I think for Brits as a whole it's a good thing. I'm not an Athletics fan, but it's good for morale I guess. :)

Financially, though, the Olympics can be a kiss of death. Not to be grumbling yet though, plenty of time for us to save up. :D

Maybe Wembley will be finished by then... :p

the money the government have spent so far and will spend up to 2012 would staff hospitals for far longer than the 'games' will last. all for the sake of a few people running round a track or chucking spears, swimming or rowing a boat...

nahh, give the olympics to the french, let them waste the money..

I'll be 24 . ahh!

Surely the Olympics brings in revenue for the country. It must bring a profit with it??

Atleast we beat the french.

****ing Jacques Chirac or however you spell it

I'll be about 20 (yes, I'm quite young), but it's still pretty exciting. And I don't get excited much. We were watching it at lunchime (early lunch because of fair at school, and so we had lunches in classrooms), and within minutes, our teacher had printed off sheets for us to sign up to apply to be helpers in the games.

Sydney made quite a big profit from the Olympics. Athens and Atlanta made big losses (although in the case of Athens this is at least partly explained by the need to fix their transport infrastructure - long overdue).

I'll be 27 when it comes around so *touch wood* i'll be working in/around London so might be able to blag some hospitality tickets!
Its a damn good thing we beat the French, but thats just down to the rivalry and down-right hatred!

on a BIG downer though - did anyone else see that news report with the woman whos house is going to have to be demolished to make way for the all the arenas/centres!? she's lived there for 30 years and now has to leave it all behind to make way for a swimming pool or something!

i can't see how it will make a profit in 2 weeks of games when the cost is gonna be about 2.5 BILLION pounds to the country. nope, stick the olympics where the sun dont shine and spend the money on the schools or the nhs. in fact, 2.5 billion would give the nurses a damn good pay rise every year for the next 5 years.

Only £625M is going to be raised by taxation. And all of that is going to come from Londoners - to the tune of £20 a year on the council tax. London businesses will easily recoup that money during the games. In addition, as Ken Livingstone rightly said today, East London is the poorest part of the UK and will benefit greatly from this.

The remaining £2 billion will come from TV and sponsorship (about 0.7 billion) and from an Olympic lottery they're going to start running. So it'll mainly be funded by the greed of the country as a whole. If people really wanted to sort the NHS out they could just start giving it the money they waste on the lottery.

It's incredibly naive to think that any of money that will be spent on the Olympics was just sitting around in the treasury and could have been spent on the NHS. It simply doesn't work like that. You could stick NHS collection boxes next to the lottery booth and see how much you get ...

Almost 99% of the comments I've read so far about the UK getting the 2012 olympics has been negative... primarily for financial reasons... but PDF27 hit the nail on the head IMO, when he said...

"Sydney made quite a big profit from the Olympics".

If figures are to be believed... the olympics brought in revenues to the tune of some £30bn for Sydney!? That's £30bn... not millions

Even if the figure of £2.5bn being touted as our cost to stage them is just half of what it eventually costs us... I reckon £25bn [give or take a few bn] would make hosting the 2012 olympics very worthwhile to our economy

I personally think it's great news that we won the bid

East London is the poorest part of the UK

You sure? I thought that was hull...

London don't need anymore money, far to many rich peeps down there, it's most likely just going to enhance the north south divide even more - give the money to Hull! w00t for Hull!

I'd agree with Slamdog, Government money that could be spent elsewhere.
