hi
can anyone suggest a remedy for my mates pc,he had windows me before but has upgraded to xp pro but his pc wont shut down anymore,it leaves the old 95 type message .....its safe to turn off your computer now,but still wont switch off unless its turned off with the switch at the rear of his pc cheers
sounds like acpi is not enabled in the bios
enable ACPI and reinstall
;)
Did he upgrade over the top or format and do a fresh install?
I had a lots of problems with OS upgrades particulalry XP. The best way is to install it fresh...
I have also had XP not shutting down, unless I went into task manager and stoped a few processes. I never worked out what it was, but there is a function in system tools to return to a previoous time when it was working and that solved it!

If ACPI is not enabled, check under POwer properties (through Display settings & then Power options under the Screensaver tab) and enable 'Use APM' if the option is there.
If not, then you could always change the driver for the device listed under 'Computer' in Device Manager, to ACPI PC.
