View Full Version : Being nice to n00bs

So I've started getting into BF2 and quite enjoy playing it, so when I get chance I hop onto a ranked server and squeeze a few hours in. So I'm playing last night and doing just below average in the rankings, which I'm perfectly happy with as I play online games for *fun* (something a lot of people seem to lose sight of these days).
So I'm flying around in one of those big helicopter things, getting a feel for it as they're not easy, but myself and my gunner did quite well and wiped out a fair few soldiers by gently hovering over enemy sites. I thought we did quite well, all things considered.
Eventually we get killed so re-spawn back at the helipad and we jump in again for another killing spree - joined by some obviously elite uber-clan player who expects everyone to be at his level.
We take off, I screw up trying to show off and nudge a tree on take-off. No harm done though, so I hope back in the chopper, quickly zip it back to the helipad and repair, then pick the guys back up and off we go. At this point Captain Perfection's rigged up his headphones and starts calling out some help to me, the pilot.
"Go right side" which obviously means a lot to another UberClan member but to me I assume means to head to the right. So I start turning, can't quite figure out what he's on about but maybe he's spotted some enemy unit I missed. He's then barking off along the lines of "What are you doing? Don't just fly around here; head to a flag"
Err, ok, that's what I was sort of doing until you started spouting of "Go right side" matey
So head to a nearby flag, no enemy there, nothing on radar, so let's head to the next one. Arrive there, nothing going on there either but naturally my gunner is in a sarcastic mood - "Nothing happening here <tut>" :p
To cut a long story short, we head to another, capture a flag and eventually got took out rather instantaneously by I presume a tank shot or someone crashing into us.
The parting commentary over the intercom was, in a rather well spoken english accent, "Pilot, you suck. Do not fly again."
Needless to say I just thought "f**k this, I can play on one of umpteen servers" so I just left without saying a thing, and just went elsewhere. But my point is, FFS, how are players supposed to practise and learn in this game without (1) making mistakes and (2) not having people with a rather elitist "I could do this better" attitude taking the mick out of you down the intercom :D ?!
I really came out of the game feeling disappointed and not wanting to play it again if people are going to be like that.
Be kind to n00bs, guys, we were all one at some point ;) !

Guys like that really pi$$ me off aswell, ok from time to time on Cs i used to get angry with a really bad noob who just stands in the way and get's you killed, but on games like 'Eve' if i find a noob i offer to help explain things or maybe give him a little money.
NICNESS TO NOOBS!

Yeah. I mean, FFS, can we all just remember that it's just a game at the end of the day?! A lot of things just come down to experience and learning the map/level but if it's not that, why not first try and be helpful and explain what the person is doing wrong :p ?!
Mind you, on the flip side, it helps to remember there's plenty of other servers out there to play on - so do what I did, and just leave the knobs along and play elsewhere :) !
EDIT: P.S. It's "corporation" ;)
I find it quite satisfying helping out noobs.. As long as they appear grateful for my advice.
In FPS it can be annoying when after 2 years of playing, some noob comes and blocks you or something. But if someone asks 'sorry, what did I do wrong?' I'd be more than happy to tell them, and advise them, why what they did is annoying, and if they could try not to do it again.
What I really hate is when you try to talk to someone, and they don't reply. Even if they just said 'I don't want to speak to you', or 'sorry, me no understand teh engleesh'.
Every1 is at a different level to each other, thats just life. People like me play to win, and i get great buzz out of this, we all get a rush in our own way. Mine is to win or at least try. Anyways, i can understand where ur coming from, if iam in a heli with a 'Novice' i just get off and let the guy do woteva he wants, i never soo far said anything to put another gamer down :)
But if your looking for a fun gaming community to have a serious munch at or just for some fun check out, www.114th.com - Every1 welcomed :D

It would be good to run private server sessions some times and just use the session as training, but you need a group to do this (i.e. a clan training session).
Like you say, it's all relevant. There are people far worse than me, but likewise they're are far more that are better. For example, I've TK'd by accident a few times and I always quickly type out an apology, whether I get voted against or not.
If u react to some1 being a tit, its pointless really becoz u end up getting frustrated, in your case u left the server... I just ignore them and carry on with my game :)

Brumster I am in the same boat as you. I play for fun and am not very good. I jumped in a helicopter with a guy who flew us straight into a hill which made me feel slightly better about my skills :)

I let noobs play around me and use them to my advantage when I can - they seem to be happy that I play around them rather than running off.
I hate the tits who think they own the place, mistakes happen and when they make one do they let anyone rip them up for it? no they just hurl abuse. I usually follow them around after that and just watch them, I learn their mistakes join the other team and reap the rewards of spying, noobs have intelligence as well.

Some people do take the online FPS thing extremely seriously, like in CS-Source, its like these people think they are actually in a highly trained anti-terrorist team and if you make one mistake it could be life or death for everyone.

I had that on our server. I got home from work and I felt like crusing round in a chopper taking the mic and getting silly kills. Making C4 jeeps and such like. I really didnt feel like taking the GAME seriously.
After a while a some clan members started givin us grief. Answer "I pay for this server so i'll do what the heck I like".

