okay, i recently formatted my boot drive, which is a 20gb WD drive, and formatted it into nfts and partitioned it into a 2gb partition for windows xp, and the rest for programs etc. Well the windows xp home installation goes without a hitch and installs fine onto the C: partition with no moans about space etc. Well I start adding extra profiles, and remember everything is stored into the 'documents + settings' folder on the windows drive, which in my case is the C: drive, which is now low on space. How can I (if i can) move the documents and settings folder onto my other partition (g: ) and have windows realise that i've done that? :D :D :D

why not use partition magic and make the C: partition larger?

because I dont have partition magic and would rather prefer to find a soloution to the problem rather than fixing it the 'boring' way, which would also be inconvenient.

All i did was to change the Target of the My Doc's shortcut on the start menu to point to a folder created on my L: partition.

However that dosnt move all the settings etc etc. So i would set the C: partition to 5gb that will then give you some leway

download tweakui powertoy from microsoft site. It lets you change target folders and a whole lot of other stuff, very useful :)

This won't get round the core of the problem though. Basically, your C partition is too small. Yeah, you can use things like tweakui to change target folders, but I've come across plenty of apps that will only install properly on C (and even if they don't, they dump a load of stuff there).

Besides, there isn't an awful lot if benefit from installing progs on a seperate partition anyway. As soon as C gets nuked, your programs won't run because your registry and all your dll's etc etc won't be there any more.

Quickest answer is just to buy PM and resize C to a decent size (mine is 8 GB, and I have about 3 GB left). All my non-program data (email, config files, general docs and crap) is kept on different partitions which are definitely NOT named "My Documents". Argh.

Believe me, I've tried cutting down C to minimum size, but it really is stupidly difficult and not really worth the effort. Simpler just to reinstall all the apps when C gets nuked and just drop in all the old config files (the ones you can't remove from C), which you should backup regularly (or use Linux to hook them out if Windows won't boot).

Surely if you lose the C drive - you lose the other partitions as well if it's a hardware fault ? The only way you won't is if you are using a 2nd hard disk.

Nobody gonna answer his question? Yes you can move the My Documents to another drive. Open its property sheet and relocate the folder. It will ask if you want to copy the existing documents to the new location, click yes. Space saved.

[edit] You don't need any power tools to move the My Documents folder within Windows XP.

That would just move the my documents folder not the documents and settings folder.

There is a tool in the admin pack which allows you to fully customise your setting and it allows you to set up where you want settings, program file etc to go to. I can't remember the name but i will go through them and tell you which it is, once i foind it.
