Classic :p
Looks like lizzy is going to have to knight the team "YAWN" yeah 16 years of training to finally get a winning team together well done boys
I didn't know who had got the cricket - I thought that it would be BBC. I thought cricket was on the list of things which must be on terrestrial (like the cup final). It's not like you could go to a pub to watch a test!

Little bit off topic, but why is it called, "The Ashes"?
Channel 4 has had the cricket for years.
Bloomer. Its called the ashes because last century there was a test against the ozzies where they bowled us all out for 70. The bails where burnt and thats what the ashes are
Was it not a series white wash? IIRC it was the wife of an Aussie cricketer who burnt them & proclaimed them to be 'the ashes of English cricket'.
Did you know that they were dropped recently - 'bad luck Warney'!!! ;) :p :D

In affectionate remembrance of English cricket which died at The Oval, 29th August, 1882. Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances, RIP. NB The body will be cremated and the Ashes taken to Australia.
Australia’s first victory on English soil over the full strength of England, on August 29, 1882, inspired a young London journalist, Reginald Shirley Brooks, to write this mock “obituary’’. It appeared in the Sporting Times.

Well when a typical turnout for an international cricket match is under 40,000 and county cricket has pretty much died on its feet you have to wonder who cares? Its not like they won the world cup.
Rugby World Cup parade - 1.1 million (no more would fit in the square).
England Ashes parade - less than 100,000....
For what they are paid the cricket squad doesn't put in paticuarly great performances and poor county cricket attendences also show what a poor idea centerally contracted players are. Don't even get me started one footie players....
Yes, but don't you think that the 1.1 million was inflated by glory hunters/tourists/sightseers? I'd bet if the cricket team won the WC, they would do bettter.
Also is there not a small matter of the London bombings in between the 2 celebrations?

No not really, hence the reception when they got off the plane aswell! There is no way cricket could equal that turnout, the sports simply not popular enough, even Rugby League pulls in bigger crowds week in/week out than either of the types of Cricket.

I thought it was 18 years.... and het that, even if it was 16, it was SIXTEEN YEARS, not 1 or 2, SIXTEEN!!! lol Took em long enough to take it from the Aussies.
(sorry I have this thing about the english :p)

Haha, it seems every country has "this thing about England". Wonder why that is?...probably cos were the greatest at everything. And we don't begrudge losing to inferior countries from down under or elsewhere occasionally. :D
Well my reason is a bit different lol. Im on another english forum where I absolutely love, and theres many english friends I have made :p Plus I have been in a debate for the past 6 months about NZ vz England discussions since I was young I had been attracted to the thought of England...... ok Im blabbering now lol. But anyway the ashes win was brought up in the debate and that it was just a win. And it took them 18 years to do so. Congrats to them of course but still, as I said, took them long enough :p

The NZ V England Rugby match this year won't be interesting this year as the youngsters of the England side won't have gelled yet. However Walves vs NZ could be a very very good match with very similar styles of play. Plus both nations have very beautiful landscapes, passionate supporters and a strong Rugby tradition so the nations are well matches.
On a personal note I'm more interested in Somoa vs my beloved Harelquins (praying half of the Quins don't get killed) a week before the England game.
Samoa, wow thats going to be a hard out lot to beat, or I would think they would anyway.
Do any brit/english teams ever wear those big hulky things the Americans wear for rugby? I so cant see how they can play with them things on...
ummm, is it my fault this topic was turned to rugby? lol

Are you refering to American Football by any chance Oriana which whilst based on Rugby has little in common with the sport anymore? The American RFU is bound by the same playing regulations as our nations, i.e those set out by the irb so are very limited on padding allowed under the shirts. However Rugby is a very small sport in the U.S and there are less than 10 professional players, all of who play in Europe and Austrailia.

Yeah Samoa are actually a strong rugby country.....and no, real rugby is for men [and some women play too these days, though not against men yet lol] not namby pamby's in protective suits.
no offence meant to any players of that game.

Yes I guess I do mean American Football. Tis really confusing because here football and rugby are the same thing.
Wow only 10 professional players? Damn...

Somoa is a very strong Rugby nation who suffer from their best players being pinched by the all blacks and players travelling to other countries to play making assembling a strong squad difficult at anytime other than world cups (which is where Somoa often do well).
Luckily alot of the current Somoan squad play in the UK so will mean a strong squad for their warmup game against us. No one has any idea of the type of squad Quins will put out but anything other than a second 15 would be silly as we currently in an unbeaten run on our way to securing our promotion to the premiership again (thanks to a certain NZ Fly half called Andrew Mehterns).
I actually find that quite surprising (Luckily alot of the current Somoan squad play in the UK ")
Andrew Merthens was once one of my favourite players, now I think Mr Leon McDonald is the better half. For any team to have him on their side, that would be bloody great for em because he has an awesome kick and a great player.
I dont know of any actual Samoan teams, but I have seen them mixed with other ethnic teams and damn, I though they were gonna bowl anyone, their team or not, who got in the way lol. But yeah theyre good players and definitely strong (not as good as the maori all blacks though :p but they me fave team! next to the all blacks)
Am I right in saying that the Samoan stength is in sevens?
I believe that my dad knows the NZ sevens player Eric Rush.

No its Fiji that has the incredibly strong sevens squad and often win the international tournaments and are right up there with us and France. Infact the Army won the Middlesex sevens last year made up largely of players who enlisted into our Army from Fiji.

Eric Rush.... wow that seems like going way back with the players. Like personally he knows him?

Yeah Fiji are a bloody strong team, but I always thought twas the samoans that were stronger. NZ Maori could beat both of em though. :p
When 'the lions' came here a few moths ago to play, they lost all 3 test matches against the all blacks including against the Maori A.B.

I've always seen Fiji has the stronger sevens team and Somoa as the stronger 15 side. However both sides have been badly weaked since Rugby went professional and their best players end up playing for NZ or the clubs. Many of these international Somoans are actually here in the first division in England rather than Premiership. Our tempory relegation from the premiership has atleast given me the chance to see a whole host of Somoans playing for various ND1 clubs.
Alright...... I understood until after samoans were written then I just got lost. I have no idea what you just finished writing about but oh well.

We have a league system not a closed 'super 12 (14)' like you do. We (harelquins) were relegated as we finished bottom last season into the first division (below the premiership which is the top league in the land). Most of the teams here have a couple of Somoans to ensure they have big packs as the Somoans I've seen are huuuuuuggeeeeee. Hopefully we'll be back in the premiership next season.
Does that help explain it?
Honestly that helps a whole lot thankyou very much.
Most the teams here too have a couple samoans in em, but we also have maori so tis all good. Scare the opposition I say! :D

Oh well tis all good.... could always get someone to video tape...
(p.s- whats the bet NZ will win? :) )
