View Full Version : HL2 - Lost Coast
any one tried it yet? Min Sys reqs are high!
I finished it just now. Very high quality and lots of fun, though a little short (but what does one expect from just one map anyway). The HDR looks great, although that's already been showcased in DoD: Source.

I have heard it is very good looking, but very small, people finishin it in 10 minutes - apparently though it had director commentry and stuff.

Wow, that IS short. Pretty enough - what was I looking for that was supposed to be so spectacular then?! Have to re-play it with commentary I guess.

seems to lock up on mine :( , can play for a bit then locks.
maybe because my cpu falls under min spec?
comes up with nv4 display driver error , maybe its those new drivers i got for fear?

Maybe Visuals like this? -

The lighting in the church also looks sweet, its basically a tech demo, that's all.
Updating 93%, hope this gives my x850xt a run for its money.
That WAS quick, quite fun though. Graphics were beautiful, even my old man was impressed!
Just played it through, granted it was short but it was quite enjoyable and it did look really quite good!
NUK_SU_KOW: I doubt its your cpu coming under the spec (unless its waaay under) cos my cpu is 2Ghz and it ran really well on mine at 1024x768 with everything on full.

my cpu is a amd 64 3800 x2 which runs at 2ghz , i doubt it is that as well as it runs fine for a bit then locks up with the sound on an annoying loop.
really wanna see it all the way through!

Those screenies are pretty much the same as mine. i run with everything on at 1280 x 1024 and it looks lovely and there s no slow down.
the level is short and its buggy as well. I've got loads of screenies where the men and the headcrabs are all in stasis (you know with the arms out in mid air) so its needs a little work to get right - wonder if they'll update it. also the bunny hopper on mine was insane - just tried to ram me rather than shoot me ???
DOD had HDR inbuilt but it was not strictly everything HDR - the Lost coast is 'pure' HDR.
I am gutted as I am going to have to wait to see this in it's full glory due to a possessed graphics card which decided to send itself to graphics card hell by cooking itself, thus rendering an entire SN25P useless.

It was fun. Nice little level. Church scrap was great. Nice showcase of hdr.

waft.. that looked very nice, prob the most complicated thing my pc has rendered :p .... it did it pretty well tho... got a bit of artifacting cause the overclock on the gfx card fairly bumps up the temp but the zalman cooler is on order :D
Just finished playing with the commentry on.. Very interesting and looks great.
I just have to say though.. 9800pro 128mb. Had it on 1024*768 Max everything. Looks great, fast FPS and amazing lighting... IMO Shows just how sloppy the programing in FEAR is.

lol
my setup .. with full EVERYTHING.. ran around 25~40 fps...
that 8x aa 16x af... 1280x960
VERY impressed, looked beautiful.. commentary was nice :) mr gaben can have an e-mail lol.
Fear isn't sloppy programming at all, they just thought they'd aim higher than giving the engine a kick in the ass and make everyone expect their previous gen cards to run it maxed out... the original beta was FAR better optimized for the higher end cards..
now they've tamed it(for people like you :P) and it doesn't run anywhere near as fast.. BUT it does on lower end cards... which tbh is a bit pish.
i ran fear fine on a 9800.. you can't expect it to run maxed out? 9800's are aging now you can't expect games designers to make games for last gen cards all the time. we'd get nowhere then would we :(
still it impressed me alot, considering how long it took it is a little short but it's a tech demo.. now if valve stick to "all new releases will have HDR" aftermath should be something of an amazing game to play :) that i truly look forward to :D

Agreed. But to wait forever and a day for the next release is what drives me insane.
yea, but ya know how valve work... they set out so they dont have deadlines.. but i think it pays off :) worthit in the end.. and i still dont think the source engine is at it's full potential.. we shall have to wait and see me thinks
I love the glitches that you can suffer from at the church when you respawn and see static dead bodies. Nicely done valve :p
lol i found a few odd bodies! i can't remember why but.. if you jump in the basket.. at the end of it's lovely journey it ALWAYS killed you by falling.. so i respawn just near it.. hop in.. and hop out on the cliff face.. yey i think im safe.. walking along.. combine body doing a static star jump :D lovely! continue get to the jetty bit where that fisher dude is he starts talking.. and i randomly "fall" and die :S reload and it does it again same spot every time!!!
i also noticed that there must be stream loading in the game at trigger points instead of" LOADING " coming up.. when u spawn look up at the wood area bit where you finish.. its as low detail as the houses in the distance... yet when u get there.. its all cool and detailed..
hrm..
Im having problems with mine. Keeps freezing and locking up. anoying if you ask me

hmmmm
ive not found one bug/glitch yet.....
works flawlessly everytime
The only problem I had was when changing the screen res, but open restarting the game it was fine.
how does the commentary work - had it switch off first time round, turned it on but now I just get speach bubbles?

