Hi i was wondering if anyone could help me with my computer problem. I have recently reformatted my computer because of a virus. I then went to use a boot disk but all I got was Floppy disk(s) Fail(C0) error and it hadn't even read the drive. Can anyone help me. I even bot a new floppy drive but that didn't work.

does this happen at the very inital post screen (with the energy star logo) ?

If so , check and double check the connections - pin 1 is the red stripe on the ribbon cable, and the pin1 should be marked with an arrow on your motherboard and floppy drive. are u also making sure that the twist in the floppy drive cable is in the `chain`?

The twist must be in between the motherboard and drive.

Graeme's suggestion is the most probable but:

1) As Graham says, check that the floppy drive cable is not bust, reversed, is pushed in properly, and that the power cable is not loose (since you say nothing happens to it at all, no lights etc the latter could be it)

2) Sure this isn't some obscure BIOS setting (such as that it is trying to access B: instead of A: or vice versa) ??? Also, in 'BIOS chipset features setup menu' or similar, is your Onboard FDC Controller enabled?

3) Try disabling floopy seek in the BIOS??

4) You could update the BIOS / load the BIOS defaults / reset the BIOS using jumper on motherboard/removing battery. On this subject, are you sure your BIOS battery is fine? how old is it?

5) Bit of a longshot, but Techadvice.com advises that "the one thing to try if you are using older Sound Blaster sound cards (or similar ISA based cards) is to remove this card and see if it fixes the problem. Afterward you can add the card back in" More broadly, could be some kind of conflict, I guess.

Come on, SOMETHING above must work!!!

Look at the light on the drive, if it comes on and stays on you have got your cables round the wrong way, similarly if the light doesn't doesn't come on.

Not that simple, mate - if the light doesn;t come on at all, could be that the FDD isn't getting any power from the mobo, or a number of things I listed above. but if it comes on and stays on then, yes, as Graeme suggested, it probably is a reversed data cable.

Seems unlikely he would have inadvertently reversed the cable when he states all he did was reformat his HDD - last time I checked that didn't involve opening up my boxen! :-)

If I'm right with any of the above, somebody better rate my ass 5 stars - can't live with being unrated much longer :-(

Rated.

Hmm it is usually reasonably tricky to knock out a FDD without doing anything.

It is unlikely to be BIOS because it was working before the HDD went AWOL and as he said he just formatted the HDD and that wouldn't touch the BIOS.

Might have knocked the case and knocked the FDD power connector out, which is all too easy!

Jonathan Oakes: any luck with any of the above?

JStormont: Cheers for the rating! woohoo!

None of the above worked. However I took my motherboard battery out and then put it back in. The floppy drive worked but I lost AGP support. I then managed to turn AGP support on without visual. Then the floppy drive stopped working again.

You didn't have the CIH virus by any chance did you?

That *is* one of the things I suggested!!!

Sounds like a conflict to me - perhaps a bizarre IRQ war going on on your mobo - you tried removing eery card but video card from mobo and rebooting, then (if it works) adding cards in one at a time? Apologies if this is really obvious and you've already tried it.

J Stormont has a point - I do remember hearing of a virus that does something similar to this - can't remember exactly how or what it does or how to get around it tho.

BTW, if you did all of the above, how did you verify your BIOS battery was still fine?!? You got some kind of meter??

you actually downloaded a *different* BIOS versoin from your mobo manufacturer's website and flashed it?

Yes I did get the CIH virus thats why i needed to reformat because had no virus software.

The CIH virus does have a habit of screwing up your BIOS. Try flashing your BIOS like DA said, that might help (and the battery thing).

If nothing else works then it is new motherboard time. CIH is one of the most deadly viruses you can have on your PC as it overwrites your BIOS with blank information. However there were quite a few versions of it, so goodness only knows what it is capable of.
