Ok,

So I'm after a ceramic white PSP, but I've heard Sony have done something dodgy with the new firmware so you can't play homebrew apps on it?

Anyone a PSP expert, as I'm a total noobie,

I'm no expert but the latest firmware doesn't allow certain type of homebrew apps to be run. There are forums around which will have much more accurate information.

To run legit homebrew you need firmware 2.0 or earlier. anything else and it wont do it.

There are a number of things on the new firmwares that arent on the old ones though.

can you not 'downgrade' the firmware?

The only firmware that can be downgraded is 2.0 to 1.5
this is done with a bit of software that tricks the PSP to letting it happen.

this is non legit btw.

A lot of newer games force to upgrade to play. I'm not bothered about homebrew tbh.

presumably you'll eventually be able to play homebrew games on the new firmware?

1.5 can run all the homebrew.
2.0 can be downgraded to 1.5.
2.0 - 2.6 can run some homebrew with the help of an eLoader program.
2.7 can't run any homebrew.

http://pspupdates.qj.net/ is a good site for homebrew and more information.

My PSP is on 1.5 and is staying there until a good game comes out that forces me to upgrade (GTA needs 2.0 but I finished it then downgraded). All the features of the new firmwares have already been done by a homebrew app, its almost like Sony is playing catch up with the homebrew developers!

Brilliant - Thanks for that Matty! :)

It's all a bit new to me to be honest...I'm currenty trying to buy a White Value pack which has the 1.5 firmware - It is quite diccicult to say the least! :(

I don't know anything about homebrew but I take it that its software/games that anyone can make and be played on the PSP? Also is it possible to play old PS1 games on the PSP?

Yeah homebrew is just home written software, but Sony hasn't given it the digital rights. This is half the reason for the new firmwares, to stop the unofficial software working. I guess it reduces their profits if people aren't buying the games and are just running a SNES emulator off it.

When version 3 (I think) firmware comes out, it will include a PS1 emulator which you'll be able to buy games for to play off the memory stick. It probably won't come out until the end of the year though.

Thanks for the info. The PS1 emulator sounds very appealing! :D
