View Full Version : got those modem blues
got a cheapy modem in at the moment but my pings crap. i know its not the isp an everything tweaked to f*ck. any recomendations on a good modem? if you guys could tell me what kind of pings you all get in cs that wouldbe really helpful, and what modem you use.
adsl users need not apply [youll only make me want to kill you]

Um .. Well I'm on cable these days, but again - U.S. Robotics External are probably the best in the biz, mine got coke pored in it and we had to use the PCI card modem. The difference was unbelievable, even though the external was only 33.6 (We got a software upgrade to 56 :D )
U.S. Robotics all the way. Or just get cable.
gah 56k ......you get bt's adsl for around 20 quid a month soon so there no excuse ......
except for not living in an ADSL enabled area, like almost 30% of the population(says BT!!) which realisticly is more like the inverse of that!
listen village boy......its not my fault bt dont care for the sheep shagging quota out there......... :p

here's a place to go to if you want adsl:
BroadBand Scotland (http://www.broadbandscotland.net)
best out there....
tip: if you have more than 1 line register them all seperately. ;)

well ive got a cheap & nasty Trust ESP-2 56k'er as recommended by The Poodle, and get pings of about 250 - 300 on freezerve anytime at peak times, but i'm 8-10km from exchange and the line is crappy so i get 48.8kbit/sec (4.5k/sec in reality) when dling. perfectly playable, just slow :D

I've always found that a internal modem works best. Although my last one kicked the bucket and I'm now using a 'Diamond SupraExpress 56e Pro'. It's okay but it experiences more lag. Always look for Hardware modems...if your cheapy modem is a software one...then thats your reason. ;). I've just ordered another Diamond SupraExpress modem but it's an internal one...and I should get it pretty soon. This will test my theory on whether internal is better than external.
I'm basing my analysis on data throughput. I read somewhere that a lot of bottlenecks come from the fact that most motherboard
serial ports are slow (Bad terminology used here) thus some data transferred is not as good.
Anyway, in a day or so...we'll see...unless someone replies to this message and tells me to stop talking BS.
just got an elsa and the pings better, but its more to do with the line me think
I get pings of around 180 to blueyonder serverswith my Lucent win modem and thats a crappy modem
cheers everyone by the way. i think i might try a few of the local rate dialups, see what theyre all like before i try diff. isps

I'm using Freeserve at the moment, they're rates are cheap (compared to everyone else!)
And they don't hassle you, unlike BT! (oops! I said a bad word! :D )
Im with BT and i have never had one single problem with them
Im with BT on adsl i also havnt had any problems with them although every so often you get disconnected say after 12 ish hrs.It doesnt always happen ,they say the green frog or stingray (usb modem) is to fault.Anyway im moving house to a non adsl village so i will be back to 56k again boo.