Face them with the target and press use 'E'.
You just point your crosshair at them and press your use key.
Was quite a nice little demo. I'm quite impressed my rig (written below) was able to run it so well. 1024x768 with everything on full (apart from AA) and it ran perfectly.

I'm going away for training in the RAF soon (next couple o weeks) so can't have my all singing all dancing PC with me. However your screen shots made it clear to be that I need to spend £1600 on a 17" 1680x1200 laptop with 7800GTX graphics... I am now £1600 worst off...

Intel celeron 2.0Ghz, 768mb PC2100 RAM and a ATi radeon 9800 pro 128mb.
And it plays :D abit laggy and i plus from time to time to let the computer cool down but it plays.

wow you guys weren't joking, that was short.
Very nice 'tour'... They've made some fantastic technologies here.
The commentary was great, it's cool to hear how they did each part.
lol even when you launch it it says "launch HDR demo" not "launch fantastic new map/level that is uber long".. it's a showcase.. and a good one at that :D i'll be finding the latest JedsHLMV and gettin the music from when ur in the church from the GCF :D.. dno why but i rather like it :D
Reading Steam news they mention that they've had really good feedback about the commentary and plan to use it in future releases. Makes you wonder whether future games will be like movie DVD's, played either with or without commentary. I would really appreciate knowing more about how some games were made...
Yea... like the movies though, the commentary totally kills the mood.
In retrospect, I should've played the level before I switched on the commentary.
Maybe they should have an extras menu, so you can try small parts of different levels with commentary, so it doesn't harm game play. Or, what about unlocking the commentary levels once you've done the game level - that would be neat and get you really into completing the game?
yea most people played it then ran the commentary :) i did think it's better that way

I totally agree. Looked fantastic and all that but the commentary did ruin the atmosphere. It was like watching a film with commentary that told you what was coming up. If you haven't yet played it then do so without commentary and then re-run with.
that looks bloody lovely.

Ah well: good HDR showcase. Now looking forward to next HL2 installment :)

It got me in the mood for HL2 again, to such point that I started replaying it. Funny how you whizz through it the second time, but I'd forgotten just what a cracking game it is - HDR or not...

that's all it is ya know
a HDR TECHDEMO... it even says it when you launch it.. it's like one of the tech demo's by ati or nvidia.. but playable.. and more interactive.. in that respect it's fantastic, how many tech demo's are that interactive? none...
i wish people would stop slating it for saying it's short.. it's a tech demo, simple as. considering the amount of stuff the crammed into it.. and the level of detail they went into with textures.. and normal mapping, and the face light absorbtion etc.. it's amazing.... but it's NOT just a new playable part of the game.. it's a pretty big stress test just to showcase how beautiful it can look.. and i still don't think it's at it's full potential..

I hope you're doing it on hard mate, it is a much more enjoyable game on hard I find. Ppl **** me off sometimes lots of friends i know are like 'that HL2, what a bunch of crap, i finished it in a day on easy'
what the heck is the point on easy grrr.. i wish they wouldnt provide that difficuly level.

I know that but I can still be dissapointed can't I??
Looks lush and as I said its got me looking forward to the next installment of HL2: the reason for my post. I wasn't moaning merely saying it was short and very sweet  :)
Hear hear! I play games on hard mode aswell!
It's also funny when you get kids saying 'Yea, I beat the puzzles on HL2, they were pretty hard, but I got them in the end...'
You even had to THINK about the 'puzzles' in HL2? Try Myst...
yea i remember myst and stuff.. that game takes friggin weeks...
lol theres like 1 person i know other than me thats done doom3 on nightmare.. and id say maybe 2 more of hundreds who never tried it above "normal" difficulty.. lol and those who run through a game with godmode on.. how silly!!

HL2: Lost Coast is definitely short...but in that short time you learn quite a bit of what the valve guys go through in order to produce something this good. I didn't actually play with comments the first time, so I didn't notice that the lighting focus changes (as they said, due to the actual movement of the human eye's iris). I noticed it when they pointed it out the comment...at which time I played with light focus for like a half hour watching the light adjust as I looked at bright objects and back at dark walls.
I'm able to run it at full graphics, minus full AA.

Most game freezes are to do with over heating, often in regards to the graphics card as CPU overheats more often lead to reboots or complete shut offs if the BIOS is decent.
lost coast does seem to still be one of those rather system intensive programs.. so just make sure ur not overheating, there are probably still some bugs with it though.. so it could also be that
TheFallenAngel
12-11-2005, 16:52
I don't think its overheating though, its only the game that crashes not the system. Also the game crashing has been reported by a lot of people.
yea, there was an update "fixing" this.. i havent had a problem with it yet, but a few people get to point x then it crashes.. it's full of bugs like, but its pretty as can be!
TheFallenAngel
12-11-2005, 18:21
Well Steam should update it then itself?
Its always doing something or other to bloody delay your gaming!
that's it..
yea steam updates, but maybe they haven't fixed everything yet..
