View Full Version : New CPU Heatsink?
I'm currantly running my AMD 3500+ with the stock heatsink and fan and getting idle temps of arond 38 - 41 degrees, this didnt seem to bad to me but after a few hours of gaming my max temp was 59degrees! Am I the only person to get such a bad temperature? Tomorrow i'll hopefully order the Akasa AK913 as it did best on the Custom PC magazine, any1 else have this heatsink? I presume this will sort my problems?
Thanks

hmmmm, theres deffinatly something up with my heatsink, might crack the old girl open and have a look..
something strange is most deffinatly going on. Opened up the case and took of my heatsink to have a look at the CPU. It was covered in grey/silver stuff, some of it in a powder form. Is this normal?!?! And for an expiriment i decieded to see how cold i could actualy get my temps and this is a bit strange too. Both my windows wide open, all of my fans on full, side pannel of case. CPU idle at 38degrees, system at 35degrees and chipset at 37 degrees, strange no?
What have I dont wrong? Help much appreciated!
Heres a pic of the dust/powder stuff

Did you build the system ? the only idea i have is that its dried out thermal interface stuff.which happens when the heatsink isnt on properly i think.

i did build the system myself, i put it all together myself except one part, lol, the heatsink, my friend did that while i got a drink. It seemed as though it was attached properly when i took it off, maybe it wasnt. I'm ording a new one tomorrow. If we assume that the thermal interface has dried out, what happens when i put on a new heatsink, do i just brush the old stuff off? It says it has AK-450 thermal compound pre-applied so i guess i dont need to put anything else on??
Thanks for your help

just get off as much as possible cos i think it would be pointless using the stuff to get it off as its powder not like gel.

buy some decent thermal paste (i'm sure the guys on here will be able to tell you what they feel performs best) then remove the old paste and apply the new stuff and put the stock heatsink back on then with any luck your temps will have gone down. Or you could buy the...

to get your temps down even more :)

should have ordered some Akasa tim cleaner with that. itll of got that paste of the chip in seconds,
i haven't got any personal experience of the cooler but custompc said it was easy to install, hopefully i should be ordering one soon aswell though :)
just wondering what mouse did you order - a gaming one?
will it be good enough just to brush off that old paste? And as for the mouse, just got a cheapy gaming mouse, the lowest priced one i could find with 800dpi. It was the Xpro B82 5 Button Optical mouse Blue for a tenner, blue to go with my case :)
Having that new mouse means i can have my wireless keyboard and mouse infront on my TV and my wired stuff at the desk.

see if you local chemist has small quantities of isopropyl, uch better than the akasa tim cleaner etc, i had to pay £5.50 for like 500ml, which is way more than enough.
If you are lucky your chemist may have it in stock, and in smaller bottles, however i had to ring around the area to find a chemist that could order some in!!!
You needto get some decent cleaning stuff to make sure the heatsink is properly cleaned etc, i.e. not to affect the heat transfer. However tbh, the difference in heat of not cleaning it properly and cleaning it properly will be 2 degrees at most. Its totally up to you!

What i would do, is not bother, just don't use your PC until your new cooler comes and just bung that on! Cleaning the heatspreader, i would use a lint free cloth, i always use kitchen towel and those freezer bags to clean my heatsink / cpu!
After reinstalling my HSF my idle temps have dropped to around 39degrees which is alot better. I'll continue using my PC, its only till tomorrow, and i'll just us esome kitchen towel to wipe off as much as i can then just stick on the new heatsink, will this do the job?
Thanks for u help.

installed my Akasa 913 today and all is good. My load temp is around 45, same as my old idle temp and thats on the lowest speed.
