windows?... whats that?
im not trying to start anything,
Ross asked what version of *nix you use and craig answered windows. I simply said that windows isnt a version of *nix, unless big bill has had a change of heart since the last time i checked :)
but i'm trying to start something!
well as far as im concerned *nix is ok but its a bit of a ******* to learn how to use it and for someone like me who doesnt like really going to webbys teaching linux and read all the stuff, speaking of which anyone who can tel lme how to dual boot windows xp(or 2k) with mandrake 8.2 please come forward :)
as for windows i was raised on it and i have been using it for nigh on 9 years so im used to it but i see the potential for nix sadly its not as supported for games etc.

Install windows in a set partition, not filling the hard drive, then install mandrake. During the install you will be prompted to set up boot options, either using lilo or summat similar. Giving you a nice choices screen at startup. :)
blooming eck, something constructive comes from this thread
testing Lindows here :) looks like microsoft are gonner lose out once longhorn comes out.
also using mandrake 8.2 and Linux is not for geeks!..

Think ms might have the linux threat covered, imagine not being able to use the latest form of office without resorting to licence infringement.....

I haven't used it myself yet, but Gentoo looks pretty good, with gnome 2 or even KDE 3 on it would look quite good :D. It has an openBSD-style ports system, I think Geekster's checking it out at the moment.
Check out the Gentoo (http://www.gentoo.org)web page.
my web servers in the US are running RedHat 7.2; seems stable enough so far!

I've got Suse Linux 8.0 Pro on my spare PC, dual booted with Win9x or win2k, can't remember which.
Suse 8.0 is so much better looking than XP, and the install routine is great - interogates the gfx card and straight away you have a 1024*768 high-res installation screen and 16-bit colour - installation doesn't have to be ugly :p
I'm using Suse cos I started out at uni installing 7.1, then got a copy of 7.3 from the lecturer to try at home.
Then bought 8.0 from d*bs.com for only £45 - for which you get an MS Office 2K compatible productivity suite included, PS6 style graphics package called GIMP, loads of cool little games (Armagetron is so addictive..) and lots of utils spread across either 7cds or 1 dvd. It's a great package.
I plan to develop my future website on the linux box and use the built in apache with php4 support to test new feautures :D
I still have Win2K on my main PC, but only cos I need it for internet access (thru AOL, oh the shame! :o) and playing games.
Horses for courses.
grrrpop, a question to be answered if you please.
I'm interested in buying Suse 8 pro because of the amount of audio tools it comes with (which i assume are) ready to run. I don't know if you're interested in this kind of stuff but I'm curious to know if a prog called ardour runs out of the box cos I'm buggered if i can get any rpms of it (and it's list of dependancies as long as my arm) working.

Ok, I had to set up my spare PC to check this (at 1am!) but I found that the way I'd installed, which I assumed was a full install, ardour is not present. I managed to find it eventually within the add/remove programs and attempted to install it. Probably should mention I'm not too hot with linux yet..
I seem to have managed to hang the system, probably by closing the window when it hadn't quite finished yet - oops! :o
I'll let you know how it goes, probably tomorrow haha
And yes I am interested in multitrack recording software, but I wasn't aware any came with Suse 8.0 - doh! :o
UPDATE: literally as this posted the computer sorted itself out and it appears to have installed correctly.
"ardour 32/96 digital audio workstation"
Looks basic, but I'll have a dabble when I'm awake ;)

hey grrrpoop thanks for giving it a go :)
I'd be interested to know how it turns out, I'm always interested in checking out music software, I'm no musician but they're a lot of fun. Switching to linux things become a lot less clear, there are plenty of progs but you tend to need a lot more knowledge of linux then I currently possess to get them working.
I have been trying without much success to get a few things working with wine, I don't hold out much hope as most of them rely pretty heavily on directx and as far as I'm aware support in that area isn't that great other than for games.
Anyhow please give us a post on what ardour is like, I think there are a few soft synths included with suse as well if you fancy gving them a go (go on, you know you want to). :D
