Ive got an abit ai7 motherboard - but currently having problems tryign to find a suitable heatsink for the cpu.

its a socket 478 board and seems to be of a weird design. The cpu socket is rotated 45degrees from normal and the hsf bracket is also rotated 90 degrees from normal - see attached picture.

because of this - it seems awkward finding a hsf that covers all the cpu while giving decent airflow and fitting inside my case - which is a coolermaster wavemaster.
Most recent one i tried was a thermaltake silent tower.
It managed to cover all the cpu - however had the following porblems.
- because of the hsf mount on the board being different direction - the fan on the hsf taking warm air from gfx card and passign it over the heat sink then onto the base of the psu - instead of taking it from above ram and shooting it out the back of the case.
- prob 2 was that the bracket that came with the hsf was stopped by capacitors on the mobo - not a major problem though as it can be made to fit
- prob 3 - the hsf is too tall for the wavemster case - so would have to attached hsf to mobo after motherboard tray has been slid into case - not easy tightening small nuts in such a small space.

So really looking for suggestions of heatsinks that would fit my requirements and keep cpu cool - quiet would be preferable. Or would like to hear from other AI7 owners about what they are using.

The CPU i have is a 3.0GHz Prescot

Thanks

I use a Swiftech MCX478-V in both my 478 motherboards, the footprint of the HS is inside the mounting brackets and it uses the standard brackets to mount to. You will need a fan and they are £££ but looking at your picture I can't see why it won't fit.

Hey Ling,
do you remember the big blue thing I have on my CPU. The Zalman one with a blue airduct. If you can find one and it will fit then you can easily direct the air out the back of your case with it.

My pc will be being sold off soon..... ;)

might be a bit more expensive but have you thought of water cooling ? ive got the abit AI7 and a cheapo coolriver water cooling kit, 3 gig prescott @ 4gig 48 degrees idle, 60ish on load! fits perfectly too.

I've always been a fan of the thermalright range. Bit of cutting here and there  , and they'll fit anything...
