This 'Greatest Hits' album contains 14 songs and although there are notable exceptions (Breed) it is a great album from a band that was probably the most influential of its generation. What they would have achieved, but for the suicide of singer and songwriter Kurt Cobain, we can only wonder. 9/10

It's a bit of a twisted thing to say, and I do like Nirvana, but if Nirvana didn't end, Foo Fighters may never have happened - and I've been into them right from when they started, and think far more of the Foo's.

I'm not trying to say Cobain ending his life is a good thing though, so don't take it as an anti-Kurt statement :)

And don't forget Garbage. They would be in the same boat.

Nirvana were a great band, and I agree with GTI about their influence.

You know, I still have a ticket for the Nirvana gig they were scheduled to play in Glasgow, but was cancelled after Kurt's suicide.

On a slightly more wierd note, every time I hear Smells Like Tean Spirit I feel physically sick. I can't listen to it now, but when it came out i LOVED it.

I've said this before, and I always get shouted at.

Much as I love some Nirvana, they aren't that influential. They influenced grunge, and they still serve as a beacon for a certain subgroup (of whih I'm a member) this suggests that they've not influenced anybody good enough to replace them as beacon. Bit sad really.

Next! If Kurt hadn't killed himself, nobody would give a damn now. His suicide was the greatest and most endurging bit of PR since JFK was shot. If JFK hadn't been killed, everybody would have ended up hating him. If Kurt hadn't splattered his brains all over the walls, everybody would have got bored of Nirvana. Sad but true. Just look at any band that goes on too long and tell me 99% of bands don't get worse in the end.

Oh, and the 'new' Nirvana single sounds like Puddle of Mudd, which to be honest, says it all.

Gotta agree with you Graeme. I liked Nirvana as much as anyone else but I think the only real thing they gave to music was Dave Grohl. I get a bit fed up with all the "most influential band ever" stuff and I really dont think Kurt Cobain was "the voice of a generation". Just me opinion before the flaming starts.

Oh yeh, Garbage - they're great too :)

Damn right, even Cobain admitted their trademark song 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was a 'rip-off of a song from The Pixies' !! :)

Better watch, this is turning into a Nirvana slag, which is not the intention of this thread. To reinstate, I really do like them, just feel they are still overhyped a little

A little overhyped? Pffffffffff

Sorry, I'll just also point out again that I do actually like Nirvana, and its a rare day when I won't get down to Smells Like Teen spirit when I'm out clubbing :)

Hmmmmm.....

Next! If Kurt hadn't killed himself, nobody would give a damn now.

Now I don't claim to be the biggest Nirvana fan on the planet, but to say they only reached where they are because Kurt Cobain died is (IMHO) nonsense. Look at where they were before he died? It's a bit like saying Hendrix was an average guitarist made legendary by his own vomit-induced death!

RANT RANT RANT. GRUMBLE MOAN.

/me goes off to sit in a corner to calm down.

No, Hendrix was the divine made flesh.

Kurt was a pretty pin-up boy. :D

I'm serious though, killing yourself always seals a future for your work - Especially if your line of work happens to be all dark and miserable. I give you Sylvia Plath as an additional example.

Mind you, she would have gone on to write much better stuff if she'd lived..

I saw Nirvana around 1990-1. It was at (IIRC) Powerhouse in London and I think they were supporting Mudhoney. Kurt spent most of their set just wobbling around on stage and breaking strings left right and centre. I really wasnt impressed with them. To be fair though, they did get it together in the couple of years after that (when they got successful in other words) and did come up with some great songs but I still stand by my earlier comment about Dave Grohl being by far the best thing about them.

I do realise puddle of mudd sound like derivate third rate Nirvana.

Hence the comment regarding the 'new' Nirvana song.
