Im a maxtor fan, iv never had a problem (except over heating) iv always used maxtor and always bought it when builing others comps, same as i have always bought kingston ram there a good make, never had problems, well known, reasonably priced, reliable, and come with a years manufactures gaurentte so maxtor and kingstom are very simular.

I am not one that is fussy about hard drives.
My machine at moment has an IBM, 2x Maxtor and Samsung in it at moment.

Doesn't really make a difference what make drives you have! As long as they work! Does if you want Raid though!

Maxtor have been struggling over the two years with pricing in the HD market being pretty cutthroat, only briefly making it into profit.

Seagate are just killing two birds with one stone - Gaining some tech / distribution / factories cheap, and eliminating a competitor.

P.S - To be honest, I've never really understood Maxtor drives. They dont make bad products, they just dont make ones that stand out from the rest either

If you want:
Performance - You tend to go West Dig
Silence - Samsung
Cost - Hitachi / IBM

see? :(

All drives are fairly equal as far as im concerned, used everything from Connor, Seagate, Maxtor to other random makes and never had a problem with any of them.

Mine died :( . i have a seagate (7 year old mediadisk 8gb) that still works) and i have replaced the WD with a maxtor. I dont care about what hard drive i use i just happened to have these in other machines when i needed them. (i rip some apart for useful parts).

I am going to use samsung for silence.

wow thats a big why, didn't know maxtor we losing money. hopfuly we should benifit from the merger.

Me too, I've use multiple HD's and never had any problem with cooling, noise or anything. I also haven't kept one for longer then three or four years, so maybe I,ve been lucky I don't know?

I've got a Hitachi 8Gb drive that must be close to 7 years old (if not more). Still going strong!

No I don't use IDE drives at all now. Way too slow...

Wait a moment, you actually see a diferance in speed between IDE and SATA?!?!?!

Euphoria
26-12-2005, 20:31
Yeh there is an improvment with SATA I think. Definatelly notice the difference between a normal IDE drive and Raptors!

TheFallenAngel
27-12-2005, 00:34
I had raptors in raid 0 at one point, it was a waste of time.
I use sata drives now exclusively as it allows me to free my IDE channels for optical drives but other than that I don't see a difference between IDE and SATA hdds. The theoretical bandwith may be there but the hardware is far behind.

Euphoria

I've got Raptors running in raid 0 and nothing comes close with IDE...

i was more hinting at the idea of a 2 similar spec HDD's but one in SATA and IDE, i have a Sata HDD and several IDE HDDs and i cant "Notice" a diferance tbh.

I liked the smaller cable which is one reason why I opted for twin sata drives :p Shame the cables break so easily though

The Western Digital sata/power bracket is the best ive seen so far.

That is one problem but as TheFallenAngel said the new WD cables are ace!

Ye its a pity its proprietary. Although has anyone had any success with other drives?

I know little about hard drive makes and how they compare. However, my friend always use to say W.D. were the worst ones. This was about 5-6 years ago I guess. Was there any truth in what he said? It seems unlikely reading what you guys write about them. Unless they have improved dramatically?!

slartiBardfarst

they have never been 'bad' drives, maybe they weren't always fantastic but never terrible. these days they are pretty much the standard other manufacturers must reach in terms of speed.

traditionally, if a manufacturer makes a bad series of drives more than once they tend not to make drives ever again. (ibm, quantum, fujitsu desktop drives)

wd drives are top notch!!

I had a fujitsu drive once, in my dumb days! Piece of **** it was! At my old job we had a 1 gig quantum hard drive knocking around lol.

I went right off maxtor when they went through a huge batch of dodgy 30Gb ones a few years ago

Where i worked we replaced probably over a hundred of them....

My old PC had a 40GB Maxtor, not particularly fast, but then it was an IDE drive and also an old one. Not that noisy either, although my Seagate is quieter (and faster)

I bought 2 Maxtor 80GB drives in a row (performance winners in reviews), they both died. 3 of my friends have had the same experience. I've lost confidence. The only drive that exceeds expectation is my Raptor - reliable and unbelievably fast. :)
