Ok well loads of help is needed on this one.

I am at Durham Uni and just managed to set the computer up on the network (having to wait for login details etc) and to get on the net.

First things first i cannot play games because of the set-up, i.e. the games don't think the computer is connected to the internet, and so i cannot play counter-strike source or battlefield 2.

Also i cannot go on the internet on anything else other than internet explorer. I want to be able to use firefox and opera but it just wont work, what should i do? In Firefox i click on connection settings (in options) and choose automatically detect (lan) settings and it still wont work.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Also my whole computer is very slow, Battlefield 2 takes ages to load up, i.e after inserting the dvd and clicking start bf2 it takes minutes for the intro video to START! whereas at home it was pretty instantaneous!

What is happening? I am not allowed to use Avast, and AVG didnt seem to work, so i had to install a ePO thing (McAfee thing). What is the best thing to do and can anyone help me? (As they have to pre-vet the PC with this CSA scan thing)

Cheers

Ian

The uni will be blocking the ports... Simple as that. You won't have a hope in hell of getting them to open the ports either (they don't see using their bandwidth for playing online games too kindly).

Do you have to log into a domain? If so, their servers could be invisibly pushing across proxy configs on IE... Go ask the network admin if thats the case.. They *might* give you the proxy address to input into FireFox... If not... looks like using IE might be your only net resource.

I was in halls for two years and well, did no gaming.

Do more drinking instead and get yourself a flat with a kick **** connection, it's my option now!

Well it says that i should be able to play on the games etc, and everything should work! They said so long as it doesnt affect other peoples access (for doing work) its fine! So ill just have to see and see how it goes. After a bit ill call them and see!

Drinking, don't worry i think i am drinking enough :p (rest night tonight!)

Im a bit annoyed about not being able to use firefox or any other browser though!

Any reson why everything is so slow and lethargic. Just opening up firefox takes some time, before its starts looking for a website!

I know when I was working for our Uni's hall internet service that if we had a request from a user wanting a specific game to work, we would check the ports used, and if it wasn't a huge range then quite often we would open the ports.

I'm in the same boat as you, and almost every other student with internet in halls. I can see why they block the ports, to prevent possibilities of viral ifection spreading round the network and to stop you using certain programs, mainly P2P as alot of the stuff downloaded is illegal and puts the university at jeopardy but its still really annoying

well i am totally against p2p etc, but all i want is gaming, but i have heard that the original counterstrike and unreal tournament both work internally! :p

Almost every game will work internally, at least over your particular subnet without any problems. Contact the people who supply your connection, they might be able to open the ports for you. I know when I was working for a University in-hall provider we would open ports on the firewall if there was demand from users (sometimes if it was only one user and one port). It all depends on whether you have a team running it who is there to provide a service foremost, or whose main priority is to shield the Uni network from problems.

Not everything you download P2P is illegal, it is meant for legitimate reasons but many people use it to share illegal stuff. blizzard even use it to reduce the load when patch day come for WoW and its pretty much the only method for downloading free (and legal) fansubs unless you want to become a premium member to some sites :(

I was gonna try and get a program my friend reccomended to re-route programs through open ports but I really don't want to suffer the consequences if I do so I guess its bye bye to online games for a year.
