View Full Version : CPU Usage ridiculously high
I had another thread on here but I cant find it lol.
Basically my audio stutters and slurs when I run bitcomet or limewire. but only when the programs are downloading to the HDD.
I recently swapped my pc case over but that is about it. I was told to reformat and I have but (though the sound is a little better) the sound still doesnt run properley.
Anyway yesterday I noticed something pretty strange, whenever I open winrar or a web page etc my CPU usage jumps up to 60-70%.
My computer never used to do this and I could run every program under the sun before it started to faulter, so why is it doing it after changing the casing?
Here are my specs:
P4 3.0ghz
2 HDD: 1-40gb 2-140gb
1 gb DDR ram
I dont know what else you want to know really.
I run norton internet security as well, but like I said before I changed my case all was good so I cant see that being a real problem.
Thanks in advance.

Could try setting the process that uses your cpu to low and see if the sounds any better. Aslo, what are you using , a soundcard or onboard sound?
Could also just do a few spyware/adaware/virus scans with a few different programs just to be sure its not virus related :)

Is your music files on the same HDD... if so.. then thats just normal as not everything/every application can access the same hard drive at the same time.
With regards to CPU usage... one way is to access the Task Manager (control, alt and delete) and click on the processes. On that screen find out which application is taking up the most cpu usage and end it.... or type in 'msconfig' in Run and delete all unneccesary procceses there... bearing in mind, click the 'hide microsoft apps... )
Edit: Also try Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html) for spyware taking up CPU usage.
I used spybot and its saying everything is ok. As regards to the CPU usage, its saying that the system idle process is cpu 95 and when i get the cpu spike, winamp goes nuts, but again I used winamp before and it was ok with bitcomet. To be sure i tested it with windows media player and again it spiked.
One thing i checked was the IDE and one device is running ultra DMA and the other is running PIO, problem is i have checked out how to fix this and none of them work, I have changed the registry, nothing, reformated windows, nothing, changed the drop down box, nothing.

It isn't Norton taking over your system is it?
If I were you I'd uninstall Norton and use Avast instead...with Zone Alarm for a firwall
Norton was doing the same thing on a mate's PC until I uninstalled it and now its fine :)

Yes - Norton has that problem...of eating all your physical memory and CPU usage... I hate the anti-virus myself but I can only here good things about its Ghosting software.
Anywho - If you have only resontly formatted your C:\ and D:\ - (Presuming that is what you have called your second HDD - unless there stripped then they will both be C:\) Then I doubt very much its a viral problem, unless of course you backed up the virus with your data and re-installed it onto your clean system :D . Use NOD32 or Kaspersky's online checking thing or download the 30day trial. Better still, buy one.
As for audio - the one thing I would recommend is boot up your comp, open task manager and monitor which programs use X ammount of CPU usage - just watch it for a minute or so when you boot - then try running each piece of software and see if there are any huge flux's in the CPU?
Other than a program running to high, or that shouldn't be running at all I am out of ideas?!
Yeah Norton is really p**sing me off now, it keeps crashing and not showing alerts when it should, so what are are the good alternatives???

Zone Alarm Pro for the Firewall and NOD32 for the Anti-Virus :)
alternatively Avast! and AVG are fantastic anti virus tools :)
