It doesn't go through any phone line as it's a cable internet service not ADSL ;) They also only have limited coverage. Having used their service for three years I would recommend them if you are in a suitable area :)

Most ADSL providers offer the same speeds as they are just reselling a standard BT service. There are a couple who have their own higher speed services, such as Bulldog and Easynet, but it's only available at certain exchanges.

Freedom2surf (my ISP) have been pretty good so far, and they're currently rolling out an 8MB service. Prices are £15/month for a 2GB cap, £20 for 10GB and £25 for unlimited. The only problem I've had was with the installation, and appears to have been down to BT being useless (they had to modify the line and didn't tell anyone once they'd done it) rather than F2S.
http://www.freedom2surf.net/adsl/homeuser.php

Edit: note that it isn't 8MB on all exchanges yet - contact them to see when/if your exchange is enabled. Price is the same for whatever speed you get, and they give you the fastest the exchange will take.

ISP choice? a tough one!

I have been with Force9 for years and have no problems with them.

They are the same company as plusnet.

They offer a lot for the money, including a subnet if you can justify it! Speed depends on what your local exchange can support - ask them, or check Bt's website for info.

For a comparison, checkout ...

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

- that way you can see how most Uk ISPs compair.

If you do go with Force9... a referral would be nice.,.. drop "DJBlack" in the referral box once you have completed the online form!

Have fun

Zen internet :D

Doing maxdsl trials atm.

If ya look on adslguide and net4nowt we are consistently the best ISP according to customers.

also look at http://www.zen.co.uk/zen/awards.asp

the awards we`ve won this year :D

Tech support is top notch, no bandwidth restrictions, No contention over our own network(plus net have 30:1 over their network) very good newsgroups with 8day retention, 8 static IP`s as standard with your account so if ya get banned with one IP from a tracker or game server you have another 5 to play with :D

Not by the time you take off the broadcast address and the network address. That leaves 6 by my maths. Lose one for a ban and you have 5.

Aye as jez has said.

The 8Ip`s offered include the network and broadcast address. This leaves 6 useable addresses. one is assigned to the router leaving 5 that be used in routed Ip and the router one is available nat

ah thanks for your help.. i have looked at the links and im now unsure some look expensive , and are under 3MB :D

im currently thinking about BT Yahoo 2MB, 30 GB Broadband, as it looks good plus when 4MB and 8MB which are apparently out in December some time i should get updated for free unlike my current ISP which you have to pay for every time they upgrade only supplying the FASTER speed for same price to new customers only leaving us old customers paying to upgrade ..

plus there leaving me in the lurch all the time.. i'll be downloading a large file then POOF! its disconnects :p

i have 1MB 30GB Wanadoo ( now 2MB for new customers)

also i looked at blueyonder but have had been told bad things about them from friends.

Thanks All

If the house I had moved to was in a Telewest area, I'd still be using them now. I was with them for about 3 years. Service was crap to begin with but improved leaps and bounds once they got rid of the transparent proxies.

I'm with Force 9 now, who I am happy to recommend to others.

Another happy Zen customer.

No caps, no contention, no clogging, fantastic tech support that doesn't treat power-users like idiots, nor novices like hackers, and a service that stays up all the time. Stupidly low pings. Static IP for nowt. They don't complain when you upload 12GB of files to your office every week. No blocked ports. In a word, utterly perfect and a company that cares a great deal about it's product and it's customers.

Compare and contrast to BT OpenWound who, as well as having the most moronic tech support ever, have connections that behave like a bus full of yo-yo stuntmen doing a tour of the Alps. They're also very quick to enforce their 30GB/month cap, and don't like you running a server of any kind.

And don't even get me started on how much time they leave you on hold for.

Zen is expensive Though ...

£50 for activation
basically £30 a month for 2MB!
to upgrade to a newer speed when it comes out you have to pay £15

plus they charge you for a modem - £28 being the lowest and £195 being the highest

.. PlusNET looks much cheaper but they still end up charging you about £70 overall for activation and a Modem ( Modem is hidden charge)

"pay £58.75 for the activation. For every year you stay we’ll reduce this by £11.75."

"you also choose to take a modem as part of the offer there will be an additional cancellation fee of £25 in the first year and this will reduce by £5 for each year that you stay."

but they only charge £21.99 for 2MB broadband a month

We do block the netbui ports but leaving them open would be daft.

We also have no objection to you running ur own mail server.

Im constantly raping my connection every month dling 60GB plus on my 1/2 meg connection :D

By the Way what is BT OpenWound??

im thinking of geting BT Yahoo! still as the others are quite expensive ...

how much difference can there be between Zen 2MB and BT YAHOO! 2MB ??

