View Full Version : P2P Software
Hi All
I normally use Kazaa for all my downloads, but lately its been so crap and slow. So I am beginning to think I need a new bit of software to get my downloads up and running again, so can anyone suggest anything, that is dead easy to use, and is fairly quick, and also has a pile of stuff to download?
Cheers

Two others which get good write-ups are WinMX (http://www.winmx.com/) + E-Donkey (http://www.edonkey2000.com/) ;)
I can't speak for either tho', since I don't use this type of prog' (brolly :D)
Direct Connect looks good, but theres no large group of people to download from - you connect to what they call "hubs" to download shared files. I don't like it, but I know a few people who swear by it.

Yeah i have used Direct Connect but i dont like it either, mainly cus you only d/l the file from a single user so you will only get a good rate (50k+) if you connect to users with T1/T3 - This also means that if they cancle the D/L its very rare you will be able to resume it with somone else.
I use KaZaA Lite and somtimes Imesh

I use the same combo as Fragalot.
WinMX, eDonkey2000 (with the eDonkey bot...makes it miles faster) and my mate uses BearShare, never tried it meself but he seems to like it.

Use Kazaa lite* , Kazaa normal version has evil gremlins (Spyware), Nasty stuff!
For mp3's Kazza is the way to go but if your looking for something over 100mb.. Then e-donkey is the way to go, search for a program called emule, it uses the edonkey network and is generally faster at finding download scores.

I use Direct Connect but do not use their client as it is very poor (to put it nicely). DC++ is a much better client allowing you to multihub as well as other things.
DC(++) comes into it's own if you queue up multiple files at the same time. Multiple rar files for example from different users, one leaves and it continues from another. I can quite happily fill my bandwidth using DC(++). Integrity of the files is usually better too. If I choose to download Monty Python I don't get a copy of Starwars cos someone renamed the files.
I sometime use iMesh but find the content to be quite limited. Good for music though.
Hated edonkey. Kept getting left after 4 days with a file missing one small chunk in the middle and 20 users online who are also missing exactly the same part. Also didnt like the way it allocated disk space for queued downloads even if it couldn't get parts of the file. Queue a couple of movies and that is 2.5Gb gone with nothing to show for it untill the downloads have finished. Queue up as many files as you like with DC(++) and you only use the space as the file is downloaded.
Cheers

DC++ is the best by far its a spin off of direct connect but its by far the best. :)

Overnet (www.overnet.com) is the way to go. Simple and a HUGE network. Que-based though ;(

ive been using the bittorrent client :)
and its very speedy
I've got the Kazaa Lite 2.1.0 K++ edition and it's ace. It's got unlimited searches, default "K-Lite Master" participation level, and obviously no nasty spyware.
Well worth an upgrade if you're using any other version of Kazaa lite...

ill give it a go :)
Usually I am using a combo of
Kazaa Lite 2.1 K++ 2.03
E-Mule
WinMX
+ IRC
K++ is the most reliable and quickest downloads of the lot, plus you can find rare stuff on there, downloading Ulysses 31 at the moment. It is quite slow to new stuff tho and suffers from American idiocy.
E-Mule I have a problem with because everything takes weeks to download, in part due to it not liking my router (it says port 4662 not accessible assigning LOW ID). Is good for getting Andromeda and John Doe eps. Rarely get a dud file.
WinMX is well another client lol, reasonable.
IRC is the quickest to get new stuff tho, but not in the same league as one of the private FTP servers that is the backbone of the rip pool.
Is your cable modem on NTL? If it makes any difference to you NTL have started throttling bandwidth for Kazaa users. My 600Kb connection drops to 110Kb or less when I turn Kazaa on. I have to reboot my modem to get it back which then gives me a new IP address which screws up my SetiQueue/SetiDriver comms.
I'm going to Pipex as soon as I've moved house, as far as I'm aware they don't throttle, they reply to your emails and don't keep you waiting on the phone for ¾ hour at national rate when you finally give up on an email reply.
BTW are you using 'Kazaacydoor.exe'? It removes the Cydoor advertising/spyware part of Kazaa.
NTL havent limited Kazaa users for bandwidth i still use it for the odd thing, and so do alot of my mates and we dont have any problems with bandwidth being reduced.
Just download Kazaalite from www.kazaalite.com to get the adware free one.
Strange, they actually admitted it to me both on the phone and in person via the salesman who tried to 'resell' it to me last week.
Go here http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp after running Kazaa and see if your connection is what you expect.
.....hmmm, perhaps I stand corrected - I just tested a short download and nothing changed. I'll check again sometime with a big one.
I dont believe anything im ever told over the phone from them, most of the peeps on the phone just repeat what they are told and personally dont know jack.

I hate the layout of WinMX and I'm not too fond of BearShare. KaZaa Lite all the way
Kazaa and kazaa lite is for Noobie downloaders though really, lots of fake stuff and virus infected things on it.
Better off using Overnet and look for software etc with tags from well known distro groups, also newsgroups are alot better.

Noobie downloaders? What the hell? Its downloading for christs sake, why go over to a more complex and longwinded system of filesharing just to avoid beeing called a n00b? If it ain't broke, don't fix it :)
Use Kazzaa Lite meself, happy out.

I'm on Kazza Lite too!
I've also tried a prog called Shareaza, it's not the greatest! keeps crashing every so often but it serches both eDonkey and Gnutella P2P servers. so you get a good chance of getting your file.
Kazaa lite and irc for me

I use a combination of Win MX for mp3's and Kazaa Lite for most other stuff. Direct Connect is good, as long as you find a server that'll let you on... :)
DC++ is very good since its an improved ver of the original DC..
My Broadband connection swears by it :p
