View Full Version : Poor CS Source performance - any ideas?

Ive only just converted to CS Source. I have a lag problem. My framerates are fine and are always usually quite high, except when I add a load of bots and then it can fall as low as to the high teens! Is this normal? Even when I play online it lags a bit. I get 65 FPS in the stress test with everything turned up and at 1600 x 1200. Is this ok? It just generally feels really unsmmooth in comparison to CSCZ (what Im used to). I have a thread open in SFF forum about my watercooled shuttle if you want to know the specs. Basically I have a pentium 3.4ghz clocked to 3.9ghz and a 6800gt all watercooled and still have performance issues with CSS. Could it be the drivers im using? I am using the detonator drivers - 76.50 I think is the number.
Bit of a shame this really as may have to go back to CSCZ. Ive tried every combo possible to get it to run smooth and just doesnt seem to. What should I be able to run at with a spec like mine and 6800gt? Surely with Antialiasing etc turned off and at 1280 x 1024 it should fly along?

Kind regards for any help.

first you cant expect the same framerates from the source engine.. it's like comparing doom1 to doom3.. just cant do it..
firstly.. tone the game down if you've got EVERYTHING including aa and af on high.. it's gona slow down. also res it down to 1280x960-1024(crt-tft) and see if that helps.
it's a totaly new engine which isn't anywhere near the framerates of the old one. simply because theres more in it.
also when you add bots they use ALOT of CPU time, making your frame rates fall and thus creating lag, anything below 30fps and your ping starts to suffer online.
also if your lagging, you might like to try your rate
i'm on 2Mb and i use
rate 20000
cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 100

and i get ping of 5 usually on most good servers in the UK and around 20~30 on the "baduns"

1Mb id rate 10000 maybe
it's all teaking and finding the right settings for you

another note try typing net_graph 3 and see if you have choke or loss.. this could be client or serverside problem so try different servers.

hope this helps you out. css does have it's moments but once you get to a level which looks good and plays well your looking at around 30~150 fps ranges, simply because fps is really rather map and area dependent. example.. de_dust gets average of 40~50 whereas de_cbble is more around 80~100...
it's just depending on the amount of normal maps, bump maps, specularity, water effects, shaders and many other thigns in the scene.. and the 6X series aren't well known for performing overly well in css from what i've noticed anyway. my 9800 outperforms a friends 68...

good luck and have fun, and please for everyone's sake.. don't play cs:cz.. it's bad for you

Do you live in Redbus or are you using some dodgy rates?

another note try typing net_graph 3 and see if you have choke or loss.. this could be client or serverside problem so try different servers.

As a general rule, choke is client side and loss is server side.

65fps in the "stress" test doesn't sound very high, real world ingame framerates are always lower than this particular benchmark. I use the following commands in my config, which helps things go a bit faster for me:

r_raindensity "0"
fps_max "100"
cl_smooth 0
cl_phys_props_enable 0
fog_enable 0
fog_enable_water_fog 0
r_rainradius 0
r_rainsimulate 0
r_rainsplashpercentage 0
fps_max 100
cl_show_splashes 0
cl_ejectbrass 0

I also use the following rate settings, though these get adjusted depending on what server I'm on and whether I'm getting choke/loss:

rate "25000"
cl_updaterate "100"
cl_cmdrate "100"
cl_smooth "0"
cl_cmdbackup "1"
cl_rate "25000"
cl_interp 0
cl_interpolate 1

There's loads more small tweaks out there, but I no longer play competitively and that was all I could remember when I made myself a new config a while ago.

my 9800 outperforms a friends 68...

My 6600GT marginally outperforms my 9800pro, so I'd expect a 6800 to hammer a 9800 on equal hardware and configs.

good luck and have fun, and please for everyone's sake.. don't play cs:cz.. it's bad for you

Condition Zero is just for people who aren't good enough to play 1.6 and don't have the hardware for source ;)

i found that forcing the nvidia drivers to use High Quality Image settings, that it made css jumpy, fps still fine, but without any noticable visual improvement. have a look in advanced display properties, and check your not forcing any settings, like fsaa and aniso at the drivers.
about ur lag in online games.... join us lucky few that after the last patch... now have dodgy connections with random choke.

no i dont have dodgy rates.. i've stated myn, cl_interp 0 is classed as a minor "hack" if you screw with that it makes it very jumpy in source. and cl_Rate is no longer in use clientside, and my friend with his 6800 IS worse than me on my 9800.. we can't figure out why...
that config you posted takes away ALOT of eye candy.. the best fps boost cvar we found was
mat_bumpmap 0
mat_specular 0
but it looks like 1.6 or cz in your case...

Cheers for the help. I dont have AA or anything in the nvidia control panel turned on. Checked all that. I must apologise for my ignorance, but I have no idea about choke/ping/loss/ etc or anything to do with such rates. I only know very basic console commands like how to get the fps to show etc.

Hehe, funny I know how everyone slates CSCZ over the 1.6 version. But I have only in the last year got into PC gaming despite being older than most on these forums probably! I only have ever played CSCZ as this is the game at the time that was current for Counter Strike and i was advised to buy that as got other halflife stuff with it. I hear all the enthusiasts and even those that are just mild CS fans, rave about how 1.6 is the best and can never been improved on. I must admit that CSS is different in a bad way in comparison to source. Seems just less....I dont know. Cant put my finger on it but think I preferred CZ.

One other thing... can I play CS 1.6 online if I have never bought the game? I have a valid CSCZ key and a valid CSS key as have bought half life 2 as well. Can I play 1.6 online?

Thanks

i think u'll need a valid hl1/hl generations key. or the standalone cs.

except when I add a load of bots and then it can fall as low as to the high teens!

Are you saying this is set up as a non-dedicated server, which you are also connecting to.

Each bot/player uses 30MHz of CPU processing power, plus about 16-32Mb of RAM as well.

If you mates are also connecting to this and you have std ADSL/Cable then your upload is only 256kbps, which means your limited to 2-4 players connecting otherwise it lags like crazy.

So if your running a non-dedicated server and you and your mates are connecting to it, your overloading you machine and Internet connection.

You will need to drop your res and AA/AF settings down and limit the amount of players on the server.

I only say this as you mention adding bots, which only an Admin can do, using the console. If you want any more info on setting up a server, ive had quite abit of experience on this so just shout up ok.

i know quite a few servers that would kick you for that noobeh cl_cmdrate.... lol 30 :(

it's not noobeh.. it works, defaults are 30 20 or 20 30 so it's not like it's any different than normal rates tbh mate
we play proffesionaly and thats a commonly used rate setup for 1mb and 1mb

can't complain with 5 ping and excellent hit reg, only server that would "kick for noobeh" would be the ****ty 33 tick rate ones that haven't pulled their finger's out of their asses and sorted that out.
66 RECOMMENDED by valve ffs.. yet everyone still runs 33
we always use 100 so those rates are fine :D we've never had a complaint yet
