Basically, you need to narrow it down some. Right now it could be just about anything.

If you have any spares lying about (preferably known to be working...) then chuck them in, replaceing possibly duff parts.

Also, try booting with only 1 ram stick.

I'd disconnect everything apart from the graphics card and 1 stick of RAM and post up. See what happens. If its ok, add things one at a time and if it stops working, theres your problem. remove that item and try and find a replacement.

If it never posts with anything attached, then it might be an idea to check your CPU for bent pins etc. Also it might be an idea to try a different graphics card if possible.

But yeah, more detail please :)

mobo abit an7 400 mhz fsb, 2gig kingston 400 mhz ram, 2.0 athlon (barton) 2900, vodoo 3 video card, 300 w powersupply.

i tried to boot with no componets, post code 87 (check cpu core voltage)
but there is two post code 87 the other says (net pc: build sysid structure). how do i know which one it is.
tried just cpu same outcome. either 99, 87, 5 post code.

could it be the mobo? first cpu i tried had a good chance it was overclocked to much and died from friends sys. could it have damaged mobo?

should i completely remove the ide cables from hdd or just power cables?

You could remove either, it won't make a difference which you remove
