Well, having played through the demo numerious times, I can say without a doubt that 1gb ram is NOT enough to play this game with all the settings on high, the lag from the HD loading stuff is almost unbareable.
So, just upped the gaming rig to 2gb & F.E.A.R. zips along with all the settings on high, including AA & AF at 1024x768 on a X850XT PE. :D

Whats the point in that? They should have optomised it for 1GB then let people with 2GB crank things up even more, not make it crap with 1GB and force people to get 2GB.
This is why soon i am giving up on the PC gaming market and getting a PS3, sick of things like this happening, built on a reasonable budget its not like my pc is slow . Im not forking out another £100-£150 just to play F.E.A.R on High, they can kiss my ass! BF2 was the biggest let down of the year too, how can they release a game with so many bugs in it, i feel like i have been ripped off, when i handed over my £30 it was under the impression i was getting the finished product, not a bloody Beta version! These companies rush these games out asap in order to make the most money, with Doom 3 you can tell that was made with lots of TLC and that runs like a dream on most rigs.

Well isn't that what they're doing? letting people with 2gig play on high settings, anything less and you need normal settings. If people want lots of good looking textures and large landscapes then you're going to need more ram.
I think you'll find a lot more than 1-2% have 2gig now, especially since BF2 has come out. It seems to me that people got comfortable with 1Gig as the norm for a lot longer than usual, the steps from 256mb to 512mb to 1gig were considerably closer together.

I agree with Hermie's comments on that. Whilst it undoubtedly helps... you don't really need 2GB RAM. I can still play any game I want on a rig with 'just' 1GB RAM, and a 9800 Pro. Not on the highest settings of course... but on setings which are perfectly acceptable. If I wanted to run everything on high however... then I would expect to need nigh-on the best hardware available... and plenty of RAM to cope with it. Nowadays... that's 2GB.

That's entirely up to you... as is how much you pay for RAM. You can certainly £100 - £150 for high-end stuff. But equally,,, if you don't OC... you can get by quite happily with an extra 1GB of (e.g.) Geil/Crucial Value RAM - which'll cost ya less than half that amount. 2GB is 2GB at the end of the day :D

I might sell my Corsair XL Pro ram then and get 2GB of normal stuff. Might not end up costing that much if can get a good price for it. Problem is i dont like ebay so have to look into where else to sell. Just annoying as i only bought this ram 2-3 months ago.

Imma getting me some High performance (to keep 1:1 with my OC :D) 2 x 1gb RAM.
Crucial Ballistix/ Tracers is the good stuff so Tracers are going to be in my rig :D
And I agree - even with my 7800GTX in BF-2 I need to turn down the AA as the RAM tops out :(
lol we can't expect games to run on 1gb forever dude.. F.E.A.R. was developed to be pretty much "next gen" as it were, they always wanted to create a game which was for higher end machines, that game runs fine on my rig and looks fantastic! even not at highest settings, but you can't expect games to look their best if they forever limit themselves by hardware, then we'd still be stuck back in the sonic and mario days wouldn't we :P

Ordered mine from Game and it hasn't arrived yet. The release date has changed three or four times since I ordered, I don't know if the game has even gone gold yet :confused:

Gamespot will be giving the American release, I see it says worldwide release but they always seem to release games at the end of the week in the UK, America uses the start of the week.

Here's a question! Should the full version of the game run virtually the same as the demo did on my system?
As you all know B&W2 doesn't really work but i'm hoping F.E.A.R will because there isnt so much that needs to be processed.

From what I've heard, it should run better.
The grapevine tells me that the demo version isn't optimised, so the full version should be extra sweet.

the demo's are better optimised for lower systems the beta is UBER on the new cards though :) like i said 200fps :D

arg... tried playing fear. paused every 60seconds it seemed to cache more stuff off the hdd.
So i bung in another gig of ram only discover my board (k8n neo2 plat) doesn;t like 4 double sided sticks of ram and will only run it at 166mhz!!
i;ve stopped the pauses but crippled my comp! oh joy!