You do get some rather over obsessive people on BF2 and CSS. I don't play them online much due to 56k limitations! But the last time I played CSS some bloke from another country was humming down his mic and doing my nut! Then out of all the language he was speaking I heard my name and about 20 Terrorists where killing me lol!

HAHA very nice and very true!
Don`t worry mate some people think they have more right than others to play. Just don`t let um knock you. I used to play bfv(point of existance) and got a mean player but you have to learn. I think bf2 is pants by the way compared! I`m playing cs source and thats even more elitist but just keep plodding. If everyone was truly the same level there would be no point in playing.I hate the term noob too its probably dished out by some spotty teenager who would`nt dare in the flesh!
Brumster, see my other thread about our server. Come play - we're all learning over there but have picked up some good tips already and are getting better all the time.
You'll find that if theres not enough people on to start a game then we'll just practice for a bit in the helis etc.
Let me know your nickname and i'll get the guys to give you some priority with regards getting on etc.

Ah i had that problem, although it wasn't the game lagging just my connection. Same with heli's, then i kept getting called a noob because i would crash into a tree, really pi$$ed me off.
That was the demo, i decided never to actully get the full game.

found this read very amusing. It is a long read mind but quite funny.
BF2 Gaming Guide (http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=3097)
Found this on the 50Klicks Forum (http://www.50klicks.com/) and it sounds what you might like to have!
Im one of they ppl who shout abuse at noobs :D
But I only play CoD and WoW, CoD being out for a good few years now i just cant be bothered with ppl who dont know how to play. Camping spawn, hiding bushes etc really ****es me off on public servers.............. same goes for WoW, i cant stand when ppl at lvl 60 still cant play there class !!
I was playing a couple of days ago with an alt i made, and the warrior (fair enough only lvl 20 but still) didnt even know what weapons he could use (All of them exept wands), and that he was the tank, not me (shaman).
God i hate noobs :P
Scottyboy that guide is hilarious

By definition... that includes those who've just bought their very first computer, and [those who are] trying online gaming for the first time too!
Everybody has to start somewhere... but how are they supposed t' learn the tricks of the trade, with the likes of you around, taking the pi$$ every time they try something new for the first time
Very helpful... not :(
BTW: Yer [attempt at] :p smiley at the end of yer post doesn't detract from what you do!

Well hopefully ill recieve my copy of battlefield 2 tomorrow so ill show you the ultimate in noob ha ha ha!!! Ive had a quick go on the demo and i only had a quick go in the tank and jeep thing but i didnt know you could fly helicopters etc... get in there!!! if im going to crash im going to take a few people on the other team out with me!
is it easy to go onto servers etc...?? i mean are they in like country order... i only like uk ones like on cs:s obviously! :p
Scottyboy
04-09-2005, 18:59
I use all seeing eye and then you can sort them in country order. You can also then sort them by number of players so you can find a nice full server to play on.
Ahh but the thing is Fireblade, half the ppl i see on server have clan tags on etc, so its really more to do with them just being ****e.

Tbh shouting abuse at a noob is pointless, what do you get out of it? Maybe for once you should try and help them out instead of disscouraging them from playing further.
You are NOT a gamer, you are a bully!
Obviously not played many fps games then.........
Lets take CS for example, heres how trying to help somone would go -
Me - Hey man, you should try moving around etc and stop going into the same spot every round, then you might not get killed.
Random noob - STFU, i pwn you and your mom LOL !!1111 n00b
Me - ...............
Or in WoW -
Me - Hey, you might wanna try getting agro on the mobs, being thats what a warrior does.
Random lvl 60 - STFU i know how to play my class noob.
Me - ...............
I dont have the time or patience to deal with these ppl, and in most cases when you try help people that is the sort of reply you get.
In a way it is bullying them by shouting at them, but 9/10 they bring it on themselves.

I know the whole point here is being nice to new comers and I'm fine with that, but if I can just vent for a second.
Specifically in battlefield 2, if you're colour blind and can't tell the difference between blue and red writing signifying who is your enemy and who is your friend, OR if you just plain haven't bothered to get to know the rules and think that it's some kind of deathmatch, please don't chase me while I'm in a helicopter and shoot me down three times IN A ROW!
I'm sorry I've watched the thread for a few days and I had to get that out. I don't get much time for gaming but when i do, i have time for new people and I'll show them the ropes, but it's the ones who just come in try to fly a helicopter and shoot at me when I'm on their team, I swear I flew the whole 30 minute game the longest stretch was 20 minutes before this guy joined, then I got shot down three times by him. No appology no acknowledgement, it's that kind of new comer that I hate.
On the other hand I also hate those elitist people that will come over on the comms and tell people how stupid they are just cos they messed up or maybe haven't had asmuch time at the game, so I appreciate the whole tone of the thread as well.

I used to constantly play Cs so i know what some people are like. The person your talking to probably isnt a noob but a player who has been playing for aages and is still utterly $h*te. So you must still be nice to noobs but those kind of people are the dicks who you should just ignor and laugh at his score at the end of the game.
One thing i dnt understand in BF2 is why the hell do people ran into the BlackHwak (Fully loaded with others) and crash as soon as they take off...? If you cnt fly dnt bother jumping in the driving seat ;) Cheap way to gain points i know, but let some1 who can fly drive?
