I am the owner of a pukka version of WinXP upgrade version which I used to upgrade from Win98 which was the upgrade version from the full win95.

With me so far?

A little while ago I was having a life laundry session and decided that I would no longer be needing the win95 disk, so in the bin it went.

I didn't realise the foolishness of this until it was too late.

Question. What happens if I want to reformat my hard drive (something I do every now and then). I wont be able to reinstall win98 because I no longer have the win95 disk it will no doubt ask for. I have a win98 boot disk but XP wont install from a DOS session.

Tell me the truth. I'm b*gg*r*d aren't I.

Buy a valid w98 disk. Only £5-10

you upgraded to WIn98 from Win95, and have since thrown the WIn95 "disk" in the bin... so you should still have the Win98 CD... which is all you need for upgrading to WinXP?

By "disk" - do you really mean 'disC' - as in CD, or R U on about a floppy  You definitely need a previous OS CD to perform an upgrade install, so if ye ain't got one, borrow one until ye can get hold of a legit CD yerself.

The scenario is that I have a hard drive with no OS because I have formatted it. I would be able to boot to a DOS session because I have a 98 boot disc. I would not be able to reinstall 98 because it would search for the 95 cab files which I no longer have. I would not be able to install XP because it will not install from a DOS session.

I suppose the solution in the short-term would be not to format. In the longer term I would have to purchase a full version of either 98 or XP.

The moral of the story is "Think things through."

Umm - put the XP Disc in the drive, yes thats right. Have the computer boot from the XP disc - TAA DAA. Half way through installation it'll ask for your win 98 cd to prove you have a previous copy of windows.

but if the 98 is an update, doesn't it then ask for the previous disk?

Much anger in this one.

You are young... but... you will learn.
