Hey there!!

you'd be surprised how many companies still use Win95!!

I've been into loads of Small Business Enterprise places! and they are stuck on Windows95 and office 97! most of the PC's that they got all came with WinME and a few with XP but they had to be wiped to get Win95 on it!!!

Yep, I'll back that up. My company is still stuck in the IT backwaters. I have to make do with a Pentium 233 running 95. Not even a proper version of 95 either, a *******ised version that prevents users making any 'customisations'.

And we market ourselves to the public as a world leading Ship Classification Company. F****** joke!

Apparantly we have plans to upgrade to XP at the end of the year (with appropriate hardware) but I have my doubts.

:(

I'm afraid in the corporate world, that's known as common sense. After endless troubles with our clients b0rking up their computers, we now limit them so thay have no permissions to install programs of any kind or make any radical changes.

Also, a great many companies don't really have a need to run anything more advanced. For most people, all they need is word and email (possibly very simple networking support) and that's about it. Your needs may be different, but the great majority of peoples aren't. So the huge cost of upgrading can't be justified by management. Sad but true, but if it ain't broke...

I have to agree with this statement, and I think it'll be the same for a lot of companies.
Its always hard work for a IT guy to administer stuff like this. In an ideal world, (or a with a company with decent money) there would be all the pc's using one flavour of OS, and the IT guy would be administering everything from his server with no hassle.

Instead we've got to deal with all the flavours of OS and we've got to keep dragging the company, kicking and screaming, into the millenium. About 3 months ago I was still using a P200 with 80mb RAM and Windows 95 and I'm the Network Admin!
I've just managed to convince them to let me have a new laptop.
Though I was told it had to be under a grand, so I was limited to what I could get, but hey there's still a few out there.

Still using win95 and NT4 at my work with office 95 as standard.

I think that we are planning to upgrade to Win2000 and XP in probably 2005 for complete move over and are currently doing the active directory move.

Im running on a old 233Mhz Laptop with 64Mb RAM and 4GB hard disk and the new PCs that we are getting (P4 Compaq Evo SFF Desktops) wont run 95 so have to get the joy off NT4:rolleyes: :)

To extend the topic rather than to deviate, what os is everyone using at home, i'm currenly using win98se. I was using XP but i was having a lot of problems with my dsl usb modem and aa lot of teh programs were having problems.

I ask because since i have went back to win98se i have apreciated how good it is. I liked XP becuase it was aesthetically pleasing, but win98se i've found to be a lot more stable.

I prefer the stability anyday

I have XP at work, and office 97.... even tho we have office 2k, but one person decided he doesn't like 2k so we weren't allowed to install it

Using Win2k Pro at home - 4 months running now, and never had a single crash. So much more stable than 98. I will never install XP on my PC - it's nasty.

Currently using XP pro on main rig, 2k and ME on lappy.

I still think that ME is better than 98, but won't start that debate ;)

I still want to try 98lite, looks good and stable for a basic machine.

I use XP Pro on both Home pc and Laptop at work. I've never had a problem with it so far. XP Home I won't touch though, as I heard that there are problems with it.

When I had Win95 and 98, it always seemed to crash with a lovely blue screen......... Since I put XP pro on, I've never had that problem any more.

XPPro at home and work. TBH I wouldn't touch anything else now without good reason (excepting Linux). I upgraded from Win98 on 2 home PC's in December and since then the only BSOD's I've had are down me me getting ambitious with my overclocking. The kids PC hasn't crashed once in 6 months and seeing as my two are 8 & 13 it gets a lot of abuse and all sorts of c**p installed and unistalled. I just go defrag it once a month and tidy the HDD up a bit.

I've also found the hardware and driver support to be excellent in XP.

Have 98SE installed on an 'old' P3 500, had to really as I've loads of games that check the OS on install & no matter what I tried couldn't get them installed on my main XP box.

As far as WIndows goes, I use 2k exclusively at home and at work (alot of the work I do involves large scale OCR, so we have modern machines and stability is of prime importance).

For our work installs, we only do 2k and XP since the 9x series doesn't support domain logons and user/admin seperation properly, and we could never get NT4 to work with our software without an awful lot of non-portable rewriting.

As far as Linux goes, I've fallen in love with Debian stable for servers and am kinda hovering in between RedHat and Gentoo for workstations.

I use Win2k Pro at work and XP (Fisher-Price Windows) Pro at home, both running Office 2k.
To be honest I think I still prefer 2k to XP, as it seems to react much more quickly and reliably; if that makes any sense. However as I use my home PC for gaming, I find XP gives me much less trouble than 2k.
Oh and the drivers for my Joystick dont work in 2k :)

Our installs at work seem to vary, although they do have a standard Win2k build now. Even so, rogue Win95 machines crop up every now and again with problems.

at my work, we have WinNt 4. Which is ok, becuase we are linked up to our head office servers which is 200 miles away. Our PC's are not brill though are all AMD 500Mhz, 128MB RAM, 1GB HDD (due to us running everything from the servers)

The main annoying thing is though, the admin at our head office and stopped up from adjusting anything. Cant even adjust my clock, its out by 10mins which is sooooooooo annoying.

And we have to run our resolutions at 640x480. Thats the most annoying thing though.

Any ideas how i can bypass it??? when i try to go into it, a msg saying access denied, contact your administator for support

Problem is who-ever he is, lives 200miles away at cosy HQ. And i aint calling some strange guy. and he will say no anyway.

I've been using 98Lite (or LitePC as it's now called!) for years now!! I hartely recomend it if you want a stable Win9x,ME system with a small footprint (I had my WinME install down to 70Mb total when i first installed it :) booted in seconds and flew on my old 800Mhz celeron)!! I've been running a 98lite version of WimME for over 2 years now although i recently jumped to Win2003 server on my main PC. With the lite version i still had the odd crash every now and again but it was a lot more stable with all the junk i threw at it :)

FYI
they have just relesed a Beta of "LitePC" for Win2k and XP, I've not tried that one yet cause i'd Need a 2k or XP box to try it on :)
