Has everyone heard about this on the news?

Its apparently the most powerful Hurricane you can get and its heading straight Louisiana city. Winds up to 160MPH

How scary would that be? Glad I don't live in a part of the world that gets them. Imagine being told you have to evacuate your house and wondering if its still gonna be there when you return.

Best of luck to them!

Winds up to 160MPH

Constant winds to that speed Tom... but gusts are expected to reach 200mph+!!

It's gonna be even scarier when it hits New Orleans later this morning though (which is why it's being evacuated... for the most part!)... coz it was 'only' a category 1 when it first hit Florida. It's expected to be category 5 by the time it hits land again

Great place to run a passive heatsink, though, I imagine...

Luckily My Aunty, Uncle and their 2 Kids live in a fairly new house Near Ft. Lauderdale so they were able to stay in their home because it has all the new hurricane protection, although they have no power except for a generator which luckily they bought about 2 months ago! Trees have fallen down and the roads are flooded but I'm glad they're ok :) Hope there are no more fatalities :(

But what would be the point - ambient noise would me you may as well use a 'tornado'. :p

Seriously though, I do feel for the people - leaving your home, expecting it to be battered if not demolished would be heart breaking. I wonder how much house insurance is in coastal USA? The other side ain't much better (San Adreas).

I think its now a very strong category 3 and still capable of widespread destruction (winds up to 130mph...gusts higher.....I'm very concerned about the storm surge it may well produce seeing as New Orleans is below sea level........) it does seem to have weakened.

Actually Hurricane Ivan 'the terrible' has been blamed for producing the highest wave ever recorded

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4739741.stm

However the tallest wave or surge (a better description) ever recorded was created by a glacial landslide in Lithua Bay, Alaska in 1958.......it measured an incredible 1,740ft high and stripped all the trees off the slopes

ITs interesting to see how America copes with the 3rd world in their own back yard.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.

This'll sound bad...

But maybe it's a good thing in some ways. Now people actually ARE starving in America... (apart from obvious gains, such as weight loss :p ). They can now see what it is like for people living in 3rd countries... Except their situation is still worse than that in New Orleans.. With disease etc.

Perhaps those unlucky enough to find themselves in that position will appreciate, and sympathise more with what people live through for their whole lives in 3rd world contries.

Everquest II players can donate to help victims:

You guys should have saw the gas prices spike after the hurricane hit...they went up like a dollar in under 24 hours...now they are back down lower that before Katrina hit!

Don't you think that is slightly out of order towards America?

Some people would argue that America has caused more damage to the world than any other country. You gotta admit they do like a good war!

To be honest they have done a first class job of effing up Vietnam and now Iraq, how many more wannabe terrorists has that created. I thought invading Iraq was meant to get us cheaper oil but prices have gone up, its all bull****!

Maybe if they had more to worry about on their own door step they might stop trying to be the World Police. Just remeber what goes around comes around.

Yeah, I agree, we, as the US, had no reason for going into Iraq. Sure, Saddam Hussein was a bad leader and all, but still, I thought Bush said it was gonna be a short war, not a war that would last. We have lost too many soldiers in my opinion and the Iraqies don't want us there, so why are we there?

I don't mean to have ago or anything but you two probably don't know the half of the reasons about Vietnam and Iraq (not that I do either), only what you read and see (which isn't always true).