19ms Ping instead of 21ms? EG: on the best game in exsistance "Unreal Tournament 2004"

You work for Zen? Well done!

Agreed, NetBUI ports should never see the light of the internet, but I was mainly referring to the commonly used ports for servers and VPN's that alot of consumer DSL people like to block.

We also have no objection to you running ur own mail server.

Another reason I like Zen. They don't treat customers like idiots, and actually allow you some responsibility.

Im constantly raping my connection every month dling 60GB plus on my 1/2 meg connection :D

Well, apart from work stuff, I hardly ever download anything apart from Linux ISO's and music from Bleep. But I imagine my flatmates probably max out the connection 24/7, and I know that we did in the last house I lived in (also Zen).

By the Way what is BT OpenWound??

It's a perjorative term for BT OpenWorld, think they've renamed themselves now.

Zen may be expensive in your world, but you get what you pay for. Look at ADSLGuide and they're continually in the top range. And if you're downloading constantly at 2Mb (it's not MB or mb, it's Mb!) you'll hit your cap in no time at all, turning your cheap 2Mb connection into a very expensive one.

There are prolly other ISP's as good as Zen, but I've yet to find one.

Best thing to do is go to adslguide and look at the forums.

Most of the forums are full of irate customers. The zen forums usually have people discussing beans. whenever anyone comes on to ask for advice there are loads of people there to help. Zen staff actually go to the message boards and answer any issues you have from there.

Plus as of the 1st august there is gonna be support aimed specifically at mac users:D

Well I'll be looking into Zen, once my crappy Wanadoo broadband is gone :D

How long does it take to connect me say if I got Zen on a line that aleready had Broadband?

And then if I had it and moved to somewhere else?

Soz for questions - but I need to switch ISP's too - and this may be of some use to the chap who started the thread too :p

Migrations take about 5 working days(standard BT wholesale times) details of migrations can be found here http://www.zenbroadband.co.uk/ADSL.aspx?page=188

Moving the adsl line to a new house is free. details can be found here at http://www.zenbroadband.co.uk/ADSL.aspx?page=380

Also with zen its a 1 month contract so you can leave anytime you like.

Monkeygoesmeow
22-07-2005, 20:10
yup it is useful to the chap who started this also (me) :p

yeah i looked at zen btw: migration is free - but one question please when the new speeds come out do they charge to upgrade like wanadoo have done to me twice (costing £35) thanks ...

Thanks

Dave

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

OOPS!! just seen they charge £15 to upgrade and £50 to activate getting bit pricey :p (hopefully they dont charge for modem on top of this)

Every ISp has to pay BT for a new line to be activated some ISP`s work this into their monthly charge but tie you into a year long contract. with zen you can leave after a month.

We dont supply any hardware for the activation price but we do sell hardware which can be found here at http://zenadsl.co.uk/ADSL.aspx?page=168

If you buy the hardware from us we can offer support on the installation and setting up of it. If you didnt buy the hardware from us but it is a model we sell then we will be able to offer support as well but if things are wrong with the hardware then cant help there.

IF you have hardware that we dont sell we will attempt to help you set it up and will try our best to get you up and running but cant offer full support for every type of router.

ah yeah but i quote in my original question i want a server £30 MAX a month and i dont want any hidden charges also ...

and Zen are offering there 2Mb for £35 a month by the time you add VAT (as underneath in small writing they say price exluding VAT)

on adsl guide i put in BT, Wanadoo and Zen and BT came out 2nd Best and its within my limit.

£5 extra a month is like £60 a year plus when when you add the £50 activation its £110 extra a year compared to BT plus when they upgrade to a faster speed ( EG: 4MB at end of the year) you will have to pay £15 which BT does free

so its like a extra £125 i bet they are **MUCH** better then BT but for a extra £125 when your trying to afford a holiday and a new pc , plus a car its just too much :p

and on top of that you have to pay for a modem which BT sends FREE ( although its a crappy one)

But thanks all the same

No probs mate.

Zen is by no means the cheapest ISp but If you look at the stats for BTyahoo they have bandwidth restrictions on their server which we dont.

If your not going to be hammering the connection then bandwidth limits shouldnt matter.

with Zen you can hammer the connection as much as you like and we wont ask you to stop :D

23-07-2005, 20:21
yeah well ive survived my 30Gb limit for 5 years on my other ISP so i think i will still be ok with a 30Gb ;)

thats unless its finally possible that downloads download at atleast a stable 220kbps but i dont think that will happen :D ( for a while..)

Thanks

Dave

I`m on 512 and download over 50 G/b a month.

Stable speeds are possible I know of a number of people on 2Mb who are downloading constantly at over 200 Kbps using newsgroups :D
