Seems like a good system, you'll get that for under a k.
I'd upgrade the graphics card though if you want to play games (at least 256)

I'll say it before anyone else does. Currently the best CPU's you can get are the Intel Conroe's so if you are looking at spending nearly £400 on a CPU and motherboard I would advise you to get an E6600 CPU with a decent ASUS motherboard like the Asus P5N32-SLi SE Deluxe. You would need to pick a different CPU cooler of course but apart from that the rest of it looks ok.

Some nice cards here linky (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Kustom_PCs_Shop_Graphics_Cards_43.html)

Also a bigger hard drive unless your just planning light hw and not too many games and the music thingy. linky2 (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Hard_Disks.html)

I'm not bothered what anyone else thinks, in my experience its worth going for xp proffesional, heres all the os's- home, prof, 64, and mce. linky3 (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Operating_Systems.html#a6604)

Edit: oops sorry you got 2 hdd's:o

I would go for one of the lower Sapphire radeon cards - the passively cooled ones, quiet is best for studio machines

I would remove the email address if I were you cos anyone can view it.

You should be able to get passive coolers or silent ones for the graphics cards.

I would also recommend a bigger hard drive like 250GB or such as hard drives are so cheaper now.

Graphics card - quite an easy one really :)

asus do a range of ati (http://uk.asus.com/products2.aspx?l1=2&l2=8) and nvidia (http://uk.asus.com/products2.aspx?l1=2&l2=6) graphics cards that do passive cooling - they usually get good reviews too. Its just how much you want to pay

I would also suggest looking at having 2 7200.10 320gb seagate drives, they rival the raptor for speed but lose the noise (raptors are noisy)

I would also look at something like the scythe (http://www.scythe-eu.com/products_cpu.php) cpu cooler, they can be run passively with the right case cooling :)

I'd also suggest getting fans which are quiet (not got a clue what people are suggesting at the moment) and a lian li case (pc7 range is usually regarded as good) but the fans could be quieter. The s80 (not on kpc site) was designed to be a quiet pc too

Why AMD? As suggested 6600 is a great chip. Cooling been impressed with the large zalman sinks running v slow. Hard drives... you'll need far more hard disk space (although networked storage could be the best idea here). I currently have arround 600gb of recordings and it'll just keep growing.

You don't need anything super special for music. My old 3000+xp rig and newer 3200venice do an ample job of all recording I've asked them to do. Consentrate your efforts on making it quiet. There's a big difference between "that pc's quiet" and "that pc's on!!!"

I would recommend the Ati X1000 and Nvidia Geforce 7 change as they are the lasted generation and also more power efficent. This means that will be cooler and better for passive cooling instead of needing a fan.

I would recommend the Zalman 7700-CU (http://kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_2662.html) for the CPU as they have a lareg cooling sureface and big 120mm fan so they are quiet.

You can either get Zalman (http://kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Northbridge_Coolers.html) coolers for the northbridge but check the layout of your motherboard first as some will be in the way of the graphics card.
