the ISP disconnecting after 2hrs, there arn't many more annoying things in life than this happening while downloading, yes i have a 56k modem still (stop laughin!)
is there a way to stop it??
thanks.
its not at your end, if youve got an ISP like BT, Freeserve etc. They are responsible for disconnecting you. Its part of their policy to stop overuse :)
If your using a 3rd party programme for dloading, then you may be able to set it to re-dial up after disconnection and continue the download.

Hey there!
I'm in the same boat as you Grabbi
i usually just use a download manager that'll resume a interupted download! but i have an emergancy "Pay as you go" connection (local rate + 1p) that i can keep active for as long as needed! Got my copy of Lindows that way! you'll either wait 10-15 days and play p&p from USA and get it by post or download the thing, so I decided to download it at a blisteringly slow 50,667bps over my analog modem! :) only took a few day's with the odd disconnection to play games on-line! no time at all!! :)
Its a darn cheek is what it is, as previously said, its your ISP auto disconnecting you! I remember those days, if you're paying for evening and weekends, then you shouldn't have any time limit on usage, its in the small print, but its still a darn cheek. Someone should write to watchdog :)
I got a 1m blueyonder modem now, its quite pricey, but its worth every penny, I'll never go back! BT are doing quite a cheap plug and play option for ADSL at the moment I think! Its USB so not as fast as a network card, but still a lot better than 56k!
And NTL are doing a 128k cable modem for the price of bt anytime NTL 128k line (http://www.ntl.com/locales/gb/en/home/broadband/cost/)
Worth a look..
The USB version of ADSL is just as fast as the PCI NIC connection.
The connection speed will never go above 10mb/s so why will the type of interface into the computer affect the connection speeds?
The NTL 128k broadband only works out cheap if you already have NTL cable TV to start with, coz all you do then is add the £14.99 to the top of the normal bill.
If you dont already have NTL Cable TV, you will have to pay for there basic TV package as a minimum and then pay the box rental on top of that, and any installation fees.
In the long run it does work out cheaper to have NTL Broadband but if you are not going to have it for long or maybe moving house BT will be cheaper because you can take the modem and filters with you when you move, whereas the cable box stays NTL's property.
Kynoch: Well I had my cable modem on usb, and was advised by blueyonder tech support a couple of times that it wouldn't be as fast....Is the only reason that I mention it! My friend just got the plug and play, I installed it for her, very straight foward, and she is very happy with it.
Although I have heard rumours that BT ADSL has a lot of service problems..But I think thats broadband in general, blueyonder goes down every couple of months. But on the whole I have found it very good, and the tech support is very good as well (24 hour)..
Over the USB NIC, i didnt mean to sound as though a was forcing the fact that the statement was wrong. Apology on my side, drink in its finest form..
NTL also have a brilliant service for there Broadband, i havent had down time for ages.
There helplines arent open 24/7 though.
don't mention it :) I didnt take offence, but I am aware I am not tech genius...
Most of the time I am asking questions, its nice to occationally feel that I am returning the favour :p
Were all still learning, and noone is perfect we all make mistakes, especially big companies, only coz they usually have numbskulls working for them.
Yes I have worked for a few companies and found myself explaining how to do things to the it manager :D

have you overclocked your HDD mate? never seen 7500RPM before !
lol, I wish that was possible.
If that could be done imagine if you made it go too fast so that the disks came off the spindles, and richoched around in your case.

have u ever seen a 7500RPM HDD before or is it SCSI?
Thought SCSI was 10000rpm and 12000rpm?
Or are you on about an older model?

Ok SCSI is 10000RPM or 12000RPM then, so how is his 7500RPM? or is it a typo
7200 rpm is a standard speed for IDE ATA100/133 HDD, looks like a typo! :D
