pc breakdown

Hi all

My pc slowly but surely started to go slow. Eventually i would start it up, it would get to the Windows xp screen and restart. I ran a test on the IBM hard drive and it reported errors. I replaced the hard drive like for like and tried to start the PC. It woudn't get past the post and the monitor button went from green to orange and stayed there. I have tried different RAM, Graphics Card and power supply, unplugged the floppy and the DVD writer but still the same problem.
Can anyone please help.

Hey there,

Can you give us full specs of the system that you are running for a start. Do you run disk defrag / scandisk / virus scanner to keep it all clean??

Yes it is kept clean. I have Kaspersky Anti Virus which is kept up to date.
The spec is Athlon 1.2, Elite K7S5A Motherboard, 256mb DDR RAM, ATi Rage Pro Graphics. 80gb HDD, NEC DVD Writer, Windows XP Home.

Since you've swapped-out everything else in the system... I'd suspct there's a problem with the motherboard?

Haha, sorry i shouldn't laugh - K7S5A - dodgy! i have replaced countless numbers of these boards so to me thats the highest suspect, especially since you've swapped everything else.

Socket A mobos are cheap these days - i have an Asus A7V600-X which i like very much, improves over yours with USB2 (and lots of), SATA, 8x AGP and of course all your existing stuff will work in it.

Swapped the Motherboard and Hey Presto everything is fine. Although the hard drive is still no good.

I dont trust IBM hard drives (bad experience). you might as well get a new drive for OS use such as a Western Digital or Seagate. << very reliable IMO. You can then set the IBM drive as a slve if you wanted for the extra storage space.

I remember the IMB Deathstars well...had 2 of them die on me within a week.
