Okay, out of these two operating systems (Windows 2k Professional and Windows XP Professional) which one would you recommend for a gaming/lan computer? theres only a few pounds difference between them so i'm wondering which one i should choose. I've never used either so i need some advice, preferably from someone who has experience with both. Any help appreciated :D

I've used both and they both have their good and bad points.

2K...very stable (been out a while and most things have been fixed). Can be a bit of a nitemare to navigate around, esp if you are used to 95, 98, ME. It will be EOS when MS get XP server sorted maybe in 6-12mths.

XP....not so stable...SP1 has fixed at lot of probs. Easy to navigate..choose 2K style view or 9X. Will def have a longer lifespan.

My server in House is W2K (coz its only MS server platform with active dir)...all my PCs are XP (apart from PII 300 which has ME)

I personally would go for XP (waits for the angry mob to lynch me :D ) Its not perfect but it has got plenty of future.

IggyMF, Love the gif!!!

How did you create that? is there some prog. you can get to do that and others??

Also in response to question, I am now using XP Pro, have used XP Home as well, XP Pro better for running a server if using for LAN alot, good stability, and easy to use, I know there are alot of MS haters out there but XP is the bet OS they have done so far
:D

TTFN........

As far as I am aware XP Pro has greater control for connecting to servers, assigning rights for access etc and Home is the same OS but less 'Pro' options, all built on same code etc.. I have never had any issues with XP Home or Pro and I have been using since its launch, just make sure you have all the latest drivers though, otherwise ok.

TTFN....... :)

P.S Thanks IggyMF, I shall explore that later
:)

Ok the difs are:

Home has no:
Remote Desktop
Multi-processor support
Automated System Recovery (ASR)
Dynamic Disk Support
Internet Information Services/Personal Web Server
Encrypting File System
File-level access control
"C2" certification
Domain membership
Roaming profiles
IntelliMirror
Group Policy
Multi-language support
The user interface for IPSecurity
SNMP
Simple TCP/IP services
Client-side caching
Administrative Tools

...and a few more :D

Pro is just as stable as Home, if you want to know what any of the above mean , let me know.

Iggy, Home does have Administrative Tools, as it does have Multi-Language support.

IggyMF

Yeah...but the admin tools are a subset of what avial on Pro and you cant switch between languages in the Home edition you have to reconfig (reboot).
