View Full Version : always havin to defragment, Advise please
Can you help. I just got my pc back from the repair shop. it kept freezing in games and 3dmark2005. i was told the cpu was faulty, so under warrenty got a replacement. new graphics card had been fitted to. i have got pc back and all it has on it is windows xp and power dvd. i just installed F.E.A.R and went to look at defragment screen. fear had scattered all over the place and it recomended that i defrag, so i did. after that i installed cod2 and it done the same thing. scattered all over and i was recomended to defragment again. this can't be right surely. do you think my harddrive is faulty also. in fear the game still stutters in places and sounds like the hardrive is trying to catch up . the harddrive is a 74gb raptor, f57 cpu and a 7800gtx graph card i also have 1gb of twin X memory.
thank you for your time

That is one damn powerful spec - but you shouldn't have to defrag after every install - hell you should have to do it every 6 months or so at the most, just to sort things out.
It sounds like your raptor is cream-crackered - Presuming it is still underwarrently, back up your files and send it back - but I gotta say, with your CPU & your HDD at fault in the same system, and close to one another in time, your one unlucky guy! :p
yeah its still under warrenty with the guys who built it. i will drop it back into them. might pay the extra and get 150gb raptor + another gig of ram. treat myself after all the grief ive been through. cheers
Files get fragmented through use, it's just normal Windows behaviour :(
yeah i know that..but if its all clean , then i add one program surely it should not turn all red and tell me to defrag this volume.
Most installers put files into the temp directory during the install process before moving them to there final destination, after installation they get removed thus leaving gaps.

You reckon? I defrag my HDD's about once a month on average!
Why? I don't leave defragging my HDD's until it's a 'necessity'.
Regular defragging helps to make sure they stay running as quickly and as smoothly as possible - despite however many programs I install +/or unimstall ;)

Well - I would say for the average user? Ok - that is not an average spec - its high end, but I only do mine between every 2 - 4 months. I usually only use the software I have:
Photoshop,
Microsoft Word,
Nero,
Anti-virus and firewall.
And the occassional game - not much comes and goes through my system, installation file wise. I use my comp a lot, but rarely get around to installing new hardware - work takes up too much time.
