Anyone like the idea of buying fans which control their rpm according to temp. ? I know Papst make them. Don't know how much they cost. What do you think Graeme ?

Had a look around and this place - http://uk1.farnell.com/Search/level_5.jhtml?PRODID=46975&SKUID=44960 sells thermal fan controllers, they look very cool. Note the dicounts for buying in bulk
;)

I've just bought one - It'll be a while before I get it set up though. Big advantage is that you can run 15W of fans from them so I'll have both case and cpu fans on the same circuit. Cheaper that Variofans.

What about fans from mechatronics (http://www.mechatronics.com/)? They come with Thermistor Control, so will change rpm depending on speed. Min rpm at 25oC and max rpm at 35oC, where as the Papst have 20-40oC or 35-55oC. But also come in Tachometer Output Signal, Locked Rotor Output Signal models. For example they do the following 80mm case fans:

Mechatronics F8025M - 2100rpm, 34.0CFM, 26dB-A
Mechatronics F8025H - 2400rpm, 39.0CFM, 29dB-A
Mechatronics F8025E - 2800rpm, 46.0CFM, 32.0dB-A
Mechatronics F8025X - 3200rpm, 51.0CFM, 35.0dB-A
Mechatronics F8025H-H - 3400rpm, 40.0CFM, 32.0dB-A
Mechatronics F8025E-H - 3600rpm, 46.0CFM, 35.0dB-A
Mechatronics F8025X-H - 4200rpm, 53.0CFM, 39.0dB-A

The -H models have a slightly higher static pressure than the other ones, thus perform better when used on heatsinks where air resistance is higher, but are of course are louder. Where as the other ones would be fine for case cooling. Having the -H ones with the Thermistor control might be a nice way to deal with the extra noise, yet have that extra static pressure performance when needed.
