Hi

My current PC is a Socket A xp2400, with 512Mb ram and a Ge Force 4.

I want to upgrade it to a 3000 64 venice, 1GB Ram and a 6600GT.

MY psu does not have PCi express power cables so will a normal molex splitter work, and will all the other stuff like the HHD still work and have xp and that still on it?

Thanks

Realistically speaking, it probably makes sense to keep the case, hard drive(s) and DVD writer(s) and replace everything else. The new CPU will require a new motherboard and (most likely) memory. The new motherboard will then put a requirement on PSU and graphics card.

You might then want to think about selling your existing PC as a whole, rather than breaking it up and trying to get rid of the individual parts. It's up to you how much you think it's worth splitting it up to keep the case and what not.

Yea, I said I was going to get a new mobo, Ram, cpu and gfx. The cd drive and HDD are all in full working order so I may as well keep them.

My main query was whether a 2 yr old psu would suffice. And if the HDD will still have everything on it?

Thanks

Might help if you tell us what PSU it is, then ;)

The HDD will still have all it's contents if you unplug it from your old PC and plug it into a new one, but you may find Windows XP isn't particularly happy about having all it's underlying hardware changed (in particular, motherboard swaps often throw it a bit of a curve ball).

Don't get me wrong; it'll boot up and work, but myself I'd look to doing a fresh re-install of the operating system after a major upgrade like the one you're planning.

I have recently done a mb change over and found a repair install to work fine and I didnt loose all my junk (maybe a fresh install is a good idea after all :D ) I supose its personal opinion really.

ur less likely to get any problems or errors if u do a fresh install so its recommended that u do.

I would replace any |PSU that old if you're getting PCI-E and nforce 4. Nforce 4 specs on sites like DFI require 480w PSU - native 24pin only

I would get a new PSU to avoid issues :D