Got an email from Game yesterday saying it had been shipped, recieved it this morning :D Looks like shops don't care too much about the Tuesday release date.
Played a couple hours so far, I don't think I'll be playing it late at night in a dark room :o It's not as good as HL2 as far as storyline but it's still the best single player FPS out since then.

ah! not bloody likely on a students budget.
i found a way to fix it tho after i decided to engage my own brain and not let the game configure the settings itself. it was setting the texture res to max. which fills up ur gfx memory and system mem unless u have 2gig odd. doesn;t look a huge deal different either.
wot really annoys me is the fact that fear just doesn;t like high resolutions. kills the fps on my comp something awful. not really a prob for most ppl with tft (unless they are silly daft ones) but for me with my trusty crt that makes games look great at 1600*1200 its a bit pants really.
are you mad?! have you seen the high textures compared to the medium?! they're like twice the resolution and look as crisp as i've ever seen

You should try 1920*1200 ;) I haven't actualy set it that high, it's sometimes struggles as it is at the inbuilt max res. Looks ok considering it's not at it's native resolution for my tft, the dust and flame effects look great.

I read somewhere a while back that F.E.A.R. uses up to 900mb worth of memory when its running, which would explain why 1gb just doesn't cut it with this game on high.

Pretty much any RAM will do but some decent stuff with tight timings is always good. For value: GEIL Value Performance is very cheap and decent.
For slightly more: OCZ Platinum Rev 2 is good and also even more expensive: GSkillz LE or Mushkin Redline.
GEIL One is also very tight timings :)
I am going to get some Geil Value with the Heat spreaders on them. I have 2 x 512 already so i may get another 2 or go for 1 stick of 1gig.

i see that geil value can be had for 155 quid for 2 gb of ram (CAS 3.0 8-4-4 @ DDR400 PC3200) how much of a perfomance increase would you get with something faster?
i see that faster stuff is a lot more money i think that it would have to be significantly better for the extra £80-£100.

cant remember the last time i got something on release day from play :| its why i will usually use game for games unless plays price is a lot cheaper.
their delivery just aint what it used to be - i remember when i could order one day and it would be here the next - now its usually 3+ days :(

This is the first retail patch released for F.E.A.R. updating the intense First-Person Shooter to v1.01 from v1.00. Read below for all the specifics on what it fixes.
Global:
Fixed a problem where players could fall under the map after pressing ESC while climbing a ladder.
Fixed a bug where water FX would play where there was no water in the "Heavy Resistance" level.
Multiplayer:
Fixed the Game Type filter on the server browser screen.
Fixed broken ladder animations.
Spectator "Fly" mode now works as intended.
SlowMo Score Time is now reported through the in-game server browser for SlowMo CTF games.
Fixed a problem where players would sometimes spawn into Team Elimination games as a neutral player.
Team Eliminmation servers will no longer advance to the next round if you are the first to join and then switch teams.
Dead players will no longer win the round in Elimination game types if they have the highest score when time runs out.
The score tally on the HUD now works properly in all Elimination game types.
Remote clients can no longer log into SCMD on hosted games as original intended. SCMD still works as before on dedicated servers.
The weapon of the player you are watching will no longer appear on the screen when using the "Follow" spectator mode.
Fixed problem with grenades getting stuck on or bouncing off of breakable windows in certain levels.
Further optimized performance and fixed minor lighting and art bugs in the Streets CTF level.

Game developers should be making games based around gameplay, you could have an online FPS and you could be versing some other guy from the other side of the planet and you have a $4000 PC with 2Gb of ram a 7800 and the latest AMD processor and then the other guy could have a $300 slapped together celeron 2.4 a Ati 9600 and 512 of ram, you would be on a map with all this nice grass, the guy with the 4 grand pc can draw all this grass and the other dude cant so he doesnt draw it and all he sees is you walking around in the middle of nowhere and he could take you out and you wouldnt know where it came from.
Developers need to think more about the gameplay and less about the graphics, who wants to play a game with the greatest graphics and levels like super mario?

I know what you mean, F.E.A.R kinda runs alright on my rig although near the end the screen was completely black :( but its a very good game!

You know, I think the 1.7ghz minimum requirement for F.E.A.R. might actually be right! Just as a test, I installed it on my 2.6 P4, 1gb ram, 256mb FX5500...letting the game choose the settings I got a whopping max frame rate of 19fps, min of 6! :D
Setting everything to minimum it flew along at over 200fps!!!
So for anyone running similar hardware to that, you'll be able to run the game just fine, just gonna take some trial & error to find the happy medium between the automatic settings & the minimum...looks bloody awful at the lowest settings!
Installing it on my gaming rig (3.4 P4, 2gb ram, X850XT PE) and setting everything to high I'm getting a min of 30fps and a max of 148, I'm happy with that. :D
As far as the game goes...I'm going to have to go into town tomorrow, I'm already on my 2nd pair of clean underwear. :eek: Nuff said.

