If it's a dial-up connection, try connecting your phone to it. If you hear a lot of crackling, then it's the phone company screwing up again!

Happens to me all the time! :(

I gat a cable connection, but the problem has seemed to have sorted itself out, ATM i am at a mates house using his dial-up connection, and all i can say is down to all 56K modems, you dont realise how damn crap they are untill you are used to using a cable connection for several months. :)

Do you have ZoneAlarm or an another firewall as this happened to me a few times and it was just that playing up, if you close it down and restart it, pages should display again.

Hey Kynoch I got a similar problem to you. Strange really we're both from Stockport and both on NTL. I'm on the 1mb setup though. I rang NTL and was informed the problem was IE6. Seems the NTL system doesn't like it. As there was no way of going back to IE5.5 without risking a complete screwup I decided to reformat the C drive and start again. I was due a reformat anyway so no real sweat. Result was no different. IE5.5 is just the same as IE6 for strange lockups. My problem is slightly different to yours in that mine just sits there saying "Detecting Proxy Settings" after a few mins it starts to run ok again but then stops and starts intermitantly. I found going into Internet Options/Connections/Lansettings and unchecking Automatically Detect settings worked for me. I still however get the occasional Page cannot be displayed error message or a slow download for no apparent reason. By any chance have you used a program called Express Assist to backup your favourite files and your e-mails. I have and am convinced thats thats the culprit. I'll reformat soon and this time I won't be restoring the backups until I've checked the system out completely. If the problem doesn't appear then I'll know that Express Assist is the problem. Downside of this is that my favourites file is HUGE, I've got about 150-200 sites bookmarked. No way I can write all those down in a book. I'm gonna try copying and pasting the fav file this time and seeing if it works. If you find a answer can you let me know, damn things driving me nuts.

Lets not forget that the vast majority of problems on the NTL Broadband service can be easily solved by specifying a static proxy server instead of the transparent proxy that the service uses by default.

I dont use that E-mail backup software, but i have copied my favourites folder once b4 when i did a format, and it works fine.
I had the 1meg connection last month, didnt really see a big improvement so i am just using the 512k over the summer, still get the occasional problem though, must admit it has settled down a little bit.

Interested in your suggestion Darren, unfortunately when it comes to the software side of Pc's I'm next to useless. Mustard on the hardware side though :D
Can you give me a idiots guide to how to se up this proxy server thing. I'd like to try it and see if theres any improvement.
