im thinking of using a celeron powered SFF for the car..however a couple of questions if you dont mind.
a) will the power consumption/heat production be a problem? (ive never used a celeron and have no idea what they are like)
b) is there any advantage ..apart from upgradability.. of using a Celeron over an epia M system?
thanks
Paul

i think that as long as you have a good cooler and thermal paste on there and you dont run any large programs you should be fine. you could always make so that the car's air conditioning cool the processor somehow.
If you fiddle around and underclock it it should use less power and make less heat. A Celeron is basily a cut down pentium 4.

cosmo, thanks for that.
I knew the celereon was a cut down P4 - but didnt know if it was less efficient - ie more power + more heat.
i couldnt afford a Pentium M and am not too familiar with the mATX and ITX formats so wanted to stick with somthing more familiar.

Heat wise shouldn't be a problem with a standard cooler. Power wise.. I run a 2ghz system on a 150watt PSU in my media PC if thats any help.

and so is ITX :) (just they tend to have built on CPU's and be a little pricy) - six

errm i think you should rethink that statment, how many itx boards can you find with latest CPU support 939/775 as well as the x2 cores, and with either a pci-e graphics slot or agp as that matters. i know if one itx board in existance with 775 and pci express 16 slot. the only thing i can think you are on about is the powers the same? 20 pin

ITX is just a form factor :) people tend just to think about the EPIA stuff! ;) My media center is an ITX rig (see sig) and not your everyday EPIA setup. Oh and you can get ITX with PCIe slots.. though all pentium based so far.. A64 would be nice though. - six

i would try to stay away from anything larger than mini itx .. just due to power etc ... mini itx with powersuplys like the M1 are superb for cars low power .. and have all the crank controls and battery monitor functions
also mini itx systems will be a lot smaller... i cant wait for the roll out of nano Itx
