anyone d/l it yet?

looks good, runs on my rig well with all gfx stuff max

one problem tho, they have not put a 1280 x 1024 res in, probably be in the full game,

a bit weird tho as thats the native res for 17" and 19" tfts'

yup it's alot better optimized than the beta was.. runs far smoother and far sexier.. and OMFG MORE scarier!!! it's made me jump SO much. i'm already addicted!!! can't wait for this title and to run it on my setup as and when i get the new one sorted. MOST impressed with the character face, expression, and texture detail, the water leaves competition standing... i'm immensly impressed

 I assume ye don't use a download manager then

A d/l manager is a must for large downloads like the F.E.A.R demo ;)

I was going to play it yesterday but after buying WoW I just didn't have a chance to

I'm going to download it today and play it tonight (since I've gathered that it'll be wasted if I play it during the day). I must say I thought the beta was quite fun, but got boring and repetitive quickly, so hopefully I'll enjoy the demo more :D

I assume ye don't use a download manager then
On the subject of download managers I feel compelled to point out Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/). It does exactly what it says on the tin, and it does it brilliantly. You can also "section" downloads too, where you download one file from several mirrors to speed it up considerably. Not to mention it's entirely free, with no advertisements. The interface is clean and pretty, and it has a few unique features, too.

I use firefox which i presume has a sort of downloaded manager with it, i paused the file but to regain my connection i had to disable the network connection and re-enable, this made the download manager say the file was finnished at about 403mb. I'll download that download manager and have a go with that. Thanks

Yeah more than agree it's my fave too - costs nothing and integrates well with Opera, IE and Firefox. :)

Currantly downloading with Free Download Manager, i like the fact you can put other sources, very cool! On 25% so far.

Most d/l managers let you do that - via drag 'n' drop at that

You really have been missing out if you've never used a download manager before :D

this game does freak you out quite a bit, hell a lot! that creepy little girl... and the bit going down the ladder, aiee... clean underwear needed!
technically the game looks amazing, i can;t wait for it to released. middle of october eh... please don;t slip! please don;t slip! we need good games!
out of interest how many ppl here got hold of the beta, and how was it?
afaik, the beta that they released never made it to the "usual channels"

Really looking forward to this game now!

You can "hack" the resolution by editing the .cfg file in...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEARSPDemo

...just change ScreenWidth and ScreenHeight to whatever you want! Have mine running at 1920 x 1200 - gotta love widescreen gaming :D

omg me and my wee borther just crapped out pants toward the end of that demo, the game seems to kick seven shades of sh......out of doom 3

Played the demo today and it looks really good. But has anyone actually looked at the shadow or your character? It's just a plain black siloet of your character, all 1 brightness. And you actually have feet in this game :P And if you cant hack scary games just play it with your headset/speakers off, its the sound that makes it most scary ;)

did you put soft shadows on? and all the other graphical gubbins? the shadows and lighting runnin on my system look absolutely superb.. the projector shadows are extremely accurate, range lighting, soft shadows, the lot are done very well. :D

the bit where you walking through that corridoor and the doors keep shutting reminds me of silent hill for the PS1

I have seen this demo and i cant wait for the full game... The start is excellent, just like a movie and the general mood of the game is nice and scary and i like the Half Life kinda engine they have.

Hope the Multi Player will be good too!

Just played it now and I really enjoyed it. Was looking forward to something perhaps a bit scarier but for a demo it was reasonably immersive and had a few bits that made me shoot at nothing :)

Hopefully the finished product will be even more spooky!

On the comparison with Doom 3 front, I think graphically there isn't much in it. Both games run nicely on my machine, and both games look nice. I find FEAR alot more spooky though, since it's set on Earth, in a realistic setting, rather than on Mars, miles and miles away in an imaginative but ludicrous setting. They're definately alot more inventive with the fear-factors, too, such as timing the "visions" along with your mouse movement and so on. I don't remember any of that in Doom 3, they just relied on the setting and the distant yet close moans in the background. Oh, and spawning bucket loads of monsters behind you all the time.

Also, the whole first-person view is very well done, particuarly how you get out the car, that was neat. And, of course, being able to see your feet is another few points for the immersion.

I just finished playing the demo and it looks like it is going to be a good game, i jumped soo much on that bit where you turn around to get on the ladder and see the girl  SCARY!

Sub
09-08-2005, 02:21
i thnk the "make you jump when you least expect it" factor is FAR more intense in fear. i mean who expects to see something when you get on a ladder, once you've calmed yourself and realised it's gone (still on the ladder) and you jump off to the floor.. and turn BANG your scared ****less again.. having seen the pre-release shizzle videos.. there's set to be ALOT of this kind of crap to really make you jump. not like doom3 where it was door, shoot, ARGH door shoot ARGH ... get's repetative..

i noticed that monolith has re-used the same, action flag music activation technique as in AVP2. and when you first start in teh car, thats the same music as whats in avp2 aswell..
odd..
still if it's got the same kind of immersion as the avp series by them i imagine it'll be extremely well done, the engine itself has alot of potential on a good system, the water and shadowing alone is some of the best i've ever seen. volumetri shadows look extremely nice :D

Amazing. Haven't heard anything from monolith in ages and then they pop up with something as polished as this - really, really well done. The AI is really very impressive, the graphics murder even the most powerful of PCs at 1600x1200 and then... then... there's ACTUALLY good gameplay too. I might even build a new system just to play it :)

Sub
11-08-2005, 14:18
yea the AI is far more advanced, knockin over objects and using them as cover, climbing under it if need be, jumping over rails, diving through windows just to get an edge on ya.. i was like "what the f!? howd he get there!" then realised he'd done a dive through a window into my face and was punching and kicking me lol!
gotta love monolith

Just gone through the demo and I'm really impressed. The enemy AI is brilliant, and combined with the slow mo and particle effects gives some mental fights. In close quarters it gets a lot like that scene from the matrix.
The amount of animations the characters have is impressive too, I love the way they run away firing blindly over their shoulder :)

As for the scary stuff, brilliant, way better executed than doom.

Cant wait for this to come out..

Anyone else had any problems with it?

The keys keep randomly unassigning themselves. Sometimes next the the key for an action appears what looks like a memory address.

Also it seems to just freeze at certain points. Not a particular point in the game. First time it was when i tried to use the first ladder you come to. Next it was when i tried to pick up a frag grenade later on. Also when i crtl+alt+del after this, its using 99% of the cpu and 600mb of ram!

I uninstalled the demo, maybe ill try it again later on if this is a known problem. Dissapointing, but from what i saw, and from what you guys keep saying, it looks pretty good! :D

I'm running a 9800pro. I had it set on 1024*768*32. I left it on the default custom detected settings, but most things seemed to be on medium, and with no fsaa.

I'm thinking, because it happened each time when i pressed the use key. And because of the wierd things happening with the keys reassigning themselves. The use key might have assigned itself to something other than 'f' or something wierd, so when i pressed it, it got all scared and confused and died a terrible terrible death.

Oooo I just pooped my pants!

Just played the demo, DAMN that's some scary chit!

I haven't jumped that far out of my chair playing a game since System Shock 2 when I casually strolled 'round a corner, psi-amp in hand, straight into a red assassin.

I didn't expect any game, ever, to live up to System Shock 2 in my eyes, it's my all time fave game & I've still not got tired of playing it, even after 6 years! But F.E.A.R. is just...whew goddam! The girl at the top of the walkway was scary enough, then you get down the ladder, turn around &....I nearly emptied an entire clip before I pulled myself off the lampshade & realised it was an illusion...MAN this game looks good!