At last it came!
I was just walking out the door to come to uni and there it was, sitting on the door matt. So after 30 mins of playing, just to see what its like becuase i never had a chance to play the demo, its very very good!
Im surpirsed though becuase my rig seems to play it fine (Spec is in my Sig)! i played the first level and about 15 mins into the second level (after you get dropped off by the chopper) and it seems fine, no real lagging or anything. Its using 98% of my 1GB of ram but i cant see any problems so far, got everything on high, 4X AA etc and that soft shadows thing enabled etc.
When does it start to struggle with 1GB of Ram, is this cause my ram is pretty decent and overclocked quite high? Have i not played it enough to encounter any problems yet with my 1GB of ram?

finally this day has come!
well technically thursday for me, i phoned on tues sayin wen they(gamestation) will have it in for. a guy said phone wednesday so i did 'hi do you have FEAR in yet? 'yeh it came out tuesday.' 'WHAT!?!'
anyway i have it know and after over a year since i 1st heard about this game, it feels way better playing it than seeing a video.
im using a 9600 right now(my bros) as my 9800 pro is packing up but i tried my 9800 pro and i got a good 30mins with it untill it shutdown my pc. it runs well smoother than the 9600 but the 9600 is just as good.
im in desprate need of a 9800 card! fast!
OK so I'm a little behind but my copy of FEAR turned up today and could I be any more disappointed. I'm still playing HL2 and BF2 and loving them. I have HL2 running at 1024*768 with 2xAA and 8xAF, medium settings and it looks great on my 9800pro. So along comes fear and to get any sort of decent FPS I have to run it on 800*600 no AA no AF. It looks like I'm back playing duke nukem on a K5.
Now I understand that it's next generation and I can also understand expecting slower speeds for better looking GFX but it looks worse that HL2 and runs slower?? Surely it should be possible to get it running at the same GFX level as HL2 at the same speeds or am I just asking for far too much?
I just don't know what to do with my money any more. To upgrade for me now requires around £500 to get a PCI-E MB, AMD 3000+ and 7800GT OC. Is it worth the money when for half the price I can buy an Xbox 360? I'm so frustrated with PC games because I love them so much, have always prefered the PC over consoles but simply can't afford to keep doing this.

btw u shud be able to run hl2 and bf2 at a happy 1280x960 with 2aa 2af and it'll look better :)

Speaking of the memory requirements for F.E.A.R.: I just bought me up some GSkillz PC4000 2 x 1gb sticks. Not bad for £150 shipped to the UK from a mate.
Should sort me out when I buy FEAR :)

the new patch seems to make the game not work if you have certain programs active at windows start up,which i have now sorted!
was a bit of a pain tho.... :(
as in the patch that was released at retail? or is there now another one?

Nah, the story is kind of drip fed to you, I'm hoping things become a bit clearer by the end. For now I'm enjoying the weapons and finaly I made it out of them offices :rolleyes:

Its been out for weeks now! It only took 12 hours to complete on medium difficulty. Not my fault im damn good at it! ;)
lol try it at the hardest settings.. see how long you last in one of the major firefights, or versus the meat head guys with armour.. and those sodding robots! jeez slow motion is an ABSOLUTE must then.. or u just get your ass owned.. mind you even with slow mo.. the AI is massively superior.. clever sods lol
Well i am doing it on hard, pointless playing games on medium, they are over so fast and too easy. Am getting a good challenge, loving the shotgun :)

LOL ya i am with this guy on it. I love the game also on multiplayer and i love the way you can host and admin your own servers.
I love my Resident evil type of games and i must say that this game is up there with the best games of all time Resident evil 2 and Metal gear solid.

Whewn and only when i install it my game does not load and when i look in my task manager it says FEAR.exe is runing and useing 985 of cpu.

i had a problem with the 1.02 patch which was resolved by turning off a few of my start up programs in msconfig.
if you go to their forums you will find your not the only one not impressed with the new patch , but they do give you some ways round the problems
(worked for me).
not had a problem yet, but i haven't tried the new map yet either..
i tell you what i did do though was setup some custom weapon configs for multiplayer which ya'll might like!
think.. Penetrator (the nail gun) firing 100 nails at a time, with a 10 shot clip (u shud see this sodding well hit people it's crazy), shotgun fires 20 shots instead of 8, smg fires 20 instead of 1, pistols with a 50 clip size, upto 2 minutes of slow mo, with 1 second wait time... it's SO much fun.. but if u fire the nailgun more than about 4 times ur fps just DIES from all the smoke + debris :) i'll have to record some footage, it's hilarious!!
oo and changing the close combat hit figures to something like 1 or 2 so you can have a proper punch up, it's wickid!

The new map, (Asylum), is great. Very large map though, with less than 10 players its sometimes hard to find someone/something to shoot at, big RAM use as well, I have 2 gig of Ballistix and it went down to less than 700 meg free running this map.
The weapons thing sounds funny, you have an IP if its a public server, think that would be a bit of fun.
My 7800GT and 2Gig Ballistix turned up today but no MB and CPU yet. Should all arrive tomorrow.
Looking forward to playing FEAR in all it's glory (Or should that be gory?)

This game is majorly sweet. The AI's great and graphics are awesome. Little dissapointed I had to turn down the water and turn off soft shadows. But everything else is on max so can't complain really ;)
Started playing today... Awesome! The shadows and lighting are just superb... I can kinda understand now why the 9800pro wasn't up to the job!

1gb is plenty if you're not into graphics. I have 1gb of PC3200 and it suits me just fine. However, I keep the game on medium graphics. Graphics hardly make the game for me. It's all about the gameplay (as long as I get above 30fps, I'm happy). OO, also, I have a Radeon 9800XT and this seems to be plenty ftm.

I read on Bit-Tech that water on max and med makes no difference. I have AA on 4x on TSAA so thats why I had to crank a couple of others down :)
oh righto, i think there are different "types" of water, some is staticly shadered, others it reactively shadered, like u run through it and it ripples, some of it doesn't....

id say more uniqueness than graphics,. u can see just about a perfect representation of yourself whatever you do.. eg
ladders- shoulders, arms, legs,
sat down - shoulders, legs...
shadows are done from the view model on your screen, so if you put your gun near a wall near a light a REALLY long pretty shadow is projected..

I can't praise this game enough... Everyones talked about the GFX but the sound effects are amazing too. The way the background music grows as you approach a dark room or corridor is so polished. As you move another meter or so another layer appears to the music (Like another string or bassline)... Just the music gives me the heeby Jeebies!
Anyway.. The 7800GT was worth every penny just for this game!!
isn't it just, Monolith OWN at action activated music and sounds, they get the immersion PERFECT, they got it right in AVP2 and they got it even BETTER in Fear :) and yes 7800gt was worth every penny here too
with eax and the full works this game is SO intense

Probably will put it back to the 21st now knowing my luck. Wonder why they keep putting these things back? Maybe its to do with the logistics of getting the actual stock to all the stores in time.
Doom 3 needs 1GB to run at 1024*768 with everything on high..I have 2GB of RAM but only have a Radeon X700AGP, so it lags wiht everything on high at 1024*768, it's cheaper to get 2gb of RAM than to get a good graphics card...
how did those 1gig vs 2gig benches go? since we've been bumped...

people were complaining about "500kb sigs" and "lets have text only sigs" so i'm pretty much taking the ****.. it's like 3.05kb and is text ;) well.. in a way
Finally.. Just completed FEAR (Bit slow I know).... Very very good but not really very hard on the standard setting. Don't think I ever got below 6 health packs in my inventory. I think I'm going to start playing games on a harder setting in future cos I don't really have time to play games through twice and I prefer them to be a bit of a challenge.
Anyway. That's not a criticism of the game cos it's awesome.. Well worth £30 that!
lol i had 10 health packs sometimes, but when u hit the hard places ur hitting ur healthpack button more than fire! and then u run out of em JUST when u need em, and then have to think stupidly tactically so u can take out 6 soldiers in the first wave, with a big nasty blue eyes dude and then another wave of smart arses .. then bang.. naded :( lol i hope they make a fear 2 :D fearsome!

I'm just starting to realise that. There were so many times I had 10 health packs and then came across 2 more lying around!! What also annoyed me was I spent the whole game trying to conserve ammo for the better weapons until I really needed them.. Then, last level, they get taken away from you... Doh!!
What's the news on FEAR mods??? I.e. Is it worth keeping my copy or shall I ebay it??
I've been playing FEAR for a while now on my average rig . It seems to play well on medium settings , but what a game . I've not enjoyed a game as much since FARCRY .. Excellent stuff .
